>> we are starting off with near normal temperatures this morning. we will end up several degrees above average this afternoon. normal temperatures for sunday afternoon. passing clouds sunday and monday but we will remain dry and temperatures will warm-up again. it will be hot by the middle and end of the next work week. temperatures will be up to 10 degrees above normal. upper 60s and low 70s around the bay. 10 degrees above average inland. closer to 80 degrees for far inland portions of the east bay . the system passing to the north is sending clouds monday and tuesday and then we will see high pressure taking over that will press down on us and compress the air and that means it warms up into the 80s for in them portions of the bay area as early as wednesday. we will take a look at the

specifics coming up in a few minutes. sake and now to the war in ukraine. new video provides the extent of the devastation and mariupol. entire blocks of apartment buildings are black and. cars are sitting on the street including one from the organization for security and cooperation in europe. tens of thousands of civilians have been trapped without access to food and clean water. around the capital city of kyiv, retreating russian forces are leaving behind a catastrophic situation. the russians have left minds and abandon equipment and even bodies around the houses. he wants residence on holding off on returning to normal activity until they are assured the minds have been cleared.

and today ukraine and allies say mounting evidences russia is retreating and building up troop strength in areas further east. sake the death of a los altos high school student may have been fentanyl overdose. officers are putting out that were to prevent further tragedy . the news came hours after the county declared war on fentanyl. the powerful drug is responsible for eight death so far this year. most of the victims were between the ages of 18 and 25. to address that crisis the county put together a 15 many team of experts in addiction, health policy and law enforcement. the da's office is leading cartels know that if arrested they could face felony charges at sea we hope to worn dealers

about the dangers of fentanyl and they could be prosecuted for murder if they do it again . >> the county says is trying to take a compassionate approach to education and using social media to get the message out. they will be passing out testing strips to help people know if their drugs are tainted with fentanyl. police have announced new developments in a larger cash reward for more information. investigators believe the murder and the disappearance are related. >> it is sad because i can't see her smile anymore. it makes me angry because it was stolen. >> reporter: her sister shared memories of the godmother found buried in a shallow grave at mclaren park six years ago.

the body of the 32-year-old single mom was found under plywood with the symbol spray- painted on it. >> it was rare to not see a smile on her face. even when times were hard for her, you know, she put on a good face. >> police boosted the reward to $250,000 in the homicide and search for her missing daughter . investigators determined that then two-year-old was in the care of her babysitter and her husband when she disappeared. >> we are asking every person who saw our new interacted with the coal on that day at the days before to think back to that time. no detail is too small. >> reporter: investigators say they have turned up new leads, but no one has been arrested. multiple people who have direct knowledge of the case have not been cooperative. this is a progression photo of what the little girl could look

covid anymore. >> the fear is they will pick up the omicron sub variant known as ba 2. >> it is more transmissible. >> reporter: this expert says that while 10 states outside of california are seeing cases go up, the bay area has relatively low case counts. that is expected to change. >> we don't think is going to be traditional. there will probably be a low to moderate increase that may cause some disruptions in schools and workforce. >> reporter: california schools handed out 14 million rapid tests to students and staff. it is not mandatory the bay area schools are asking people to use them. >> i feel like my friends would not put me at risk.

>> reporter: some local districts have lifted the mask mandate but others require masks indoors. they will reevaluate on april 15 depending on the covid numbers. >> if the cases are going up, i will probably put my mask back on. >> reporter: schools recommend testing on friday and saturday before returning on monday, april 11. kpix 5. taking a live look at san francisco restaurant week is making a comeback, it is just one of the big food events making a big recovery. take large crowds of people going out to eat and drink and enjoy themselves with a sign that perhaps we are turning a corner. some of the biggest culinary offensive returning to san francisco. >> call it a sign of the times.

a southern california judge has struck down a state law that required court purports to have members of different races or sexual orientations. the judge ruled it violates the constitution. a similar law requiring one woman on each corporate board is being challenged. happening now after years of delays, traffic is moving along the new vanness corridor. we tested it out. >> to san francisco leaders say these new bus lanes will be using will significantly reduce

congestion here on vanness. >> reporter: after of ribbon- cutting years in the making, muni and golden gate transit buses are on the vanness red carpet known as the bus rapid transit or brt lanes. the project revamped vanness and how traffic operates within the corridor. >> this will be a meaningful change reducing the travel time by 30% and making public transportation more attractive to people. >> she was eager to see what it would be like to get around with the new system. >> this is great for tourists and residents. >> bus drivers don't have to worry about pulling out into traffic. >> reporter: the red lanes are meant for buses only. some people learned the hard

some of the biggest obstacles that bicycle lists face. the city says it is working to bring that situation back into balance with sensitivity to both groups. california is sitting on millions of dollars of deposit money. the governor's office wants a temporarily double was cycling return rates on bottles and cans as an incentive for people to bring back more of them. the program would start after july 1. researchers are trying to finish, there should've been five feet with their standing but the snowpack is 38% of average which is the worst it is been and seven years. san francisco is implementing a 5% surcharge.

the surcharge is supposed to cover the lost revenue. it is only going to be a temporary charge. as we head into the weekend, the storm track will stay to the north once again. all of the moisture and energy will go to the pacific northwest. we will see passing clouds overhead and that will linger into monday. there is an outside chance of a sprinkle. let's check out future cast as we go through the first half of today. passing clouds will be with us this afternoon. we will be dry. increasing cloud cover on monday with a few showers trying to make their way to northern and western sonoma county. we are talking about a 10% chance at a trace of moisture there.

still a good chance of below average rainfall. in the 6 to 10 day outlook, there are signs of hope. it will take us all the way through the month. a weak signal but it is still a signal toward above average rainfall for the bay area. the second full week of april, .04 inches of rain. we will keep a log on the long- range data. it is nice to see some sign that we will get some rain. a warm day today with temperatures above average. close to 10 degrees above average further inland. temperatures along the coast will be in the low 60s. upper 60s and low 70s around the peninsula with upper 70s and the santa clara valley and 77 in san jose. the warmest spots are at or

above 80 degrees for fairfield, antioch, and brentwood. temperatures in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees and then low to mid 70s for and then portions of the north bay. closer to 80 degrees for northern sonoma and mendocino and lake county as well. temperatures will dip 7 degrees tomorrow. we start warming up on tuesday and the warm weather kicks in on wednesday, thursday and friday. it will be on thursday with highs in the upper 70s and 80 degrees in oakland and upper 80s for san jose. it will touch 70 degrees along the coast. the cardinal and the final four made a familiar foe. they are struggling all night offensively. that they have

both were eventually stopped and arrested. it is the latest in a string of burglaries and robberies targeting high-end stores in the city. >> we have seen an increase in behavior that appears more desperate. >> reporter: last tuesday thieves hit this jewelry stores front window smashing and grabbing what was on display and getting away with an estimated $5 million worth of laying. >> we have increased the police presence in the area and armed private security. >> the goal is to prevent this kind of criminal activity and solve the crimes with the use of technology. >> we have added additional cameras and we have a drone pilot program we are utilizing that has produce great results. >> i feel pretty safe when i shop on rodeo but, you know, it does make me a little bit wary when i am here. i hope that

sake will smith has resigned from the academy of arts and motion pictures following his attack at the oscars. he said he betrayed the trust of the academy when he slapped chris rock at sunday's award show. it was in response to a comment he made about his wife, jade up. the academy condemned the action . it is pretty obvious this was a violation of the academy's code of conduct and the process are likely to go through in that situation would seem to be heading in the direction of an expulsion. >> smith said he would accept any further consequences the academy deems appropriate. the countdown is on for music's biggest night. we will learn who won one of last

bay, it will be warm with temperatures in the upper 60s to 70 degrees. warmer and warmer the further inland you go. closer to 80 degrees for napa and sonoma counties. temperatures will dip about five to 7 degrees tomorrow. we will stay in that same territory on monday. warm weather really kicks in wednesday through friday and this heatwave will be on thursday with highs in the upper 70s in san francisco, 80 and oakland and upper 80s for inland portions of the east bay and the north bay and touching 70 degrees along the coast. a north bay structural engineer notice a shortage of skilled workers so he crafted a solution that builds work opportunities and gives back to the community.

millions of people in ukraine have had to leave their homes trying to escape the war. they are facing on uncertain future. it is a situation that latin americans know all too well. we learn how they are stepping up to help. >> reporter: a labor of love for nonprofits. making tamales for those in need for people they've never met before but feel connected to. >> food is what brings people together. >> reporter: they work with refugees on international borders all year long. some of them are working here. jorge sanchez is filling bags of tamales to raise money. he remembers waiting in a tent to enter the u.s. not long ago.

better life as they escape the war zone. >> my message to her is that there is always hope and they will make it out of there. >> reporter: kpix5 middle school students felt as we wait to help ukrainian refugees. they held a huge banks. the students and parents in palo alto laid out the goods and customers gobbled up everything from cookies and brownies to doughnuts and rice crispy treats. organizing money was the least they can do. >> when the war first broke out in ukraine, a lot of families and parents in the community were feeling pretty powerless to help in any way i tried to affect some kind of change. many people enter community have connections with ukraine
