authorities say at least two people have died, one in georgia and one in texas, after tornadoes and powerful storms swept through the region. one of the hardest hit areas of bryan county in eastern georgia. a suspected tornado ripped apart a roof of a local courthouse an reported in the area. surveillance video captured a possible twister near jackson, mississippi. it knocked over trees and left thousands of people without power. at one point last night, some 50,000 homes and businesses were left in the dark from eastern texas to south carolina. mark strassmann takes a look at the damage. >> reporter: what you're seeing is a tornado, allendale, south carolina. >> reporter: the skies lit up with tornadoes tearing across the south. this giant twister was seen outside of allendale, south carolina, the town of about 3,000 people is believed of to taken a direct hit. the system spawned at least 25 tornadoes across the south. it moved through several states

including louisiana, alabama, and mississippi. in texas at least four people had to be rescued from flash flooding. through south carolina and georgia the storm downed trees and power lines and left a trail of damage. one woman was home here when the storm hit. she's fine. her neighbor's house was also hit. they told us in that moment it sounded like a bomb went off. mark strassmann, cbs news, decatur, georgia. the u.s. and its european allies will impose tough new sanctions on russia today including a ban on all new investments in russia. it comes after new evidence emerged of war crimes against ukrainian civilians. the biden administration is also sending an additional $100 million worth of military equipment to ukraine. in the ukrainian city of lviv, hundreds of yellow and blue candles were lit during a vigil to honor civilians killed in the invasion. laura podesta is in new york with the latest on this. laura, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. russia's now pulled out of most of northern ukraine in order to focus on the donbas region. ukraine's president says that the atrocities we're seeing in cities like bucha are just the beginning of the devastation left behind by russian troops. the white house is ramping up the economic pressure on moscow and bolstering ukraine's military prowess. >> the biggest part of our objective is to deplete the resources that vladimir putin has to continue his war against ukraine. >> reporter: new sanctions will ban all new investment in russia and impose additional penalties on government officials and their family members. the biden administration is also sending $100 million worth of javelin anti-armor missiles to ukraine. >> translator: russia wants to turn ukraine into silent slaves. >> reporter: ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy told the united nations security council it is failing to stop russia's

brutality and showed them gruesome images from the town of bucha. tanya nedashkivska says her husband was taken away by russian troops. she found his body dumped at the bottom of a staircase. he's now buried in their garden. russia's ambassador to the u.n. accused ukraine of staging the atrocities. >> during the time that the town has been under the control of the russian armed forces, not a single local resident has suffered from any violent action. >> reporter: but u.s. officials say the reports of what's happening are more than credible. >> it's a deliberate campaign to kill, to torture, to rape. >> reporter: secretary of state antony blinken is at nato headquarters this week to discuss new ways to help ukraine. nato's secretary general says military and cybersecurity assistance as well as humanitarian aid are among the contributions nato can make. anne-marie? >> laura podesta in new york, % thank you so much.

former president trump's daughter and senior adviser ivanka testified virtually before the house committee investigating the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. she reportedly testified for about eight hours yesterday. ivanka trump was in the oval office on jan 6th. lawmakers said that they wanted to talk to her about a phone call her father had about trying to pressure then-vice president pence to reject the results of the 2020 presidential election. two more people are under arrest in connection with a mass shooting in sacramento that left six people dead and a dozen others hurt. 27-year-old smiley martin was arrested yesterday while hospitalized with bullet wounds from the shooting. he's accused of having a machine gun that a law enforcement source says was used in the attack. his brother, 26-year-old dandrae martin, was arrested monday as a related suspect. he appeared in court yesterday on assault and firearms charges. police are trying to determine how the brothers allegedly obtained the weapons.

>> our focus now is finding every single fact available to us, locating every piece of evidence, and gleaning the evidence to get justice for the victims. >> a third suspect was arrested, but he's not accused of taking part in the shooting. authorities were trying to determine if a street fight outside a nightclub may have sparked the shooting. a bill that would make performing an abortion in oklahoma a felony is heading to the governor's desk. the state legislature gave final approval to the measure yesterday. anyone convicted of providing an abortion could face up to ten years in prison and about $100,000 fine. the only exception is to save the life of the mother. republican governor kevin stitt is -- has indicated he will sign the bill. tiger woods is back. golf's biggest star says that he will play the masters as long as he's feeling well. it's been just over a year since a car crash almost ended his career. here's jim axelrod.

i don't show up to an event unless i think i can win it. >> reporter: tiger woods is back at the masters. the 46-year-old five-time champion confirmed what many of his fans were hoping to hear. >> as of now i feel like i am going to play. >> reporter: just 14 months ago woods severely injured his right leg in a car accident. he needed multiple surgeries just to walk again and at times wasn't sure if he'd ever return to the tour. >> we've worked hard to get to this point. i can hit it just fine. and i'm -- i don't have any qualms about what i can do physically from a golf standpoint. it's now walking is the hard part. >> reporter: woods played in a pro am with his son in december but has not competed in a pga event since 2020. here in augusta as speculation grew about a comeback after he arrived sunday and began practicing. if you hadn't been able to go, would you be satisfied with your career here and your career in

the dow lost 280 points. the nasdaq fell 328, and the s&p 500 was down 57. people paying off their federal student loans may get more time. the biden administration is expected to extend the freeze on federal student loan repayments through august 31st. the loan payments were set to resume on may 1st. no payments have been required on most federal student loans since the pandemic began in march, 2020, with interest and past collections on hold, as well. jetblue has made a surprise bid to buy spirit airlines. the $3.6 billion offer comes after frontier airlines put in their cash and stock offer worth $2.9 billion back in february. frontier's shares have since fallen, reducing the value of that offer. spirit airlines said its board will evaluate and decide what's best for its shareholders. and everyone's favorite baseball stadium snack just got a new teammate. move over cracker jack, and make room for cracker jill. for a limited time, frito-lay is
