city of new orleans and its suburbs leaving at least one person dead. last night's tornado was seen touching down near chalmette. it caused damage in many areas battered by hurricane katrina in 2005. cars were flipped over, homes were leveled, and roofs blew apart. in saint bernard parish, one woman said her family took cover when they heard the twister coming. >> we heard it coming down the street. it was a lot of the whistling. we had enough time to get in the bathroom. and it shook the whole house, and the whole house is pretty messed up and our cars. but we're okay. we didn't get hurt. >> residents also reported a strong smell of natural gas in the neighborhood where debris clings to electrical wires, and at least one church was destroyed. new orleans' mayor says there are no reports of casualties or serious damage. thousands in the city have no power. president biden is headed to europe today for what could be his biggest overseas trip since taking office last year.

he's expected to shore up support with nato allies as russia continues its brutal assault on ukraine. bradley blackburn has a preview from new york. >> reporter: good morning. this is an historic moment with the president touching down in europe as the continent faces its worst crisis since world war ii. president biden will make several stops over the next few days including to poland, now sheltering millions of refugees. the president's trip starts with a focus on nato allies and the real threat from russia. president biden leaves for brussels this morning on his way to meet with nato and european leaders to discuss the war in ukraine. >> he will have the opportunity to coordinate on the next phase of military assistance to ukraine. he will join our partners in imposing further sanctions on russia. >> reporter: national security adviser jake sullivan says the president will announce joint actions to reduce europe's dependence on russian gas. despite a continued russian bombardment, pentagon spokesman john kirby says ukrainian forces

are now attempting to take back occupied territories. >> we have seen indications that the ukrainians are going a bit more on the offense now. >> reporter: ukraine's military says it recaptured the strategically important town of makariv and are fighting to get back the cities of izyum and kherson. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy says step by step, peace negotiations are moving forward, though in an interview with cnn, kremlin spokesman dmitry peskov refused to rule out the possibility of nuclear attacks. >> putin intends to make the world listen to and understand our concerns. >> reporter: moscow is cracking down on dissidents at home. yesterday, russia's prominent opposition leader alexei navalny was sentenced to nine years in prison. and ukrainian leaders are now accusing russia of targeting a humanitarian convoy headed to mariupol.

they say 15 rescue workers and drivers were seized while trying to bring food and supplies into the city where 100,000 civilians have been bombarded for a month. anne-marie? >> just heartbreaking, bradley. thank you very much. white house press secretary jen psaki will not be traveling to europe with president biden because she tested positive for covid. on twitter, she said she has mild symptoms and is vaccinated. she had two socially distanced meetings with mr. biden on monday, but under federal guidelines he is not considered a close contact. she said the president tested negative yesterday. meantime, hillary clinton also tested positive for the coronavirus. the former secretary of state and first lady who is vaccinated and boosted wrote on social media that she's experiencing mild symptoms. she says her husband, former president bill clinton, tested negative and is quarantining until their household is fully cleared. supreme court nominee ketanji brown jackson will face a second round of questions

today as part of her confirmation hearings. she defended her record yesterday pushing back against gop claims that she was soft on crime during her time on the federal bench. as skyler henry reports, she also expressed her views on some of the nation's most divisive issues. >> reporter: judge ketanji brown jackson defended her record on day two of her supreme court confirmation hearings. >> my judicial philosophy is to rule impartially and to rule consistent with the limitations on my authority as a judge. >> reporter: the senate judiciary committee's questions focused largely on her nine-year tenure on the federal bench. >> you wouldn't say that you're an activist judge? >> i would not say that. >> reporter: republicans have tried to paint jackson as soft on crime. the committee's democratic chair, dick durbin, opened the hearing and gave jackson the chance to respond to their expected lines of attack, that as a judge she's been lenient in sentencing child pornography offenders.

>> as a mother and a judge who has had to deal with these cases, i was thinking that nothing could be further from the truth. >> reporter: that was a preview of one of the more intense exchanges with senator ted cruz. >> do you believe the voice of the children is heard? >> yes, senator, i do. >> could you explain how? >> your chart does not include all of the factors that congress has told judges to consider. >> reporter: on tuesday judge jackson expressed broad support for americans' first and second amendment rights. she also weighed in on the issue of abortion. >> roe and casey are the settled law of the supreme court concerning the right to terminate a woman's pregnancy. >> reporter: on wednesday, jackson will undergo another round of questioning before her confirmation hearing wraps up the next day. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. there are breaking developments from the world of sports.

overnight the top female tennis player announced her retirement. >> it's hard to say, but i'm so happy and so ready, and i know at the moment in my heart for me as a person this is right. >> ashleigh barty posted the emotional announcement on instagram last night. the 25-year-old from australia said that she doesn't have the physical and emotional drive any more to compete. she wants to pursue other dreams instead. less than two months ago, she won the australian open. it was her third grand slam singles title. barty has held the number-one ranking for 114 consecutive weeks. she's expected to hold a formal press conference today. coming up, birthday party scare. a security camera shows the dramatic moments after a bounce house narrowly misses injuring a child after being ripped from the ground by strong winds. and fortune giveaway. billionaire mckenzie scott makes hr largest public donation yet.

matching your job description. visit indeed.com/hire security video captured scary moments in north carolina after a gust of wind blew away a bounce house in a family's back yard on saturday. a boy is seen running. he said the bounce house grazed his head and his back, but he was not injured. no one else was hurt. the mother shared the video on facebook saying that if you get a bounce house, watch out for bad winds. there was a tiger attack in florida, and people in colorado marked the anniversary of a supermarket shooting. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the daily camera" reports residents and community leaders in boulder, colorado, gathered yesterday to remember the victims of the deadly shooting rampage at king supers one year ago. the police chief recognized officer eric tally who was among the ten killed but whose presence at the scene most likely prevented the horrific

situation from becoming worse. >> officer eric tally made the ultimate sacrifice. there is no doubt that eric's selfless bravery performed in the line of duty saved dozens of lives. >> a bell rang ten times to honor those who died. the "naples daily news" says a worker was mauled by a tiger in the animal sanctuary of an air boat attraction in the florida everglades. authorities say that a caretaker was feeding the tiger in its enclosure yesterday when another worker who was not authorized to be with the tiger entered the enclosure. the tiger attacked the 50-year-old worker and caused injuries to both of his arms. he was hospitalized. the tiger was not injured. and "the new york times" reports philanthropist mackenzie scott donated $436 million to habitat for humanity international. this includes 84 of its u.s. affiliates. it is the largest publicly disclosed donation scott has

for single tax filers, another is a quarterly rebate up to $360 taken from taxes paid by the oil and gas companies. a third includes a rebate program based on the oil and gas companies' yearly profits. americans are expected to spend an extra $2,000 this year because of high gas prices. workers at a seattle starbucks unanimously voted to unionize yesterday making it the first location in the company's hometown to do so. the seattle location joined six other company-owned starbucks across the country that have voted to unionize under workers united. more than 100 other locations have filed to hold union elections. it comes as starbucks' former ceo howard schultz, who has a history of being anti-union, gears up to return to the helm of the coffee joint next month. and just in time for easter, you can now personalize your own peeps. the company's website is letting consumers customize their chicks to their liking. you get to pick the marshmallow

our top stories this morning -- at least one person was killed when a tornado cut through new orleans and the surrounding area. 8,000 customers in the city have no power. last night's tornado damaged regions that were hit by hurricane katrina 17 years ago. and president biden is heading to belgium today for a meeting with nato and european leaders to talk about the crisis in ukraine. efforts to punish russia will be a priority alongside assisting the humanitarian disaster unfolding in ukraine. national security adviser jake sullivan says that the president will announce joint actions to reduce europe's dependence on russian gas. and investigators in nevada

are searching for an 18-year-old woman they believe was abducted while she was waiting for a ride to work. danya bacchus has the details. >> reporter: as the search continues for 18-year-old naomi irion, her mother makes a desperate plea. >> please save my daughter and bring her home. >> reporter: investigators in nevada say she was last seen on the morning of march 12th. she was waiting inside her car in a walmart parking lot in fernley for a shuttle to take her to work when the man seen in this surveillance video walked up, got in with her, and drove away. >> the suspect approaches the vehicle, at 05: 25 hours it leaves the walmart parking lot with the suspect driving the vehicle. >> reporter: police say naomi was on social media right before she disappeared. her phone went dark. her car was found a few days later. they say her disappearance is criminal. >> we're working around the clock. our agency, the fbi, this has
