new phase of the war in ukraine as the battle for control of the eastern donbas region escalates. yesterday mr. biden said the u.s. is rushing an additional $1.3 billion in military and economic aid to ukraine. it comes as new satellite images show whatt appears to be mass graves near the port city of mariupol. that's where ukraine says russia has been burying thousands of mariupol residents killed in the fighting. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. vladimir putin has now claimed victory in mariupol and other cities in the donbas are under intense attack. it's why the u.s. and western countries are rushing supplies to help ukrainian forces that are running out of ammunition and time. the offensive in donbas has lent new urgency in the effort to help ukraine. >> we're in a critical window of time where they're going to set the stage for the next phase of this war.

>> reporter: yesterday president biden said the u.s. is rushing another $800 million worth of military equipment to kyiv. the shipments include advanced long-range artillery and anti-tank weapons systems. >> our unity with the ukrainian people is sending an unmistakable message to putin. he will never succeed in dominating and occupying all of ukraine. >> reporter: the president also announced $500 million in direct economic relief for ukraine, money intended to keep its government running. during a meeting with his defense minister, russian president vladimir putin declared victory in the strategically crucial city of mariupol. putin ordered his troops not to storm a steel plant where ukrainian soldiers and civilians remain holed up. putin said they should blockade it so tightly that not even a fly could escape. ukrainian officials say the battle for mariupol isn't over yet. they insist images show mass graves near the city where they accuse russia of burying up to

9,000 civilians. ukrainian officials say the photos are proof the russians are committing war crimes. and while the fighting goes on, ukraine's president, volodymyr zelenskyy, has been named a recipient of this year's john f. kennedy profile in courage award. president zelenskyy, by the way, says he proposed a truce with russia during orthodox easter sunday this weekend, but his offer was rejected. diane? >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. just days after becoming the first major u.s. city to reinstate its indoor mask pmandate, philadelphia is reversing course. yesterday the board of health voted to lift the mandate starting this morning. it cited decreasing hospitalizations and a leveling of what had been a sharp increase in most cases. the decision to reinstate the mandate on monday drew sharp criticism and lawsuits from businesses and residents. the city is recommending that

people still wear masks in indoor public spaces. president biden is expected to mark earth day today by signing an executive order protecting some of the biggest and oldest trees in the nation's forests. sources tell "the washington post" the plan will safeguard old growth forests. scientists say old trees collectively store billions of tons of carbon dioxide in their trunks, branches, and roots. the plan reportedly includes restoring forests devastated by drought and wildfires but does not ban the logging of old trees. wildfires burning in several western states could dramatically grow in size as strong winds return. half a dozen major wildfires have raced across arizona, new mexico, and colorado over the past week. ahead flag fire warnings are also in place in parts of texas and nebraska. the tunnel fire near flagstaff, arizona, has burned more than 20,000 acres, destroyed more than two dozen structures, and forced the evacuation of

hundreds of people. >> the environment is not very friendly. it was blowing 70 miles an hour, rocks were hitting everybody in the face. it was very smoky. we're working directly in the heat. these guys are working incredibly hard. they know the values at risk. this is their community. >> yesterday for the first time since the tunnel fire started on sunday, helicopters were able to drop water on the flames. some of the sexual assault victims of former u.s. and michigan state gymnastics team dr. larry nassar are seeking millions of dollars. 13 victims want the fbi to pay them $10 million each, alleging the agency's bungled investigation led to more abuse by nassar. last year the justice deartment's inspector general said the fbi made fundamental errors when it became aware of allegations against the doctor in 2015. he is serving decades in prison for assaulting female athletes. lawmakers in florida handed governor ron desantis a major victory over disney.

they're going after the state's largest employer after the company condemned the law that critics believe targets lgbtq students. here's manuel bojorquez. 70 ayes -- >> reporter: florida's legislature made good on the governor's threat. the move strips disney's special improvement district which allows it to govern and tax itself to provide roads, power and emergency services around its theme parks. it's been that way since 1967. >> we call it epcot -- >> reporter: but things soured when disney publicly criticized florida's parental rights and educational law which opponents call "don't say gay" because it prohibits school instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in grades k through 3. >> we're certainly not going to bend a knee to woke executives in california. >> reporter: this week, governor ron desantis asked lawmakers to dissolve disney's special district. >> is this retaliation? >> no, i don't think so. i think that when you kick the

ask you doctor about tremfya® today. the entertainment world is mourning the death of tony and emmy award-winning actor robert morse. his agent says he died at his home wednesday after a brief illness. in 1962, morse won a tony for his performance in the musical "how to succeed in business without really trying." he was also known as bert cooper onheerie"m robert morse was 90 years old. there's been an arrest in the murder of a new yor city mother, and mike tyson was involved in an altercation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports video shows former heavy weight boxing champ mike tyson punching a passenger on a jetblue airplane. the video posted by tmz shows tyson leaning over his seat wednesday and repeatedly striking a man in the head at san francisco international airport. it also shows the passenger apparently trying to talk to the

former champ before tyson got up. a spokesperson for tyson says the passenger harassed and threw a water bottle at him while he was in his seat. police say they detained two subjects who were released. the "associated press" says a suspect was charged with murder in connection with the stabbing death of a new york city woman found in a duffel bag. police say 44-year-old david bonola had an affair with 51-year-old orsolya gaal while working as a handyman in her home in queens. her body was found inside her son's hockey bag less than a mile from her home. investigators say the two had an argument in the basement early saturday morning. >> a knife is brandished, a violent struggle ensues resulting in our victim being stabbed ruthlessly and brutally in excess of 55 times causing her demise. >> police say they tracked the suspect down after looking at neighborhood security video. and "the washington post" says british lawmakers ordered an investigation into whether

prime minister boris johnson lied to parliament about illegal parties during the pandemic lockdown. johnson allegedly broke coronavirus restrictions by attending parties at his downing street residence. he was fined by police last week for attending his own birthday party in his office in june of 2020. he apologized but says he did not lie. still will to come, "late show" diagnosis. host stephen colbert has tested positive for covid-19. how he says he's feeling. buy twitter, and the world's biggest food company is signaling more price hikes. naomi ruchim is in new york with that and more. good morning, naomi. >> reporter: good morning. stock futures are pointing to a flat open this morning. major indices all saw losses yesterday after the head of the federal reserve said the central bank needs to take more aggressive action to fight inflation. it could mean a half-point rate hike when the fed meets next month. the dow lost 368 points, the nasdaq was down 278, and the s&p 500 fell 65 points. elon musk says he has lined up $46.5 billion in financing in his latest bid to buy twitter. that's according to documents filed yesterday with securities regulators. the money will come in morgan stanley and other banks. twitter says it has received musk's updated proposal, and its board is conducting a careful review. less than a month after its launch, cnn's streaming service,

cnn plus, is shutting down. it sank tens of millions into the venture. the company says it will find spots for some of the new employees, but there will also be layoffs. cnn plus was charging users $5.99 a month. the service will stop operating on april 30th. and give me a break. some of your favorite chocolate candy may cost you even more this year. nestle, the maker of kit kat bars, raised prices more than 5% between january and march. the company released its first quarterly earnings report yesterday. the ceo warned of more increases in 2022 because of inflation. according to the u.n. food price index, food prices across the globe are at the highest levels since records began 60 years ago. we keep hearing about inflation impacting everything, but not our chocolate. >> no. i mean i guess don't break me off a piece of that kit kat bar. >> unless you're willing to pay
