first trip to asia since taking office. speaking in japan, mr. biden said that he would be willing to use military force if china invaded taiwan. he said the burden to protect taiwan is even stronger after russia's invasion of ukraine, and reaffirmed his commitment to defending japan. the white house later issued a statement saying there was no change in policy toward taiwan. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is not the first time the president has made this kind of remark about taiwan or the first time the white house has tried to roll it back. while geopolitics are center stage on this trip to asia, the white house says the real focus here is trade. president biden arrived in tokyo last night on a mission to revive u.s. interests on the other side of the globe. this morning, emperor naruhito formally welcomed the president to japan. afterwards, mr. biden met with japanese prime minister fumio kishida. the two reaffirmed their alliance in the face of threats from china and russia.

>> the united states remains fully committed to japanese -- japan's defense, and we will face the challenges today and the future together. >> reporter: president biden is unveiling a new trade agreement today. the indo-pacific economic framework. >> the purpose is to increase our cooperation with other nations in the region and deliver concrete benefits for the people of the indo-pacific region. >> reporter: the white house hotr we spip -- transpacific partnership. the tpp was negotiated under president obama. president trump withdrew after taking officers in 2017. >> the alliance between japan and the united states has grown stronger, deeper, more capable. >> reporter: details of the new trade deal are being finalized, but administration officials say it will increase trade while helping u.s. businesses and workers compete globally. and to avoid issues with china, taiwan was specifically left out

of this new pact. but white house officials say they want to deepen the direct partnership with taiwan on things like semiconductor supplies. anne-marie? >> bradley blackburn, thank you so much. a scathing report says leaders of the southern baptist convention, the largest protestant denomination in the u.s., ignored survivors of clergy sex abuse for almost two decades. it follows an investigation by an independent firm. it says that people who reported abuse were met with resistance and hostility from the southern baptist convention's administrative arm. grieved to the core for the victims. the report called for an independent commission to oversee long-term reforms concerning sexual abuse and misconduct. and an offender information system to alert people about known offenders and a comprehensive resource toolbox to include protocols, training, and practical information. what is being called a

presumptive case of rare monkeypox is being investigated in south florida. health officials in broward county say the patient is in isolation, and the case appears to be related to international travel. the world health organization says that there's been at least 92 confirmed cases in 12 countries including two in the u.s. one in massachusetts and the other in new york city. there are also another 50 suspected cases. yesterday president biden was asked about the virus. >> it is something that everybody should be concerned about. we're working on it hard, figure out what we do and what vaccine if any may be available for it. it is a concern in the sense that if it were to spread, it's consequential. >> monkeypox which is rarely seen outside africa, originates in wild animals and sometimes jumps to people. it is spread through direct contact. people usually recover within a month, but monkeypox is sometimes deadly. tage in u.s.

s abouit on esda en the head of the fda is scheduled to testify for a second time. meantime, the ceo of abbott whose manufacturing plant shut down in february wrote an op-ed in "the washington post" saying "we're sorry to every family we've let down." yesterday the first plane with baby formula arrived in the u.s. to help with the shortage. as elise preston explains, more supply is expected in the coming days. >> reporter: the u.s. military cargo plane carrying 78,000 pounds of desperately needed baby formula landed in indianapolis. sunday's operation fly formula flight from germany was the first of several expected from europe this week. the c-17 brought in 132 pallets of nestle brand specialty formula. >> it is a large shipment of very specific and specialized formula. formula for moms and dads who have children who have allergies, where the regular formula just simply will not work.

>> reporter: the white house is scrambling to reliefss the u.s ggli to find fla nation's largest domestic formula manufacturing plant was shut down in february after a whistleblower raised safety concerns. federal officials say abbott nutrition's michigan facility may resume operations in the coming days, but it will take about two months before product is ready for delivery. at least four babies have been hospitalized in south carolina because of complications related to the shortage. >> these planes that are landing now are going to provide incremental relief. we'll keep working on it. >> reporter: in an effort to prevent price gouging, new york city mayor eric adams declared a state of emergency on sunday. elise preston, cbs news, new york. the president of poland became the first foreign leader to address ukraine's parliament since the russian invasion.

to implant a pacemaker and defibrillator. fetterman says he's feeling great. a dramatic cliff rescue was caught on video, and officials are tallying the damage from a rare tornado in northern michigan. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports residents in gaylord, michigan, are dealing with the aftermath of a tornado that left two people dead. friday's tornado packed winds of 140 miles per hour, also injured 44 people. the two people killed were discovered in a mobile home park that was heavily damaged. the tornado also tore through other homes and businesses in the city about 230 miles northwest of detroit. >> chance to come and survey some of the damage and the debris that's happened to a really wide area. this storm went a lot of places and did a lot of damages. hit a lot of homes. the commercial corridor. >> authorities say nearly all the power has been restored to

the area. "the baltimore sun" says 15 people were hospitalized after a mega bus overturned on i-95 in maryland. 47 people were on the bus when it drove off the road and overturned yesterday near the baltimore suburb of kingsville. no other vehicles were involved. the mega bus says that the driver was one of the people taken to the hospital. the crash is being investigated by state police. and cbs san francisco says a california highway patrol helicopter conducted a dramatic cliff rescue captured on video. a fisherman called 911 last thursday to report a man clinging to a vertical cliff wall about 500 feet above the pacific ocean. in strong winds, the officer was lowered down to the trapped man from the helicopter. the man was placed in a rescue harness and airlifted to safety. it's not known how he got stranded on the cliff, though. up next, a london landmark is ready for its big reveal. we'll show you big ben's new

crisis. elise preston has those stories and more in the cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: investors are bracing themselves for another uncertain week on wall street. the nasdaq fell 33, and the s&p 500 gained less than a point. russia is accused of blocking ukraine from exporting 22 million tons of food products. during an international meeting, volodymyr zelenskyy warned a food crisis could be looming as food prices are already high around the world. zelenskyy is asking for international aid in unblocking ukrainian ports. grain, barley, and sunflower are among the war-torn nation's biggest exports. a salmonella outbreak has prompted a jif peanut butter recall. according to the cdc, 14 people have fallen ill in 12 states. two cases were serious enough to require hospitalization. the recall includes several varieties of jif peanut butter,

monster dunk last night. they beat the dallas mavericks 109-100. the warriors will go for the sweep tomorrow night in dallas. no team has rallied from 3-0 down to win an nba playoff series. golfer justin thomas pulled off a dramatic rally to win the pga championship for the second time in his career. [ cheers ] >> it's justin time again at the pga championship. >> he won a three-hole playoff to capture the trophy yesterday. he was seven shots behind the leader heading into the final round. thomas got a shout out from tiger woods on twitter he said, "big congrats to justin thomas. he kept himself in this championship until the very end, and once he got his shot he didn't look back." woods pulled out on saturday after shooting a career worst nine over 79. it's the first time he withdrew from a major tournament. he did not say whether he would compete at the u.s. open next

month. and ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy has made his mark on the world with his leadership, his courage, and apparently his jacket. the ukrainian company that makes the olive green fleece jacket he wears says it has received requests from around the world. so much so, the jacket is out of stock. the company says that it won't produce any more right now because it's making clothing for the military. it hopes to restock after the war. and a legendary guitar from the grunge era fetched a huge price at auction. kurt cobain's blue 1969 life handed fender mustang electric guitar sold for more than $4.5 million. it was purchased by the collection of indianapolis. cobain played the guitar in the 1991 video for "smells like teen spirit." proceeds will will go to an initiative to to raise awareness about mental health. coming up, we'll meet a pennsylvania go who was

[ chants ] >> reporter: more than a dozen high-level defendants who are accused of racing to washington on january 6th, 2021, are now racing to get away from the nation's capital. from a pennsylvania woman accused of directing the mob to the california man who allegedly used chemical spray on police to the series of accused oathkeepers charged with seditious conspiracy. a growing number of defendants have formally requested a change of venue to move their criminal cases out of the d.c. federal courthouse which sits within sights of the capitol. >> people feel differently around the country as they do here. >> reporter: a cbs news review of thousands of pages of court filings shows they're making largely the same argument that the prospective jurors in d.c. are too biassed to hear the case. because of intense media coverage, political leanings, and they argue d.c. jurors are

uniquely victimized by january 6th because of the enhanced security and the fencing in the district, and from close connections to federal workers. outside court, a defendant from new mexico told us others should consider moving their cases. >> if i was anywhere except washington, d.c., i would say go with a jury trial. >> reporter: the justice department, legal analysts, and judges have strongly disagreed saying media coverage of january 6th is everywhere and that cases need not be moved. a judge says he'll consider the request from the accused oathkeepers who argued that because the first four january 6 defendants defaced juries were convicted on all counts, jurors are just stacked against them. isn't that a song of a strong -- a sign of a strong case? >> well, the judge alluded that that could be a possibility. the attorney that was arguing for the change of venue august,ed it was because the people in the district feel more personally touched by the case. >> reporter: a ruling could impact many cases to come. of the nearly 800 criminal defendants in the capitol attack, about two-thirds of them
