we have highlights from the latest from the round of march madness. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with president biden's trip to europe to sten suorukin today he will travel to land border where he will reportedly meet with refugees. mr. biden huddled with world leaders yesterday in brussels where they announced new sanctions against russia. he said russia should be kicked out of the g20 to further isolate the kremlin from the global economy. his call to action comes as russian forces fired two missiles overnight at a ukrainian military unit at the fourth largest city in ukraine. the strikes killed an unknown number of people and destroyed buildings in the area. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president biden will be in poland today, a city about an hour's drive from the ukrainian border. that's where u.s. troops are now based, and it's also a key location for resupplying ukraine's military with weapons

and other equipment as they continue to counter russia. the fighting in ukraine has entered a second month, and without any ending in sight the u.s. and its european allies coinue to look for ways to cut off funding to russia's war machine. president biden is in europe holding a series of emergency summits with other leaders. the president says unity is the key to defeating russian leader vladimir putin. >> the single most important thing that we have to do in the eporteterday i anctions invials tied to the kremlin. >> putin is getting exactly the opposite what he intended of to as a consequence of going into ukraine. >> reporter: mr. biden also announced new humanitarian aid for ukraine and said the u.s. would admit 100,000 refugees who fled the violence. in a video released this morning, ukrainian president

volodymyr zelenskyy thanked the international community for its support over the past month. zelenskyy said that every day his country holds out against russia brings it a day closer to achieving peace. and we also expect president biden to announce a plan to ship more liquefied natural gas to europe hoping to reduce their dependence on russian energy sources. about 40% of europe's supply currently comes from russia. >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you very much. the u.n. security council could hold a meeting today after north korea fired its largest ever intercontinental ballistic missile. north korean state media released images of yesterday's launch. some experts believe that the weapon is capable of hitting the east coast here in the u.s. the leader kim jong-un said that he's preparing for a long-standing confrontation with th

u.n. security council resolutions. and now to an exclusive investigation by cbs news and "the washington post." newly uncovered text messages reveal that the wife of a supreme court justice allegedly pushed to overturn the 2020 presidential election. here's chief ection and campaign correspondent robert costa. >> reporter: the stunning texts detail an extraordinary relationship between ginni thomas and then-white house chief of staff mark meadows just after then-president trump started his fight to overturn the 2020 election results. >> this is a major fraud in our nation. we want the law to be used in a proper manner. so we'll be going to the u.s. supreme court -- >> reporter: the texts are among more than 2,000 messages meadows provided to the january 6 committee. the first message from thomas came the day before joe biden was declared the winner of the 2020 presidential election. "do not concede," she wrote. "it takes time for the army who is gathering for his back."

thomas urged meadows to help the president stand firm. the majority knows biden and the left is attempting the greatest heist of our history. the messages don't directly reference justice thomas or the supreme court but show how ginni thomas sought to guide the president's strategy to overturn the election, urging meadows to make trump's controversial attorney, sidney powell, the lead and the face. on november 24th, meadows wrote, quote, this is a fight of good versus evil. thomas replied, "thank you. needed that. this plus a conversation with my best friend just now." it is unclear who ginni thomas was referring to. supreme court justice clarence thomas often refers to his wife this way -- >> i love being here with my bride, virginia, who's a gift from god and my totally best friend in the whole world. >> reporter: ginni thomas recently acknowledged she had attended president trump's rally at the ellipse prior to the attack but says she left before

mr. trump addressed the crowd. ginni thomas has publicly denied any conflict of interest between her activism and her husband's work. in the one case heard by the court tied to the january 6 insutiotedo release trump white house records to the committee. there was only one dissent -- justice clarence thomas. >> that was robert costa reporting. mark meadows had no comment, and his attorney confirmed the content of the text messages. ginni thomas did not respond to multiple requests for comment. and just thomas, who remains in the hospital, also did not respond. ahead on "cbs mornings," we're going to talk with robert costa and bob woodward about the exclusive investigation. confirmation hearings have wrapped up for supreme court nominee ketanji brown jackson. republicans and democrats called expert witnesses yesterday to testify about jackson's potential spot on the nation's highest court. it follows several days of contentious hearings about jackson's record on the bench.

if confirmed she would become the first black woman to serve on the supreme court. and turning now to march madness where the sweet 16 wasn't so sweet for two number-one seeds. the top tournament seed, gonzaga, fell to arkansas last night 74-68. the bulldogs trailed at halftime for just the fifth time this season and shot 37% from the field. number-one arizona wildcats also lost yesterday 72-60 to houston. the cougars scored the first basket of the game and never trailed. they advance to the elite eight to play villanova who beat michigan yesterday. >> how about this -- wow! >> big time! >> whoa! >> and duke pulled away from texas tech in the final minutes for a trip to the elite eight. final score 78-74. the blue devils will play arkansas next. this is the final run for blue devils coach mike krzyzewski who will retire after the tournament. coming up, stadium fire.

"the washington post" reports former president trump has sued hillary clinton and others over the 2016 election he won. in the lawsuit trump alleges clinton and the democratic national party and other individuals conspired to link his campaign to russia. he claims that he spent more than $24 million defending himself against the accusations, and he's seeking damages three times that amount in the lawsuit. a spokesman for clinton called the lawsuit, quote, nonsense. the "chica million to help people pay for gas. yesterday willie wilson held his second gas giveaway in the last week at 48 stations throughout cook county. some drivers waited more than an hour as hundreds of people pumped gas and managed lines. >> when people are poor, ain't got the resource, the middle class, it hurts your pockets. >> he did a good thing. this is a blessing right here because it helps a lot of people out.

in place out here, we're going to get in the swing of things. >> well, that's a clip from the oscar-nominated movie "power of the dog." every time the movie is mentioned on sunday at the academy awards, the pet insurance group pawp will donate $10,000 to animal rescues. a spokesman said the initiative will help pups in need even though the movie has nothing to do with dogs. it's up for 12 academy awards, though, including best picture and best director. on the cbs "money watch," uber announced an unlikely partnership, and some tiger woods golf history is up for auction. naomi ruchim is in new york with those stories and more. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. stock futures are pointing to a fat open after a rebound on wall street. yesterday's labor department report showed weekly jobless claims at the lowest level in more than 52 years. today investors will get a new reading on consumer sentiment for march.

thursday the dow jumped 349 points. the nasdaq added 269, and the s&p 500 rose 63. longtime rivals uber and new york city taxi companies have called a truce, and they're partnering up. uber will start letting customers book taxi rides on its app. the move is designed to help uber deal with long waits caused by driver shortages, wild giving taxis access to a whole new pool of customers. the service is supposed to start this spring. uber's stocks jumped 4% after news of the deal broke. southwest airlines is making it easier to use those travel credits before they expire. the airline unveiled its new wanna get away plus fare category yesterday. it will allow passengers to transfer flight credits to someone else for a price, of course. southwest says the new fare will cost more than their cheapest

tickets. it's calling the price increase modest, but we won't know exactly what the difference is until the new fare rolls out in june. and a piece of sports history is hitting the auction block. the golf clubs used in tiger's slam are going up for auction. tiger woods used the clubs when he became the first golfer to hold all four major titles at the same time during the 2001 season. even though they are dinged and dirty, golden age auctions expects the clubs to fetch upward of $1 million which, anne-marie, would set a record. the online bidding is now open. with these major auctions, i always wonder do you play with the clubs, do you put them in your attic somewhere where so many golf clubs end up to begin with? >> this what i think people need to know -- if you buy those clubs, that doesn't mean your game's going to improve. ot the. .> exactly.takes a lot opralen thank you so much. >> reporter: thanks.

this morning we're learning more about a teenager that got the scare of his life when he was caught in a texas tornado. this video shows the red pickup truck being driven by 16-year-old riley leon getting tossed and landing on its wheels during monday's tornado. he was heading home from a job interview when his world suddenly went upside down. he somehow took it in stride. >> if god will give me another chance because better things were going to come in the future. never let small things bring you down. >> here's the twist -- while his truck did get banged up, leon got the job at whataburger and starts next week. good things were to come. scientists say it an unprecedented number of migrating crabs invaded the streets of cuba's coastal towns as they make their annual trip from the forest to sea. it seems that after two years of less trafficked streets and peaceful migrations due to the pandemic the crab population has exploded.

the multicolored crabs come out at dawn and dusk climbing up the walls of houses and filling the streets as they head off to sea to spawn. and british "vogue" is paying tribute to queen elizabeth in honor of her platinum jubilee marking her 70-year reign. the queen featured in a photo taken by her late brother-in-law during her early years will grace the cover of the april issue. this is the first time a photograph of the queen has been on the cover of british "vogue." the magazine is doubling up on royalty with twin covers. the other one shows the "queen's gambit" actress anya taylor-joy wearing a replica of a crown made for king george iv. coming up first on "cbs mornings," the executive producer of the new acclaimed series "pachinko" sue hughes joins us in the time square studio. i'm anne-marie green. this is the "cbs morning news."
