yesterday, and we will be in the upper 70s for inland locations, and low 70s in the bay, and tomorrow is the warmest of the three-day weekend and we will look at that and the forecast for carnaval today, and, back over to you, devin. >> and for the coronavirus, governor gavin newsom has tested positive for covid-19. he is experiencing mild symptoms, and glad that he is vaccinated. he is going to quarantine until next week. he had c with the prime minister of new zealand and they posed for pictures and shook hands and pledged to fight climate change and pledged to fight gun control. there was a statement that said that the prime minister took precautions such as masking up and meeting outdoors including for her meeting with the governor. on wednesday, newsome and other democratic leaders held an indoor meeting to talk about gun reform. the governor got his second covid booster shot on may 18th.

there is a good chance that you know somebody who recently tested positive and the numbers back it up with the rising positivity rates in all of the bay area counties. so now we have a report the tell you what may happen next. >> reporter: and one doctor said it is like when cases go up, bring a mask and wear it when you go indoors. >> reporter: san francisco dropped the indoor mask mandate months ago, but this woman wears one when she is shopping at the mom and pop stores. >> it is striking a balance, and there are a lot of children and elderly people who cannot get vaccinated. >> reporter: she never threw the mask away and says it is more important as the cases are going up. >> and double boosted, and i will take tests if i travel. >> reporter: and state officials say that the subvariants have sparked a rise in case, and report that the positivity rates

are up across the bay area, an contra costa leads the way at 12.3%, and other counties are not far behind, and alameda county has the lowest percent. >> we will see an increase after this weekend, because there is so much virus around, but i don't expect hospitalizations to go up that much, because the rates of vaccination, and particularly boosting are really high in the bay area. >> reporter: triple a says that roughly 39 million people are traveling this weekend, and close to prepandemic levels and aside from the pandemic levels, dr. hong says it is best to wear a mask like you are attending a preparm event. >> it is risky that 1 in 20 people will have it even if they have no cough or any symptoms.

alert camera. the fire captain said it threateded several commercial facilities, and it did cause minor damage on a u.p.s. facility. crews are using an excavator to get to the actual fire, and they are asking people to avoid that area. in the east bay, neighbors rescued a neighbor from a house fire on oakley, and happened near sand mound boulevard, and large plumes of smoke could be seen from across the town, and neighbors used a ladder to save boats as embers were seen behind the docks and homes. and now, we sent john ramos to ember stomp. >> reporter: the fact that marin county would create a community festival over the subject of wildfire shows you how seriously they are taking it and how much a part of it is of the public

we are counting down the hours, and it is just hours at this point as carnaval returns to the mission district. this team of 200 talented dancers have been preparing non-stop for the parade, and they will be one of the largest dance groups returning this year. the presidio gave them permission to dance on the street, and for some of the dancers, it is going to be their first time to dance in the parade. >> my mom told me that you have to madden yourself like an amazonian warrior, and that is the mindset. >> i was pulling hair, and now when she hears the drums, and like, oh, yeah. you get the energy. >> reporter: the group is going to be led by the senior members, and the vets, and system of the dancers have participated in almost all of the carnavals since 1981. catch the live coverage on nbc news bay area at 10:00 a.m., and it is going to travel west at mission street and ending at 15th and harrison.

is going to be better to stay home. these are the projected numbers for the bay area airports. sfo expects to see 450,000, and oakland expects 137,000, and ma ne -- mineta down in san jose expecting 207,000. bad weather and air traffic control problems forced thousands of cancellations. according to flightware, more than 35,000 flights had to be canceled and delta with the most. the heaviest flight delays were at hartsfield-jackson airport in atlanta. >> a gorgeous start to the day, devin. we start with the camera at north sales tower here over the golden gate bridge. what a difference. yesterday, all day, that bridge was just socked in, and the marine layer was doing the may

gray thing, and today, it is all gone to start out this morning. a very different look to sunday. from what the last two days have looked like, monday is going to look a lot like this, and the last two days of the three-day weekend are going to be the prettier of the two, and they are going to be warmer, and i will show you why memorial day proper is arguably the nicest day of the whole three-day weekend, and today is no slouch. it is going to be a little breezier today, and this is going to impact carnaval, and i wanted to show you the forecast specific for that and then everybody else for that. that is a live view from the sa salesforce looking east. you can see the mid-40s up in the bay area valley, and everybody else is in the 50s. in terms of the carnaval today, it is going to be a sunny day no surprise from what we are seeing, and warming up into the

mid-60s, and it is going to be breezy, and looking at the wind speeds down there, and the first part of the day is going to be fine, and the winds will pick up. and daytime highs is going to climb up into 70s in concord and san jose and 77 is the number in santa rosa, and that going to go back to 1:00 in the morning, and this morning, and watch how fast the clouds cleared out thanks to nice northerly wind in the last few hours getting us ahead right now, and now that the clouds are gone, we will be staying clear. one overview, i wanted to give you how this is going to go in terms of the wind today, because that is one factor to keep in mind. we will pull out the microclimates here and highlighting the mission here, and to 3:00 in the afternoon, we have a 25-mile-an-hour gusts and stronger in san bruno, but later in the day, it is going to be stronger at times. it is classic onshore wind now, and not breezy today until the

early breeze picks up, and first half of carnaval is fantastic, and you could not have asked for better weather, but late afternoon and evening, it is windy out there. it is going to be that way, too, along the east bay shoreline and not as strong. that is the issue today, little breezy. now, monday, sunny and warmer, and inland, the low 80s, and we will see daytime highs here, and the warmup is in the mid- to low 80s, and there a minor issue of monday in the central valley, and a fire weather watch for solano valley, and i will talk to you in the next half hour when we visit again, but for right now, the seven-day forecast. the warmup in san jose is going to get to us near 90 by wednesday, and the rest of the climates will be low 90s for the rest of the east bay valleys and the inland west bay valleys. >> you know, i have looked and

studios, this is kpix5 news. welcome back. it is 6:30 and thank you for joining us. i'm devin fehely, and let's start with a quick check of the weather with our meteorologist darren peck. >> let's look at what we have been dealing with from the last couple of days. there are no clouds out there. and we have had a northerly wind, and it is beautiful, and that is the look from sutra camera, and looking out over the bay, and how fantastic. it is going to be much sunnier than yesterday. we are starting out in the 50s, and going for daytime highs, and it is 5 degrees warmer than we were yesterday, and the temperature in the bay is about 5 to 7 degrees warmer, and 70 in freemont, but it will be breezier, and also, what does

be filed against manufacturers for civil lawsuit, and that bill is now in the hands of the senate. and now for the latest in ukraine. the russian forces are appearing to be poised to take a chunk of ukraine called luhansk. these are the images this weekend of ukrainian fighters and russia says it is overrun by a key railway junction, and at the same time ukrainian and russian forces are engaged in hand-to-hand combat, and power is out in that area, and there is alarm as the russian forces are storming the city. and ukraine is mounting a response to the battle against

if you are looking to swim at one of the east bay regional parks this memorial day weekend, you might want to check if they are open. many of the popular swim areas like lake anzo are closed because of low water levels and cleaning out blue green algae areas that have overtaken the areas. >> there are some that are closed for various reasons. some of them for construction, and some of them are due to environmental issues. yeah, we do have some of the facilities that are open, and we are open here at diablo foothills. >> hart. starting out the forecast by focusing on the forecast for carnaval. a lot of people in the mission today, and we will start out about the specifics, and why tomorrow might be the better day to start. okay. carnival is the daytime with no

clouds which is a big part of the story, or most of the story. so it is going to be a big part of the blue sky that you have gotten used to. and the big part of the carnaval is the fine print down there, and by the later afternoon, and once we get past 2:00 or 3:00, the parade through the morning is going to be picture perfect, but if we are watching the microclimate forecast with the high resolution wind, now you will start to see the colors really brighten by the time we get into the late afternoon, and early evening, and there is the mission to spotlight, and when we get the onshore winds you will feel it. a 23-mile-an-hour wind, and looking at sam brew noh with the 24-mile-an-hour gust, and the winds will start to die down right after that. now, there is the scene with

most of yesterday with the fog having most of the city socked in. and yesterday, concord and san jose, and santa rosa warmed up. if you have just watched the last few hours, there is a southerly marine layer, and that is from 1:00 to the rest of the weekend. so why would i say that memorial day is the best day of the weekend? that image. this is going to get us back to average for inland locations for tomorrow, and it is going to be ten degrees warmer than yesterday, and five degrees warmer than today, and the mid-70s in the bay, and one minor issue with memorial day, and windy in the central valley,

a strong meteor ik showers late monday, and it could light up for the showers because the parent meteor is disintegrating. they say it could last an hour or two, and nasa expects it to peak 1:00 a.m. tuesday. speaking of space, a new research tool to search for water is getting attention here in the bay area. the astronauts unveiled the jabeau rover, and it will be spending time on the north pole to find ice down to the so where is the water?
