good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. once again the nation is in mourning for the victims of a senseless mass shooting. this time at least 19 children and two adults were killed. more than a dozen were treated for injuries, and it happened at robb elementary school in uvalde, texas, 80 miles west of san antonio. authorities identified the gunman as 18-year-old salvador ramos. he was shot and killed by an officer. an investigation is under way to determine a motive. hours after the shooting, a somber president biden addressed the nation and implored congress to pass new gun restrictions. danya bacchus is in uvalde with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. the investigation continues here this morning. uvalde is a small, close-knit community, and it seems everyone here has been impacted by this tragedy. heartbreak for another american

town. this time it's uvalde, texas, where a gunman killed at least 19 children and two adults. hearses arrived at robb elementary school tuesday evening to take the bodies away. >> i'm looking for my daughter. >> reporter: jesse rodriguez waited for hours to find out if his 10-year-old daughter was alive. tragically, she was one of the victims. some parents gave dna samples to help investigators identify bodies. law enforcement sources tell cbs news the 18-year-old shooter drove up to the school with a handgun, an ar-15 assault weapon, and high-capacity magazines. >> as soon as he made entry to the school he started shooting, children, teachers, whoever's in his way. he was shooting everybody. >> reporter: the gunman was eventually shot and killed by a responding officer. >> at this point the investigation is leading to tell us that the suspect did act alone during this heinous crime. >> reporter: the school shooting comes two days before the kids were set to start their summer break.

>> in this second, third, fourth graders -- >> reporter: mourning those who lost their life, president biden called on lawmakers to take action to prevent future shootings. >> when in god's name we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done. >> reporter: the attack comes just ten days after a racially motivated mass shooting at a buffalo supermarket and nearly a decade after the shooting at sandy hook elementary in newtown, connecticut. and the heartbreak will continue to grow here as we learn more about the victims, and of course as families start to release the pictures of the young victims here in this situation. we've been told that the school district has canceled classes and graduation, and they plan to provide support for grieving families. anne-marie? >> danya bacchus in texas, thank you very much. reaction from across the nation is pouring in. most notably among lawmakers on how to stop gun violence in america. the mass shooting is pitting

some republicans and democrats against each other yet again on a possible solution. skyler henry reports. >> reporter: president biden said it's time for america to act. >> as a nation we have to ask when in god's name are we going to stand up to the gun lobby? when in god's name we do what we all know in our gut needs to be done -- >> reporter: vice president kamala harris -- >> i would normally say in a moment like this we would all say naturally that our heart break, but our hearts keep getting broken. enough is enough. >> reporter: senator chris murphy represents newtown, connecticut. the scene of the 2012 sandy hook shooting that killed 20 first graders and six teachers. he's imploring his congressional colleagues to find compromise on meaningful gun-control legislation. >> i'm here on this floor to beg, to literally get down on my hands and knees and beg my colleagues -- find a path

forward here. work with us to find a way to pass laws that make this less likely. >> it is truly horrific. there's nothing more evil than violent criminals who target children. >> reporter: senator ted cruz of texas denounced the shooting. he's suggesting schools post armed law enforcement on their campuses. >> you see democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. that doesn't work. it's not effective. it doesn't prevent crime. >> reporter: cruz is u urging t arrest and prosecution of felons and fugitives when they try to illegally purchase firearms. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. hours after the shooting, the senate took initial steps to place several gun-control measures on its calendar. that includes a house-passed resolution on background checks. flags at the white house have also been lowered to half staff to honor the victims.

they'll remain at half staff until saturday evening. and there's also outrage coming from the sports world. golden state warrior coach steve kerr addressed the shooting before last night's nba playoff game in dallas. >> now we have children murdered at school. when are we going to do something? i'm tired. i'm so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. i'm so tired of the the -- excuse me, i'm sorry. i'm tired of the moments of silence. enough. >> kerr urged lawmakers to take action saying the nation cannot become numb to these types of tragedies. before the game started, there was a moment of silence at the american airlines center. the texas elementary school shooting took place just a day after the fbi released a report on the rise of active shooter incidents in the u.s.

those incidents increased 52% from 2020 to 2021. last year there were 61 shootings in 30 states, 103 people were killed, and another 140 wounded. the fbi defines an active shooter as someone killing or attempting to kill people in a public place. our coverage of the mass shooting in texas will continue on "cbs mornings." we're going to talk to senator chris murphy who delivered that emotional plea on the senate floor last night. our other breaking story this morning -- results from the primary elections in five states. some of the races posed a test to former president trump's influence over the gop. in one of the most closely watched races, cbs news projects incumbent brian kemp, the winner of the republican nomination for governor of georgia. trump campaigned against kemp after he rejected trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in that state. kemp's opponent in november will be stacey abrams who ran unopposed for the democratic

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports the fbi says an ohio man plotted a trip to texas to kill former president george w. bush. investigators say the iraqi man living in ohio wanted to kill bush as part of an isis inspired plan it retaliate for the u.s. invasion of iraq. he also allegedly planned to smuggle four iraqi operative the -- operatives into the u.s. from mexico to help in the plot. >> they were going to choose to come across the mexican border because that was the easier way to get access to our country. we've got to deal with this issue. >> the government says the suspect accompanied by an fbi informant traveled to bush's home in dallas last november to record videos of the entrance gate. and "the new york times" says north korea launched three ballistic missiles into the sea including a suspected icbm according to south korea. the 17th round of missile tests this year came hours after president biden wrapped up his

a russian drone is circling above. it's now or never. we sprint to a nearby root cellar that ukrainian forces have been using for weeks. the shell strikes are now just 50 yards away. with us is oxsana. is this normal for this area?
