well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. as evidence mounts and outrage grows, ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy will address the u.n. security council virtually today. zelenskyy visited the town of bucha yesterday littered with military vehicles. ukraine says hundreds of civilians were found dead there after russian troops retreated last week. many were shot at close range with their hands bound and signs that they had been tortured. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest on this story. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. this is the first time president zelenskyy has left the capital of kyiv to see it with his own eyes. he is determined that the world will see them, too, and we should warn you that some of the images in this story are disturbing. today volodymyr zelenskyy will

tell the united security council about what he saw in the town of bucha. zelenskyy says more than 300 people were killed and tortured before russian forces were driven out. video from the kyiv suburbs shows bodies of dead civilians lining the streets, some with their hands tied and shot from close range. >> burned and destroyed. >> richard weir is gathering evidence of potential war crimes for human rights watch. >> i think what we've seen here is pretty strong indications that a number of willful killings or murders took place. >> reporter: the u.s. and other countries are seeing to suspend russia from the u.n. human rights council. two-thirds of the 193 members would need to vote in favor. >> the images out of bucha and devastation across ukraine require us now to match our words with action. >> reporter: president biden says russian president vladimir putin should be tried for war cimes.

>> he is a war criminal. this guy is brutal. >> reporter: russian officials claim the scenes in bucha were staged as an anti-russian provocation. >> in western mass media, fake news about alleged atrocities of russian military forces. >> reporter: u.s. military officials believe russia pulled out of kyiv to focus on a full-scale attack in the southeast donbas region. now, despite the russian denials, evidence of war crimes is seriously mounting. satellite images overhead show blood bodies lying in the same place, lying for weeks as russia took control of bucha. two more republicans are backing the nomination of ketanji brown jackson as the first black female on the supreme court. senators lisa murkowski and mitt

romney announced they will vote for jackson. susan collins said she would also. all 50 democrats are expected to support the historic nomination. republicans who oppose her say that she's soft on crime. >> if you are a criminal, you would be lucky if your case is assigned to judge jackson. >> to say she's an extremist on crime belies the fact she has law enforcement group after law enforcement group supporting her. these are just lies. >> democrats say jackson should be confirmed by the senate later this week. and police in sacramento have arrested a man in connection to a mass shooting that left six people dead and 12 others hurt over the weekend. authorities say 26-year-old dandrae martin is a related suspect in the case. this is a mugshot from a previous arrest. he's facing assault and firearms charges but not murder. detectives say they found one handgun while searching three homes in the area, but at least one other suspect remains on the loose. last night the community held a vigil for the victims.

they're calling for public officials to take action after the second shooting in just one month. nichelle medina has the latest. >> reporter: a chaotic scene in downtown sacramento as people run from gunfire. >> we find people down. >> we've got another one hit, another gunshot. >> reporter: sacramento police now say they've arrested 26-year-old dandrae martin as a suspect connected to the mass shooting just two blocks away from california state capital building. martin was arrested and booked for assault and possession of an illegal firearm. investigators say multiple shooters opened fire as crowds were streaming out of closing bars early sunday morning. while a motive for the shooting has not been identified, police are also sri viewing this video of a fight that broke out right before the gunfire. it's unclear if the two are connected. in the aftermath, family members and friends rushed to the scene to try and find missing loved ones.

that's where the father of one learned his son was among the casualties. >> i understand he walked out the club and walked into some [ bleep ] and got shot. >> reporter: nationwide there's been 120 mass shootings since the start of the year. thattages averages out to more than one a day, and that's the second mass shooting in five weeks. >> it is a sickness in our culture and we must do everything we can to heal that sickness. >> reporter: investigators haven't yet said what types of weapons were used in the shooting. this is the worst mass shooting in sacramento history. nichelle medina, cbs news, los angeles. well, the fight against covid is being stepped up. top democratic and republican negotiators say they've reached an agreement on a scaled back $10 billion package for treatments, vaccines, and other

measures to combat the virus. a proposal to improve funding for other nations to battle the pandemic was cut out. president biden who warned the government was running out of money to keep pace with covid says he supports the package. and starting monday people on medicare can get up to eight free covid tests a month. private insurance companies began covering the cost of the tests earlier this year, but medicare recipients were supposedly left out. new york city wants people in florida unhappy with their state's so-called don't say gay bill to come to the big apple. he announced a digital campaign board for eight weeks starting monday. one of the ads says come to the city where you can say whatever you want. the other four have similar messages. it comes one week after governor desantis signed a bill into law prohibits instruction on sexual orientation and identification

nasdaq gained 271 points, and the s&p 500 rose 36 points. starbucks stocks fell yesterday after interim ceo howard schultz took the helm and announced that he was suspending the company's share buyback program. schultz says he wants to invest more on his store and workers. the announcement comes at a time when employees are pushing to union. nine starbucks locations including its roastery flagship have alrin new york city alread voted to unionize. car rental company hertz is looking to boost its electric vehicle fleet. hertz says it will buy up to 65,000 vehicles from electric vehicle manufacturer polestar over the next five years. the environmentally-friendly cars are expected to be available at hertz locations in the u.s. sometime later this year. and coca-cola is out with a new flavor that has some people scratching their heads. the new company - the company says the new coca-cola zero

reportedly not be performing. coachella organizers have been scrambling to find replacements. and britney spears is set to pen a new memoir. the 40-year-old singer announced the news on instagram yesterday. spears said that she's writing the book and that it's healing and therapeutic. the post was later deleted. no word on a release date. in 2000 she co-authored an autobiography, and last november spears ended her conservatorship. it seems she can carry a tune but not for the grammy she won for doing so. olivia rodrigo dropped and broke one of the three trophies she won sunday night. the 19-year-old singer laughed off the incident which happened backstage during a photo op. luckily they were able to put it back together. she took home best pop album, best new artist, and best pop solo performance.
