well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president biden and the flowed -- the first lady are planning to visit buffalo, new york, tomorrow as the city mourns the victims of a mass shooting at a supermarket. police identified the alleged gunman as 18-year-old payton gendron of conklin, new york. that's about 200 miles from buffalo. he appeared before a judge saturday. he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges. ten people were killed and three others wounded in what officials are calling a racially motivated attack. most of the victims were black. bradley blackburn is in buffalo this morning with the very latest on all of this. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. this parking lot is where the shooting started before moving inside the tops grocery store. 11 of those 13 victims were black, and police do believe they were targeted specifically because of their race. the city of buffalo, new york, is in mourning after a mass shooting left ten dead at a

supermarket. >> this is not open season on african americans. >> reporter: investigators say suspect payton gendron specifically targeted the store because he wanted to kill as many black people as possible. the 18-year-old has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges. >> the evidence that we have uncovered so far makes no mistake that this is an absolute racist hate crime. >> reporter: last year police questioned him after he reportedly made threats at his high school in conklin, new york. >> they interviewed the subject and felt it was appropriate at this time to have that individual brought in for a mental health evaluation. state police did their job to the fullest that they could at that time. >> reporter: buffalo residents said they were astonished by the allegations. >> it boggles my mind that this young man traveled 200 miles, four hours, to target our community. it boggles the mind. >> reporter: president biden condemned the attack on sunday. the white house says the president and first lady will come here to buffalo tomorrow to join the city in mourning. police say gendron live streamed the attack.

though a spokesperson from the site insists it was pulled down within two minutes, it does raise questions about what more social media companies could or should be doing to prevent publicizing violence. and if the suspect is convicted, he could face life in prison without parole. one other note here -- this store is an anchor in this community. the only grocery store option for many people in the area who may not have access to a car. so until it can reopen, tops is offering shuttle buses to another location. determined that the shooter won't take anything away from this community. >> wow. bradley blackburn in buffalo, thank you so much. so following the mass shooting president biden voiced his anger about gun violence here in america. but as christina ruffini reports, it's unlikely lawmakers will find common ground on this controversial issue. we must all work together to address the hate. >> reporter: despite nearly 200

mass shootings already this year, lawmakers on capitol hill have been unable to find a way forward on gun control. >> well of course we are trying to do someting about gun violence. >> reporter: senator chris murphy says they need to try harder. >> i just think we can find common ground on some of these measures, targeted measures like restricting the size of magazines. if we can't, why not just put it up for a vote and show americans which side that you're on. >> reporter: the shooting came just one day after the president urged local officials to spend $10 billion of that american rescue plan money on public safety. >> taking action today is going to save lives tomorrow. >> reporter: a recent cbs news poll found 59% of americans say crime should be a higher priority issue. 61% disapprove of how the president is handling it. the brady campaign against gun violence issued a statement urging all leaders from local to federal to use this tragedy as an opportunity to act. christina ruffini, cbs news, the

white house. ahead on "cbs mornings," we'll get an update on the buffalo shooting investigation from mayor byron brown and find out how the community is coping with this tragedy. police in southern california are investigating another deadly shooting. this time at a church. one person was killed and five others wounded yesterday -- in yesterday's shooting at a presbyterian church in laguna woods. it happened during a lunch reception. the suspect identified as an asian man in his 60s was taken into custody. investigators say up to 40 people were inside the church at the time, and most are believed to be of taiwanese descent. police credited church-goers with saving lives. >> we believe a group of church-goers detained him and hog-tied his legs with an extension cord and confiscated at least two weapons. he was detained when the deputies arrived. >> there's no word on a possible motive for this shooting. house speaker nancy pelosi says lawmakers will take up two pieces of legislation this week to help ease the nationwide

shortage of baby formula. she says that one bill would loosen some of the red tape impacting how people can buy formula, and the other would allow the u.s. to purchase formula from other countries. meanwhile, transportation secretary pete buttigieg says the biden administration is working to end the baby formula shortage. yesterday on "face the nation" he said the government acted quickly after the nation's leading supplier of baby formula, abbott nutrition, announced a recall in february due to bacteria concerns at a michigan plant. >> companies make formula, and one of those companies, a company which by the way seems to have 40% market share messed up and is unable to confirm that a plant, a major plant is safe and free of contamination. the most important thing is to get that plant in michigan up and running safely. >> on friday, president biden said that there would be significantly more formula on

store shelves in a matter of weeks. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell says that he expects the senate will approve an additional $40 billion aid package for ukraine. mcconnell says that he believes the chamber will vote on the measure wednesday. it's being held up over the objection of kentucky senator rand paul. the house has already approved the package. mcconnell and three other republican senators made a surprise visit to kyiv on saturday to meet with ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy. yesterday mcconnell said finland and sweden would be important additions to nato after both nations expressed interest in joining the alliance. he is also calling on president biden to designate russia as a state sponsor of terrorism over its invasion of ukraine. so coming up, health emergency on the campaign trail. a senate candidate in pennsylvania suffers a setback at a high-profile race. and suspending fears. thrill-seekers walk across a new record-breaking bridge. this is the "cbs morning news."

some businesses in china's biggest city are being allowed to reopen today after a six-week lockdown due to a surge in covid cases. authorities say supermarkets, malls, and restaurants in shanghai can open in a limited capacity. a city official says it is aiming to allow normal life to resume june 1st. the city is now seeing a decline in daily new infections. a new record-breaking bridge opened, and a senate candidate suffered a health emergency. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "pittsburgh post-gazette" reports pennsylvania lieutenant governor john fetterman, front-runner in tomorrow's democratic u.s. senate primary, is recovering from a stroke. in a statement yesterday, the 52-year-old said that he suffered a stroke last week from a blood clot caused by an irregular heartbeat. he said doctors were able to completely remove the clot and reverse the stroke.

he also said doctors told him that he did not suffer any cognitive damage. the "chicago tribune" says mayor lori lightfoot ordered a curfew banning unaccompanied minors from millennium park after a 16-year-old was shot and killed. authorities say that he was shot during an altercation near a popular tourist attraction known as the bean. police say a 17-year-old male believed to be the shooter was taken into custody. more than two dozen minors and five adults were also arrested at the park. eight guns were confiscated. >> too many guns are making their hands way into the hands of those who have too little respect for the sanctity of life. gun violence has somehow become the commonplace solution to petty grievances and conflicts. >> minors without an adult will not be allowed in the park after 6:00 p.m. thursdays through sundays. and "reuters" says tourists felt fear and adrenaline as the
