mariupol. the ukrainian unit defending the port city made the claim in news yesterday. at least 10,000 people have died there, but the mayor fears that the death toll could double. british armed forces say that all options would be on the table if russia didid use chemil weapons. naomi ruchim is in new york with the latest on all of this. naomi, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. ukrainian officials are telling their citizens in the eastern part of the country to get out now as they brace for more aggressive attacks from russia. this comes as the united nations say millions of children have already been forced from their homes. austria's chancellor said he is not optimistic after meeting with russian president vladimir putin. it was not a friendly visit but a clear confrontation with the facts, he told reporters on monday, and he said it's obvious a massive russian offensive is being prepared in the east. >> the russians are, in fact, trying to resupply and reinforce their efforts in the donbas.

>> reporter: pentagon spokesman john kirby said russia's new commander known as the butcher of syria has a history of disregard for civilian strategies. >> we're probably turning another page in the same book. >> reporter: the brutality thus far is on full display in the port city of mariupol. its mayor says more than 10,000 civilians have died. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy warned that russia may use chemical weapons. the one group depending mariupol insists it already happened. >> if they are confirmed, that will be a further wholesale breach of international law. >> reporter: ukrainian officials are telling residents throughout the east to get out before the violence gets worse. according to the united nations, nearly two-thirds of all ildrenave fled their homes. >> children are being killed unfortunately through this war at incredible rates. >> reporter: the u.n. has

u.s. has ordered all nonemergency government staff to leave shanghai china as covid cases surge. the state department says the order is an upgrade from last week's voluntary advisory. some people in shanghai have been stuck in their homes for weeks under china's strict handling of isolation and mass testing. here in the u.s., indoor mask rule are back in philadelphia. it's become the first city to restart the policy, restarting next monday. >> reporter: coronavirus infections mostly driven by the ba.2 subvariant are rising especially in the northeast. in philadelphia where cases have increased by more than 50% in the past ten days, officials have reinstated an indoor mask mandate for public spaces. >> by wearing masks consistently, we can go ahead and take part without recurring transmission occurring. >> reporter: the spikes are being watched closely, but so

far the hospitalizations remain low, the lowest at any point during the pandemic small i do believe we're going to see cases go up and down. obviously if it gets sustantially worse, we're going to want to look at issues like masking, but at this moment, these numbers are still quite low. >> reporter: new york city mayor eric adams has canceled his classes for this week. he tested positive for covid and says he has mild symptoms and remains at home. >> if i get it, i get it. it's learned how to manage. covid is here to stay. >> reporter: in washington, d.c., congress has yet to approve new funding for the continued fight against the virus. the latest white house request is for $22.5 billion while the senate settled on a $10 billion compromise that has since been derailed. >> the question is what do we need this money for? we need it for vaccines, make sure we have plenty of testing available. >> reporter: if it is passed, the deal would be paid for by

spending unspent funds for the covid relief package enacted in march of 2021. elise preston, cbs news, new york. the nation's largest utility has agreed to pay more than $55 million to pay for civil cases. it allows pacific gas & electric to avoid criminal charges for causing last year's dixie fire and the previous kincade fire. the dixie fire destroyed more than 1,300 buildings and acres. the fires were sparked by the company's aging power lines. it still faces criminal charges for another wildfire in 2020 thatkilled four people. and president biden is taking aim at so-called ghost guns, the privately made fire arms that can be put together using a 3-d printer or unlicensed kits. erday des torackown on the homemade weapons that are increasingly being found at crime scenes across the u.s.

health officials believe the recent spike is being driven by the b.a. 2 variant. the mask mandate goes into effect on monday. with easter just a few days away, the price of eggs is on the rise. those costs are going up over several factors including a deadly bird flu outbreak. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: sam miller has more than 8 thousand hungry mouths to feed every day at cedar ridge egg farm in northeast texas. the rising cost of the corn and wheat feed is forcing miller to raise his egg prices. his feed bill for his growing business is up nearly $7,000 a month. >> if i don't jack my price up, i make a little bit. i don't make a lot off my egg. >> reporter: the war in ukraine and drought in the u.s. has pushed wheat and corn prices up significantly. that's driven up the price of eggs by 56%. last year the national average
