good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. once again the nation is in mourning for the victims of a senseless mass shooting. this time at least 19 children and two adults were killed. more than a dozen were treated for injuries, and it happened at robb elementary school in uvalde, texas, 80 miles west of san antonio. authorities identified the gunman as 18-year-old salvador ramos. he was shot and killed by an officer. an investigation is under way to determine a motive. hours after the shooting, a somber president biden addressed the nation and implored congress to pass new gun restrictions. danya bacchus is in uvalde with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. the investigation continues here this morning. uvalde is a small, close-knit community, and it seems everyone here has been impacted by this tragedy. heartbreak for another american

town. this time it's uvalde, texas, where a gunman killed at least 19 children and two adults. hearses arrived at robb elementary school tuesday evening to take the bodies away. >> i'm looking for my daughter. >> reporter: jesse rodriguez waited for hours to find out if his 10-year-old daughter was alive. tragically, she was one of the victims. some parents gave dna samples to help investigators identify bodies. law enforcement sources tell cbs news the 18-year-old shooter drove up to the school with a handgun, an ar-15 assault weapon, and high-capacity magazines. >> as soon as he made entry to the school he started shooting, children, teachers, whoever's in his way. he was shooting everybody. >> reporter: the gunman was eventually shot and killed by a responding officer. >> at this point the investigation is leading to tell us that the suspect did act alone during this heinous crime. >> reporter: the school shooting comes two days before the kids were set to start their summer break.

>> in this second, third, fourth graders -- >> reporter: mourning those who lost their life, president biden called on lawmakers to take action to prevent future shootings. >> when in god's name we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done. >> reporter: the attack comes just ten days after a racially motivated mass shooting at a buffalo supermarket and nearly a decade after the shooting at sandy hook elementary in newtown, connecticut. and the heartbreak will continue to grow here as we learn more about the victims, and of course as families start to release the pictures of the young victims here in this situation. we've been told that the school district has canceled classes and graduation, and they plan to provide support for grieving families. anne-marie? >> danya bacchus in texas, thank you very much. reaction from across the nation is pouring in. most notably among lawmakers on how to stop gun violence in america. the mass shooting is pitting

some republicans and democrats against each other yet again on a possible solution. skyler henry reports. >> reporter: president biden said it's time for america to act. >> as a nation we have to ask when in god's name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? when in god's name we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done -- >> reporter: vice president kamala harris -- >> i would normally say in a moment like this we would all say naturally that our heart break, but our hearts keep getting broken. enough is enough. >> reporter: senator chris murphy represents newtown, connecticut. the scene of the 2012 sandy hook shooting that killed 20 first graders and six teachers. he's imploring his congressional colleagues to find compromise on meaningful gun-control legislation. >> i'm here on this floor to beg, to literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues -- find a path

forward here. work with us to find a way to pass laws that make this less likely. >> it is truly horrific. there's nothing more evil than violent criminals who target children. >> reporter: senator ted cruz of texas denounced the shooting. he's suggesting schools post armed law enforcement on their campuses. >> you see democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. that doesn't work. it's not effective. it doesn't prevent crime. >> reporter: cruz is u urging t arrest and prosecution of felons and fugitives when they try to illegally purchase firearms. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. hours after the shooting, the senate took initial steps to place several gun-control measures on its calendar. that includes a house-passed resolution on background checks. flags at the white house have also been lowered to half staff to honor the victims.

they'll remain at half staff until saturday evening. and there's also outrage coming from the sports world. golden state warrior coach steve kerr addressed the shooting before last night's nba playoff game in dallas. >> now we have children murdered at school. when are we going to do something? i'm tired. i'm so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. i'm so tired of the the -- excuse me, i'm sorry. i'm tired of the moments of silence. enough. >> kerr urged lawmakers to take action saying the nation cannot become numb to these types of tragedies. before the game started, there was a moment of silence at the american airlines center. the texas elementary school shooting took place just a day after the fbi released a report on the rise of active shooter incidents in the u.s.

those incidents increased 52% from 2020 to 2021. last year there were 61 shootings in 30 states, 103 people were killed, and another 140 wounded. the fbi defines an active shooter as someone killing or attempting to kill people in a public place. our coverage of the mass shooting in texas will continue on "cbs mornings." we're going to talk to senator chris murphy who delivered that emotional plea on the senate floor last night. our other breaking story this morning -- results from the primary elections in five states. some of the races posed a test to former president trump's influence over the gop. in one of the most closely watched races, cbs news projects incumbent brian kemp, the winner of the republican nomination for governor of georgia. trump campaigned against kemp after he rejected trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in that state. kemp's opponent in november will be stacey abrams who ran unopposed for the democratic

nomination. it's a rematch of 2018. cbs news projects former football star herschel walker to win the republican nomination for senate in georgia. cbs news also projects incumbent senator rafael warnock is projected to win the democratic nomination. cbs news is projecting incumbent brad raffensperger the winner of the republican nomination for georgia secretary of state. he was also one of trump's top targets after refusing trump's pleas to overturn the 2020 election results. in other races, cbs news projects incumbent ken paxton the winner of the republican nomination for texas attorney general in a runoff against george p. bush. cbs news also projects former trump white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders the winner of governor in arkansas. cbs news projects incumbent congresswoman marjorie taylor greene the winner of her primary in georgia. so coming up, assassination plot.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports the fbi says an ohio man plotted a trip to texas to kill former president george w. bush. investigators say the iraqi man living in ohio wanted to kill bush as part of an isis inspired plan it retaliate for the u.s. invasion of iraq. he also allegedly planned to smuggle four iraqi operative the -- operatives into the u.s. from mexico to help in the plot. >> they were going to choose to come across the mexican border because that was the easier way to get access to our country. we've got to deal with this issue. >> the government says the suspect accompanied by an fbi informant traveled to bush's home in dallas last november to record videos of the entrance gate. and "the new york times" says north korea launched three ballistic missiles into the sea including a suspected icbm according to south korea. the 17th round of missile tests this year came hours after president biden wrapped up his

there could be up to 21 named storms according to the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. it would be the seventh straight year with an above-average number of storms. hurricane season runs from june 1st to november 30th. and google is rolling out a new camera for its street view. and is it a cookie or a cracker? and oreo and ritz have teamed up for a unique snack. here's matt pieper with the cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: a mixed day on wall street, though stocks did give up more ground on tuesday. the dow gained 48. the nasdaq lost 270. the s&p 500 down 32. not great news for lyft. the ride-share company is cutting hiring and trimming budgets. it comes as its stock nears an all-time low, tumbling some 61% this year. the company says as of now no employee layoffs are planned and says it would grant special stock options to eligible workers. it was earlier this month when rival uber said it, too, would

scale back on hiring. happy birthday to google's street view which came out 15 years ago. to celebrate, it's introducing a new street view camera which will be able to take photos in more remote places like islands and mountaintops. the new cameras are much smaller than the older ones which means it can connect to other types of vehicles with a roof rack. the company says there are now more than 220 billion street view images in more than 100 countries and territories. oreo has come up with yet another flavor. it's actually just the combination of an oreo cookie and ritz for peanut butter flavored cream and the oreo cookie cream. both are owned by the same company. that's your "money watch" report, i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. >> not sure about that combination. but i might just try it. mackenzie scott is making good on giving away most of her fortune.

she just donated more than $122 million to the charity big brothers big sisters of america. the youth organization says the money will go toward more staff, resources, and training to help more young people. scott, who divorced jeff bezos in 2019, has already given away about $12 billion to more than 1,200 organizations. author margaret atwood is taking a stand against censorship. her book "the handmaid's tale" is one of the most burned and banned in the u.s. atwood is literally fighting back. this is her take -- she's taking a flame thrower to a fireproof version of "the handmaid's tale" called the unburnable book. it's made of fire resistant paper and fire retardant cover. the book is being auctioned by sotheby's and proceeds will go to a group that advocates for free expression. up next, the fate of the pro bowl. details on why the nfl could sack the annual all-star games. .

sobriety following pain management for foot surgery. as a result, aerosmith is canceling the first two months of performances for its las vegas residency which was set to start in june. shows are due to resume in september. nfl owners are meeting this week, and one of the topics on the agenda is the future of the pro bowl. the league says that it's considering eliminating the exhibition game from the week-long pro bowl celebrations. in recent years there have been heightened concern about injuries. >> i've spoken to several players myself. i think the conclusion was that the game itself doesn't work, and that we needed to find a different way to celebrate our players. >> the nfl says it's exploring other events. the decision could be made this summer. and britain's royal mint unveiled the largest coin it has ever made. the 33-pound gold coin roughly the size of a dinner plate was commissioned by a private collector to mark the queen's jubilee. it's worth nearly $19,000, and

our top stories this morning -- a mass shooting at an elementary school in uvalde, texas, killed at least 19 children and two adults. more than a dozen others were treated for injuries. the 18-year-old gunman was shot and killed by a responding officer. an investigation is under way to determine a motive. and hours after the shooting, a somber president biden addressed the nation calling the victims beautiful, innocent children. he called for new gun restrictions and asked when we're going to stand up to the gun lobby. it's been three montinand yesterday a cbs news crew came dangerously close to the fighting. here's imtiaz tyab. >> reporter: it's only a handful of farm houses and fields, but russia has been targeting this

a russian drone is circling above. it's now or never. we sprint to a nearby root cellar that ukrainian forces have been using for weeks. the shell strikes are now just 50 yards away. with us is oxsana. is this normal for this area? "by any measure, this is not normal," she says.
