tuesday's mass shooting at a texas elementary school that left 19 children and two ac fresh dls h r surfaced showing desperate parents outside the school pleading with officers to go in and confront the 18-year-old shooter. we are now learning that he barricaded himself inside a fourth grade classroom for more than an hour before a u.s. border patrol tactical team shot and killed him. danya bacchus is in uvalde, texas, with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. on top of the grief being felt here in uvalde, texas, there's now anger and growing criticism over law enforcement's response to the shooting. this as we're hearing more from survivors about the moments of terror inside the classroom with the shooter. today should have been the first day of summer break for the 19 children and two teachers of robb elementary killed by a gunman tuesday. >> she was excited for the summer. >> reporter: the family of layla

salazar is instead planning her funeral and they have lingering questions about the police response on that horrific day. >> maybe they could have acted faster. as the days go by we get more and more information. >> reporter: officials have struggled to clearly lay out the shooter'ovemen and what actions were taken by law enforcement in the 90 minutes he was at the school. >> the initial officers they received gunfire, they don't make entry initially because of the gunfire they're receiving. but we have officers calling for additional resources. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say the gunman walked into the building through an unlocked door without being confronted by anyone. cbs news has learned it took an hour before an elite border patrol team entered the classroom and killed the shooter. >> he crouched a little bit and he says it's time to die. >> reporter: this 9-year-old boy hid from the gunman under a covered table waiting silently for help. >> the cop said help if you need help. one of the persons in my class said help. the guy overheard and he came in

and shot her. and then the cops barged in into that classroom and the guy shot the cops and the cops just started shooting. >> reporter: for one family the tragedy has only gotten worse. the husband ofgaho w kille tues. the family says joe garcia died of a broken heart. they leave behind four children. of course, just the lingering toll of devastation here in uvalde. president biden and the first lady will be visiting this community on sunday. we're told they plan to meet with families of the victims. anne-marie. >> danya bacchus in uvalde, texas, thank you so much. friends and family are sharing stories about the shooting victims. we learned that one of the victims, josé flores, wanted to be a police officer when he grew up. uziyah garcia just started learning how to play football

and 10-year-old alithia ramirez loved playing soccer with her friends. meghan markle made a surprise visit yesterday. the duchess of sussex placed flours at a makeshift memorial. a spokesperson said she took the trip in a personal capacity to offer her condolences and support. across the country thousands of students walked out of their classrooms demanding lawmakers take action on gun violence as skyler henry reports a bipartisan group of senators is working together on the issue. >> reporter: lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree they never want to see another tragedy like what happened in uvalde, texas, this week. >> i'm not interested in the same old tired talking points. i'm actually interested in what we can do to make the terrible events that occurred in uvalde less likely in the future. >> reporter: but lawmakers can't seem to agree on how to prevent another tragedy. four republicans joined five democrats for a working lunch thursday to see if they can find middle ground on gun safety legislation before they left town for a memorial day break.

>> is it possible there's something that happens in the middle of june when you guys get back? >> i think it's not only possible it's necessary that we work every day, literally every day when we are out of session because when we're back in session right away we need to take votes. >> reporter: hundreds protested outside the capitol thursday demanding they quickly vote on new safety laws. >> my main focus is to get a vote on record, figure out who needs to get out in november. >> reporter: erica lafferty's mother was the principal of sandy hook elementary. she says her heart broke all over again when she saw video of uvalde families waiting to find out if their children were okay. >> i know how it is to be in that room and waiting and to finally get the news that you are not one of the lucky ones. >> reporter: but texas senator ted cruz says democrats are trying to politicize the tragedy. >> what democrats and the press try to do in the wake of every -- every mass shooting is

they try to demonize law abiding gun owners. >> reporter: cruz is scheduled to speak friday when the nra kicks off its national convention in houston just hours away from the shooting. skyler henry, cbs news, capitol hill. texas governor greg abbott is scheduled to hold a news conference about the shooting today. he was supposed to attend the opening of the nra convention, but his office says that he will deliver a prerecorded address instead. some performers who were scheduled to appear are pulling out in the wake of the texas school shooting. american pie singer don mclean said it would be hurtful and disrespectful to perform. larry gatlin also pulled out. the mayor of houston said the city is obligated to host the event. >> we just don't have that luxury or that option just to cancel a convention that has been on the books for two years where we are contractually obligated, where plans and -- have already been made.

you just can't cancel that convention. >> former president trump and other leading republicans are scheduled to speak at the convention. if you are one of the millions of americans getting away this memorial day weekend it will be busy and expensive. travel is expected to be back to pre pandemic levels. aaa says more than 39 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home. almost 35 million will hit the road. another 3 million are expected to fly. drivers will see record high gas prices. aaa says the average cost for a gallon of regular gas is $4.60. >> this may be the low point for the summer in what could become certainly a very expensive summer to fill your tank. >> it sucks, but, i mean, what am i going to do, just not go anywhere? >> gas and the motel and stuff, we just figured we'll wait. >> experts say you might be able to save money by filling up about a mile or so away from the highway where prices tend to be

lower. and we are remembering two losses in the entertainment world. actor ray liotta died yesterday in his hotel room in the dominican republic where he was shooting a movie. the cause of death is not known. liotta played mobster henry hill in "goodfellas" and shoeless joe jackson in "field of dreams." he was 67 years old. and andy fletcher founding member of depeche mode died. he played kae boards for the british pop band since 1980. the hits include "just can't get enough," "people are people." he reportedly died from natural causes and andy fletcher was 60 years old. coming up, new monkeypox cases. the latest states where the virus has been detected. and later ellen signs off. a list entertainers join ellen degeneres in the finale of her talk show. this is the "cbs morning news."

closing arguments are set to begin today in the libel trial brought by actor johnny depp against his ex-wife amber heard. yesterday heard testified that depp has waged a harassment campaign against her. she said it's left her humiliated and scared for her life from death threats. depp is suing heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote in the "washington post" claiming that she was a survivor of domestic abuse. he claims the article, which did not name him, damaged his career. the number of cases of monkeypox in the u.s. is growing. the cdc says that there are ten confirmed or presumptive cases in eight states. researchers in the uk are investigating a possible treatment for monkeypox. they annualized data from seven cases in the last few years and found one patient responded to an antiviral pill that treats smallpox. >> it appears to stop the monkeypox virus exiting human cells. the virus infects a human cell

but then it can't get back out of the cell and can't infect more cells, can't spread further through the body. >> more than 20 countries where monkeypox is not endemic have reported outbreaks. most are in europe. new york state appeals court ruled that former president trump, his son donnelly jr. and his daughter ivanka must answer questions under oath. it's part of the state's civil investigation into trump's business practices. the panel rejected trump's arguments that he should not have to testify because it could be used in a parallel criminal investigation. the state is looking into whether the trump organization misrepresented the value of its assets to obtain loans and tax benefits. trump has denied the allegations. and still to come, summer travel squeeze, another major u.s. airline announces it will be cutting hundreds of flights.

nasdaq up 305, the s&p 500 taking in 79. a twitter stwat. twitter shareholders filed a lawsuit accusing elon musk of pushing down its stock price in order to either give himself an escape hatch from his $44 billion buyout bid or room to negotiate a discount. musk offered last month to buy twitter for that huge price but later said the deal cannot go forward until the company provides information about how many bots there are. the lawsuit seeks to award shareholders any damages allowed by law. delta will be offering fewer summertime flights. the airline says it's cutting about 100 flights a day in july and august to prevent major summer travel disruptions. it comes as rivals jetblue and alaska airlines also recently announced cuts to summer flights due to surging demand and staffing challenges. as for delta, it says it will be in contact with those whose flights are affected by these summer changes.

the country have taken matters into their own hands to protect students and staff. scott macfarlane explains. >> reporter: a week already marked by tragedy continues with investigations of new alleged threats foiled against schools in maryland and ohio. with congress paralyzed over new gun control laws some schools have stopped waiting. the superintendent of millville, new jersey, has been installing cameras, panic alarms and locks. >> we had to put time and energy into the human behavior of making sure the school is secure for our kids and for our staff. >> reporter: cbs news has learned u.s. schools have spent 150 million federal dollars since 2018 for school hardening including in logan county, west virginia. >> we have over 100 cameras inside or outside of the high school. >> reporter: even senators who have helped pursue this grant money question if it's a solution. >> we're going to build bunkers and castles for our children and does that solve this problem? >> reporter: states have expanded the use of armed school

resource officers, a trend that surged nationwide after the 2012 sandy hook tragedy. so what's the role? are they a shield for the school or are they the tool to keep kids from turning to violence? >> they have to go from officer friendly where they're greeting students when they get out of their car pool lines or when they get off of the buses in the mornings to there is an intruder in the school, i have to react now. >> reporter: but some of america's largest school districts recently removed the officers from buildings in it's calls for police reform. there may be schools that say we need to get a lot more officers really fast. you don't think that is the solution? >> absolutely not. there is an actual way in which we can do both, ensure that our kids are safe while at the same time not overblitzing and overhardening our schools. >> reporter: hundreds of u.s. school systems will apply this year for those federal school security grants but it's worth noting uvalde, texas, doubled its school security funding in recent years, it has its own
