arrive back in washington tonight after his first visit to asia since taking office. mr. biden took part in a four-nation summit in tokyo overnight, with the leaders of japan, australia, and india. he urged them to make a greate fort to stopsi aggression after its invasion of ukraine. he also sought to clarify comments that he made about what the u.s. would do if china attacked taiwan. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest on all of this. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. in many ways, this asia trip was about countering rising chinese influence in the region, but in those comments, the president took direct aim at a sore spot for china. now, he's trying to roll it back. >> the policy has not changed at all. >> reporter: president biden says the policy of strategic ambiguity toward supporting taiwan remains, one day after he muddied the waters when asked about a hypothetical invasion by china. >> are you willing to get involved militarily to defend taiwan if it comes to that?

>> yes. >> reporter: in tokyo, meeting with the so-called quad, mr. biden hoped to build support with the heads of australia, japan, and india to counter china's rising influence. >> democracies versus autocracies. >> reporter: the president highlighted the global response against russia for its invasion of ukraine and said he expects >> we're navigating a dark hour in our shared history. the russian brutal and unprovoked war against ukraine has triggered a humanitarian catastrophe. >> reporter: yun sun, the director of the china program at the washington thinktank the stimpson center. she says the u.s. can support taiwan as it does ukraine without putting booti s on the ground. >> no one can imagine a scenario where china attacks taiwan unprovoked, and the sus u.s. stands aside and does not intervene. >> reporter: a top chinese spokesman urged the u.s. to, quote, refrain from sending the wrong signals to taiwan

independence separatist forces. while president biden met with the asian leaders, china is pursuing its own agenda in the region, sending their foreign minister to the soloman islands. there are questions about whether they might allow a chinese naval base very close to australia and new zealand. anne-marie. >> bradley blackburn in new york, thank you so much. ofol todanot races are held in texas, georgia, tennessee, alabama, arkansas, and minnesota. in georgia, voters will decide on nominees for governor, senate, and secretary of state. there's a lot of attention on the gop race for governor. incumbent brian kemp has the support of former vice president mike pence. his biggest challenger, david perdue, has the backing of former president trump. the winner will likely face stay stacey abrams, running unopposed for the democratic nomination. president biden is warning americans to be careful as health officials look into possible monkeypox cases in the

u.s. so far, cdc says one case has been confirmed in massachusetts. other suspected cases are being investigated in new york, florida, and utah. dr. jon lapook has more. >> reporter: monkeypox infections are popping up around the world. the greatest number of confirmed cases are in spain, portugal, and the united kingdom. so far, there have been at least 92 confirmed cases in 12 countries and no reported deaths. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: the biden administration is preparing to deploy vaccines and antiviral medications if needed to combat the spread in the u.s. >> i think people should be careful. i think we do have enough to deal with the likelihood of a problem. >> reporter: monkeypox is a virus found in wild animals like rodents and monkeys. when it infects people, symptoms include fever, headache, aches and pains, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that lasts two to four weeks. until now, it's rarely been seen outside of central and west

africa. dr. anne rimoin of epidemiology at the ucla fielding school of public health says the infection can be deadly, especially in areas with poor access to health care. however -- >> we've never seen a death from the monkeypox imported from west africa in any person in a high-resource setting. >> reporter: the virus is spread through body fluids, skin, and respiratory droplets. the world health organization said many infected identify as gay and bisexual men, but emphasized anyone can develop and spread monkeypox. >> the transmission is happening from close physical contact, skin-to-skin contact. so it is quite different than covid in that sense. >> reporter: unlike covid, monkeypox is caused by a virus we've known about for more than 60 years. we have vaccines, treatments, and decades of experience taking care of infected patients. still, public health officials are being careful to say, we have a lot to learn about this unusual outbreak. dr. jon lapook, cbs news, new york.

millions of kids younger than 5 in the u.s. could start receiving covid vaccine shots next month. pfizer says its three-dose vaccine is 80% effective in preventing symptomatic infections in children as young as 6 months. the fda, which is already studying moderna's vaccine for kids, will meet next month to review the data. it comes as the number of infected children is rising. the american academy of pediatrics says as of last week, more than 107,000 additional child covid cases were reported. that's about a 72% increase from just two weeks ago. it's the sixth straight weekly increase. new york city police are asking for the public's help in finding a man who shot and killed a passenger on a subway train. investigators released pictures of the unidentified suspect who allegedly shot a 48-year-old man on his way to brunch. witnesses say the gunman shot the victim at close range without provocation. >> it is unimaginable. you're sitting down, going to

brunch, going to visit a family member. a person walks up to you and shoots you for no reason. not a dispute, which is horrific to do it when it is a dispute, but that is the worst nightmare. >> last month, another man opened fire inside a new york subway train, wounding ten people. the pentagon says more nations are sending high-tech weapons to ukraine. defense secretary lloyd austin said 20 nations will send new packages of security assistance to help the country defend itself against russian attacks. u.s. officials also say discussions are under way on whether to send american troops back to ukraine in non-combat roles. meanwhile, a ukrainian court sentenced a 21-year-old russian soldier to life in prison for killing an unarmed civilian. the tank commander had pleaded guilty. he said that he was ordered to shoot the man to stop him from reporting the russians' location. it was the first war crimes trial since russia invaded ukraine. coming up, extreme sandstorms.

pittsburgh steelers quarterback dwayne haskins drank heavily at a club before he was hit and killed by a dump truck walking on a florida highway. his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit for driving when he was killed. the 24-year-old ran out of fuel near ft. lauderdale. he told a companion he was going to find a gas station. the truck driver told investigators that haskins stepped in front of him. the "associated press" reports sandstorms engulfed the middle east. iran, iraq, syria, and kuwait were blanketed with dust and grit yesterday. the sky turned orange, and visibility was severely limited in some places. it is the tenth sandstorm to hit iraq in the last two months, making it difficult to breathe and sending people to the hospitals. kuwait international airport suspended all flights for the second time this month. and our minneapolis station, wcco, says an 84-year-old woman completed her dream of earning a college degree from the

s&p 500 up 72. starbucks is the latest company to pull its business out of russia due to the war in ukraine. the seattle-based coffee giant has about 130 stores and 2,000 employees in russia. the workers will be paid for six months, and starbucks says it will help them find new jobs. she said there's no place like home, and, for now, dorothy's "wizard of oz" dress also does not have a home. the blue and white outfit judy garland wore in 1939 was set to be part of a hollywood memorabilia auction today in los angeles. the dress was put up to sale by catholic university of america. but the relative of a late university worker filed a lawsuit after her uncle was given the dress in 1973. the auctioneer said the dress could go more than $1 million before the judge granted the preliminary injunction. arby's, best known for roast beef, will sell a burger for the first time. the steakhouse burger will be
