and mass transit systems in the u.s. is no longer required after a federal judge in florida struck down the national mask mandate. airlines and airports quickly began lifting the mask requirement after yesterday's ruling saying it's optional. for now airlines and airports can make their own decisions about face coverings. the cdc says it will no longer enforce the mask rule. new york's transit system says it plans to keep its mask mandate rules in place while others like washington, d.c., says it's optional on buses and trains. bradley blackburn is in new york. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: some airlines had been hoping for this change, tired of enforcing a rule that frustrated a lot of travelers and also led to bad behavior on planes. but this morning many flyers are saying mandate or not, their masks are staying on.

a mid-flight celebration after a federal judge struck down the mask mandate for airplanes and mass transit on monday. the court judge says it accepts that the masks will prevent the spread, but that alone is not enough. on the ground passengers were relieved to hear the news. >> i would say hallelujah. yeah, long past due. >> reporter: though some will continue masking up as a precaution. >> i'm keeping mine on tight. >> because we're already so close on the flight, i would rather wear a mask because i don't know these people. >> reporter: airports, airlines, and mass transit systems are now free to make their own decisions, and many of the nation's largest carriers quickly announced they will not require masks. >> so this is obviously a disappointing decision. >> reporter: the mandate to may 3rd

the cdc continues recommending wearing a mask on public tran cit. >> reporter: they originally extended the mask mandate to may 3rd. >> we don't know how the ba.2 variant is going to play out across the country. my advice as a physician to anybody traveling on a plane would be to continue wearing a mask when you're traveling on public trans poration. >> reporter: the justice department did not say whether it will seek an emergency stay to block the judge's order. now, the white house is saying that due to that court order, the mandate is not in effect at this time. the key words there. president biden put it in place after he took office in january 2021. but, of course, airlines had their own rules long before that. but clearly this morning change is in the air. >> yes, indeed, bradley. you could hear the sighs of relief from some of the travelers that you talked to. definitely a change in the air. bradley blackburn in new york, thank you. mask changes are also taking place at uber. starting today ride-hailing drivers and passengers no longer have to wear a face covering. the company is also letting

passengers sit in the front seat again, only if they're in a large group and there's not enough space in the back. after days of regrouping, russia's military has started to attack eastern ukraine. the full-scale ground offensive is targeting the region of donbas, but missile strikes still continue across the country, leaving no one safe. chris livesay reports from kyiv. >> reporter: the next chapter of the war is here. russian troops have begun the battle for donbas says ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy, a major development after russian troops pulled back from kyiv and turned their attention to the east, setting the stage for major clashes with tanks and heavy artillery unlike anything we've seen since world war ii. seen since world war ii, ukraine says, but there are no safe havens. russian air strikes killed at least seven people, the first known deaths in lviv close to the polish border and a refuge

for those fleeing the fighting. in kharkiv close to the russian border, shelling offers no rest for the wounded or the medics there to save them. but nowhere is the terror more total than mariupol. diehard defenders holed up in a steel mill refused to give up despite russia's ultimatum, surrender or die. it's a vin dic activeness. this appears to show russia's war ship attacked by ukrainian missiles in the black sea last week. and this area was supposed to mark a short swift win but instead a triumph for ukraine, shooting down this russian bomber last month. it crashed into this home killing the owner, but shockingly no more, its payload failing to explode when it landed on a neighbor's doorstep. but elsewhere, the bombs worked,

this one killing some 50 people in an apartment block, one of the deadliest single strikes of the war. all of a sudden i was covered in shattered glass, says llarisa. she takes me into her bunker where these women have been hiding for more than a month. >> are you afraid that they're going to come back? the war goes on, she says. we don't know what's waiting for us out there. chris livesay, cbs news, kyiv. meanwhile there is new information about a 14-year-old boy's deadly fall last month from a florida amusement park ride. an independent investigation into tyre sampson's death from a freefall ride says sensors were doubled to increase the size of the ride's openings. the report says sampson was not properly secured in his seat before he slipped out and fell to his death. >> this report answered the question of what mechanically took place as our investigation

now enters into the next phase of how and why it occurred as we look toward potential penalties along with any changes of rules and regulations needed to help prevent future tragedies. >> in a statement the owner of the ride said it followed, quote, all protocols, procedures, and safety measures provided by the ride's manufacturer. conspiracy theorist alex jones' company infowars has filed for bankruptcy protection. it comes after jones lost the defamation trial in which he made comments that the shooting at sandy hook was a hoax. he said he was maxed out completely financially. the bankruptcy was filed a week before a texas jury was to consider how much money jones should pay the families of sandy hook victims. >> actor johnny depp is expected

bindings on her wrist. prosecutors say she was actually staying with a former boyfriend nearly 600 miles away. she'll be sentenced in july. some doctors are calling for a renaming of a certain prostate cancer, and there's been a shooting at a mall. those are the morning headlines on this morning's newsstand. a suspect is under arrest in connection with a shooting at a columbia, south carolina, shopping mall last weekend. 20-year-old marqise love robinson was charged with attempted murder and nine counts of assault and battery. nine were shot and others were hurt in a rush to get away. no one was killed. >> the motive for the shooting has changed since what i briefly mentioned. there was some type of ongoing dispute betwen the people we've identified and the suspects so far. we have seized two handguns we believe were used in the shooting. >> police have identified and are searching for a third suspect. another man was arrested sunday.

the "associated press" says doctors are suggesting new names for low-grade prostate cancer to eliminate using the word "cancer." in an article in the clinical journal of oncology, doctors wrote the fear of cancer causes some patients to overreact and have unneeded surgery or radiation. a low-grade prostate cancer is literally incapable of causing symptoms or spreading to other parts of the body. and the "miami herald" say as 10'al gator took his sweet time as it strolled through a venice county, florida, neighborhood. the sarasota sheriff's office posted video on social media. video footage showed the gator slowly walking across yards on sunday. at one point it briefly laid down on a drive way and eventually returned to the lake it came from. still to come, america's most endangered river. we'll tell you which major river is being called ground zero for

date backes to 1878. on the "cbs moneywatch," a new report raises a red flag on a major american river, and a fan favorite returns to the menu at taco bell. elise preston is in new york with that and more. good morning, elise. >> good morning, diane. stock futures are pointing to a higher open this morning. among the companies reporting first quarter earnings results today are netflix, ibm, and johnson & johnson. yesterday the dow fell 39 points, the nasdaq dropped 19 points, and the s&p dropped a int. the colorado river has topped the list of the most endangered rivers. it made it ground zero for the water crisis. the colorado river provides drinking water to more than 40 million americans in seven states. your next package may take a little longer to get to its destination. the u.s. postal service says

it's slowing delivery times for nearly a third of all first-class packages by cutting relying more on trains and trucks. it's all part of an effort to reduce the $160 billion in projected losses for the postal service over the next decade. and taco bell is bringing back a fan favorite more than 200,000 people signed a petition to bring back the chain's mexican pizza, and it worked. taco bell announced the pizza will relaunch may 19th. the mexican pizza is made up of two crispy flour shells layered with beans, pizza sauce, seasoned meat, tomatoes, and a melted three-cheese blend. this has made my morning. this is my favorite. i was crushed when they took it off the menu. >> oh, my gosh, same. great minds think alike. it's perfect and just in time for taco tuesday, elise. >> we've got to go, my friend.

the cleveland browns confirmed it has spoken to an nfl investigator looking into allegations by former head coach hue jackson that he was paid to lose games. on social media in february jackson indicated the team paid him bonuses incentivizing him to lose and that he was set up to fail in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. he later softened those claims. jackson was fired from the browns early in if 2018 season. the team called the accusations categorically false and said they welcomed an investigation. the boston marathon was back to its prepandemic self on monday with some 28,000 runners taking to the streets. the marathon also celebrated the 50th anniversary since women were officially allowed to compete. it was a historic moment honored by many women including
