and the latest atrocity carried out by russian forces. you are looking at what the is left of a school in eastern ukraine that was being used as a shelter. the building was hit by russian bombs, and now more than 60 people are feared dead. meanwhile this morning, in moscow russian troops marched through the streets to mark vctory day. russian president vladimir putin led the national holiday which marks the defeat of the nazis in world war ii. with the very latest.in new yor- good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. during those celebrations, we heard directly from vladimir putin just a short time ago. he is trying to rally russians by suggesting his invasion of ukraine is unfinished business from world war ii, falsely saying ukraine is controlled by nazis. and he also claimed that russia had to act because the west was planning its own invasion of russian lands. it is another sign this war is far from over. russia is observing victory day, a celebration of the 1945 defeat of nazi germany in world war ii.

this morning russian leader vladimir putin attended a military parade in moscow's red square. putin has described the invasion of ukraine as an effort to denazify it. some believe putin might use the occasion to formally declare war on ukraine. doing so would make it easier to mobilize troops to aid what the kremlin calls a special operation against its much smaller neighbor. >> there were a lot of hopes that putin and that people in the kremlin just could proclaim a victory and somehow deescalate. now we know that the 9th of may is not going to be the date. >> never again -- >> reporter: in a new video, ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy said evil invaded the country. officials say as many as 60 were killed in a russian attack at a school being used as a shelter. in a surprise visit, first lady jill biden met with ukraine's first lady in the western part of the country. a mother's day show of solidarity.

president biden spoke with g7 leaders and president zelenskyy on sunday. they are promised new even tougher sanctions on russia's industrial sector and on russia's state-controlled television stations. anne-marie? >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you so much. >>former defense secretary mark esper is making some shocking allegations about former president trump while he served in his administration. in an interview on "60 minutes" promoting his new book he told "cbs evening news" managing editor norah o'donnell that then-president trump proposed bombing mexico. >> the president pulls me aside on at least a couple of occasions and suggests that maybe we have the u.s. military shoot missiles into mexico. >> reporter: for what? >> he would say to go after the cartels. we would have this private discussion where i'd say, mr. president, you know, i understand the motive -- because he was very serious about dealing with drugs in america. i get that.

the latest lead, this ford edge abandoned in a rural tennessee neighborhood. inside jail keys and handcuffs. marshals released these photos of the two who are not related, showing the 6'9" casey white's white supremacist tattoos s and what vicky white would look like if she darkened her hair. this shows the pair leaving the alabama jail in a patrol car april 29. vicky white claimed she was taking casey white to the courthouse for a mental health evaluation. but there was no evaluation. >> this was a very well thought out plan. >> reporter: before the jailbreak, officials believe vicky white bought an ar-15 and a shotgun, sold her house, withdrew $90,000, and filed for retirement. >> we're going to find you. hopefully we find you safe. >> reporter: the two are considered armed and dangerous. there's a reward of $15,000 being offered for information leading to casey white's arrest and $10,000 for vicky white's arrest. michael george, cbs news, new

york. the death toll from a powerful explosion that ripped through a luxury hotel in havana, cuba, is now up to at least 31 people. search crews with dogs combed through the rubble looking for surivors. the 19th century building was preparing to reopen after being closed for two years when a suspected gas leak ignited on friday. more than 50 people were hurt, and several nearby buildings were also damaged. the state department says that it is closely watching an investigation into what killed three american tourists at a resort in the bahamas. a fourth woman was also hospitalized. lilia luciano has more. >> reporter: investigators in the bahamas are searchinfodeud deaths of three american nd resort in exhuma. police don't expect foul play but the grim discovery is making tourists anxious. >> i'm going to be more aware. just on edge.

>> reporter: in one villa authorities found a man dead and a woman who needed medical care. she was airlifted to a hospital. in a second villa police discovered another couple. the man slumped against the bathroom wall and the woman on the bed, both dead. the two had complained of feeling sick the night before. >> like most tourists, we like to know what happened and why it happened. just so we can be cautious. >> reporter: authorities do not believe any hotel guests are in danger. >> our investigations were up to late last night, and we feel that what we are seeing is an isolated case. >> reporter: i reached out to the commissioner of the royal bahamian police force. he told me the identities will be released monday. lilia luciano, cbs news. the national weather service is warning a potentially historic critical weather event is threatening new mexico and other parts of the southwest. a combination of powerful winds and hot and dry air could rapidly spread huge wildfires are that already burning. new mexico is battling at least half a dozen large fires including the hermit's peak fire

serves as a bomb shelter. he was joined by the edge yesterday for the 40-minute concert. bono tweeted that ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy invited them to perform in the capital as a show of solidarity with the ukrainian people. a sherpa broke a record on mount everest, and a suspicious fire is under investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wisconsin state journal" reports a fire at a madison anti-abortion rights office is being investigated as arson. police say a molotov cocktail was found where the fire broke out yesterday at the wisconsin family action office. there was also a spray painted message outside the building. nobody was hurt, and it's not clear who vandalized the office. the incident happened amid nationwide protests days after a leaked supreme court majority draft opinion indicates it may soon overturn roe versus wade. it comes as a brand-new cbs news poll shows 64% of americans

think the supreme court should keep roe versus wade as is. 36% say the court should overturn it. the bbc says more than 1,100 pounds of cocaine were found in a shipment of coffee sent to an nespresso plant. workers alerted police last week after finding white powder that arrived by train. an initial investigation shows the shipment came from brazil. authorities say that the cocaine is 80% pure with an estimated street value of more than $50 million. and "usa today" says a nepalese sherpa broke his own record by climbing mount everest for the 26th time. officials say the 52-year-old man reached the 29,000-foot peak on saturday alongside a group of ten other sherpas. they fixed ropes on the route to the summit ahead of an expected increase in climbers later this month. the record-breaking sherpa first reached the summit in 1994.

2022 so far beating out "the batman." bitcoin is continuing to slump, and a record-setting white diamond is going up for auction. elise preston has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: an eventful week on wall street ended on a down note friday. the dow fell 98 points. the nasdaq dropped 173, and the s&p 500 was off 23. a bad week for the cryptocurrency market was followed by an even worse weekend. on sunday, bitcoin's price dipped below $34,000. roughly half of what it sold for less than six months ago. other cryptocurrencies have experienced similar declines. a mega diamond known as the rock will be up for bid this week. the 228-carat gem is believed to be the largest ever to hit the auction block. the rock had previously been worn as the centerpiece of a cartier necklace. christie's expects it will sell

million for children's medical center in ukraine. israeli police have arrested the suspects wanted for killing three people in a stabbing rampage near tel aviv. video shows the arrests of two palestinians in connection with last thursday's killings. they say the men were armed with an axe and a knife. the attack happened on israel's independence day. four others were injured. an investigation is under way into how two people were struck and killed by an amtrak train in maine. investigators say the two people were trespassing on the train tracks when a train traveling from boston to brunswick came through the town of bidford. police say 81 people were on the train, but no one on the train was hurt. and talk about a bizarre story -- police in texas are looking for a thief who stole someone's lawnmower, but the suspect made sure to take care of the lawn beforehand. take a look at this. port arthur police say that this video shows the thief gassing up the mower and then pushing it out of the victim's driveway.

corrections officer vicky white disappeared on april 29th. this week a 13-year-old whiz kid is graduating from college. caroline cummings of our minneapolis station wcco caught up with him. >> reporter: elliott tanner is just like any 13-year-old. >> i like to play "dungeons and dragons" with friends. sometimes also some video games, too. >> reporter: except for the fact that he can solve this -- >> i have an incredible passion for physics. it's been one of my favorite things to do. >> reporter: he's pursuing that passion at the university of minnesota where he's studying for a bachelor's degree when most kids his age aren't yet in high school. keeping a 3.78 gpa and doing undergraduate research, too. >> it's a tiny fast-movng neutral particle that will go through about a light year of lead and hardly interact with it. >> reporter: wow. >> and what we're trying to do is we're trying to detect those. >> reporter: when elliott graduates this week he won't be going far.
