saturday, april 9th. thank you for joining us. i'm devin fehely. start with a quick check of the weather with brian hackney. >> good morning. sunny and windy for today. gusts up to 30 miles per hour along the shoreline and this is of about a chance of rain is moving in on monday. the weekend looks sunny. in general, today, and tonight, fair skies. tomorrow, fire skies and cooler on sunday. then, a chance of showers return late sunday and monday. we get another chance after that coming in on thursday. in the meantime, have a great saturday. oakland police are trying to stop an alarming trend of bicyclists being robbed at gun point. groups are unfolding on busy streets. kpix 5s da lin spoke to a woman who had a gun pointed at her face. >> reporter: the victim said she hasn't touched a bike since the robbery. oakland police say she's the first victim in a series of armed robberies targeting

mountain bicycles. >> everything about it fit me perfect. the handlebars, the seat and i could lift it up. >> reporter: uck tell from the smile it brought her a lot of joy until last tuesday. she was riding solo on the skyline boulevard median trail near fire station 21. >> the first one said give me your bike. and i started to get off my bike. the one on the street came and pointed a gun at me and said give us your bicycle. >> reporter: she said that three masked people cornered her at 91 none. she jumped at noon. she jumped off her bicycle and drove into oncoming traffic. >> and to have a gun pointed the your face when you're out trying to clear you mind and enjoy nature is the worse possible experience. so upsetting and terrifying. >> reporter: police say after march 29th, they responded to two other robberies of mountain bicyclers on 62 iline boulevard near joaquin miller road. march 31st, robbers pulled a gun on a father and son to take their bike.

april 6th, wednesday, robbers took two bikes from two bicyclers riding together. there is a fourth this woke on a group of three bikers at the end of skyline boulevard. police have not confirmed the fourth case. >> we made the decision to move our practice location this week because of this rash of thefts. >> reporter: morgan fletcher and fellow volunteers coach about 100 middle school everiers how to bike the in oakland hills. >> we're guiding the children if someone asks for your bike, give them the bicycle. >> reporter: last april, i did a report on a group of robbers targeting bicyclists near grizzly peak. it's unclear if police arrested the group. the victims in the latest cases report the robbers driving the suv's and given the locations, the victims suspect the latest cases are connected judge we like to do noet drives and avoid that. >> reporter: many cost between 5 and $10,000 she said her bicycle was worth less but it was the perfect christmas gift

from her husband a few months ago. >> really afraid and upset. and scared to go back out on my bicycle right now. >> reporter: safety advocates used to tell people to ride with one other person and though, they're telling them to ride in big groups, strength in numbers. i'm da lin, kpix 5. oakland police are putting more officers in areas where they're seeing ay so to speak in robbers. overall, the number of robberies involving guns is down slightly compared to last year. san jose police are asking for the public's help finding driver who hit and killed a mother and driver. the crash happened before 6:30 thursday night on ocala avenue. the victims were if the crosswalk when a driver and pickup hit them and kept on going. the driver was last seen heading north on capitol expressway. the police released four pictures of the pickup. it's a newer model red gmc with a bed cover and it likely has front-end damage. >> we're responsible for two deaths. you need to turn yourself in

and take your statement. this is a very is tragic incident and hopefully, the person comes forward and is held account official for what they did. >> a family member tells us the mother and daughter live around the corper from where they were hit and killed. three alameda police officers will not face criminal charges in the case of a man who died ever being penned to the ground during the arrest. the officers confronted mario gonzalez in a park last medical april. a neighbor called 911 saying that gonzalez was acting erratically. the officers suspected him of shop lifting from a nearby store. gonzalez died after the officers pinned him face down on the ground for more than five minutes. an autopsy report ruled that the death was a homicide. the medical exam knower said the meth in his system was the primary cause of death. it also found that physical stress from that restraint played i role. gonzalez filed two federal civil lawsuits against the city.

to the coronavirus. the state health department issued new quarantine guidelines. people exposed to covid and remain asymptomatic are no longer encouraged to quarantine. the guidance is in line with cdc recommendations. however, unvaccinated employees in high-risk settings like jails and shelters are encouraged to quarantine for five days if exposed, even if not showing symptoms. >> california's test positivity rate is seeing a slight jump. 1.7% and that is 4.7 five days ago. covid case rates in california are on a slight increase. the positivity rate climbed a half percent the past week. still, the hospitals are not filling up. kpix 5s andrea nakano looks at the status of a possible transition from pandemic to epidemic. >> reporter: the demand for vaccines dropped steeply with many clinics cutting back hours or closing altogether. the question is how ready is

supply of eggs and driven up prices. the cost could rise into the summer. the avian flu has prompted zoos across the u.s. to take precautions. some facilities have completely closed the bird exhibits for the time being. others put their flamingos and penguins behind glass as a safety measure. and after the caldor fire forced the resource to temporarily down, the sierra at tahoe resort is reopening this weekend to host a special 75th anniversary event.
