overnight as powerful storms and tornadoes swept through minnesota. officials say as many as 100 homes were damaged in the city of forada, about 135 miles northwest of minneapolis. drone video shows the destruction. authorities say that the city of eagle bend, about 30 miles away, was also hit. thousands of customers are still without power in the state, and there are no reports of deaths or injuries. also breaking overnight, agatha has been downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall on mexico's southern pacific coast. the category-two hurricane plowed into beach resorts and fishing towns yesterday afternoon. it packed torrential rain and had winds of 110 miles per hour. it drove tourists and residents into shelters. the national hurricane service says heavy rains over portions of southern mexico today could cause flooding and mudslides. and today marks one week since a gunman shot and killed 19 children and two teachers at a texas elementary school. the first few minutes will begin today for two of the victims.

there will be 11 funerals altogether this week alone. as the makeshift memorial grows at the scene of the shooting in uvalde, lawmakers are once again trying to find a compromise in the gun-control debate. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. this was supposed to be a week of celebration in uvalde, the start of summer break for students at robb elementary. instead, this week families and the community are processing their enormous grief as they begin to say good-bye to those 19 innocent victims. funerals will be held today for two of the victims of last week's school shooting. amerie jo garza and maite rodriguez, both just 10-years-old, were killed in their classroom one week ago. maite's cousin said the fourth grader dreamed of being a marine biologist. >> she didn't deserve it. know in that moment she was

bride. she was telling people where to hide. along -- >> reporter: president biden hopes the latest tragedies will help convince more republicans to come to the bargaining table. >> i think it's gotten so bad that everybody's getting more rational about it. at least that's my hope. >> reporter: following the 2012 school shooting at sandy hook elementary in newtown, connecticut, congress failed to pass legislation expanding background checks.

and in uvalde, funerals will continue nearly every day for the next 2.5 weeks. volunteer funeral is directors have come from across texas to help this community mourn and honor the young lives so cruelly taken. >> bradley blackburn in new york, thank you. the world health organization says the world health organization says it is not concerned about the outbreak of monkeypox around the world becoming a pandemic, but it says that there are still many unknowns about the disease. the cdc says there's been 15 confirmed cases in the u.s. so far in eight states. more than 300 suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported this month across the globe. the virus is related to smallpox which was eradicated in 1980, ending mass immunization. >> we are concerned that because the global population is not immune to the viruses since the end of smallpox eradication that the virus may attempt to exploit

a niche and spread more easily between people. >> monkeypox is spread through close contact between people. it causes flu-like symptoms and a possible rash. the european union is stepping up sanctions against russia. eu leaders reached a compromise deal to impose a partial oil embargo on moscow. it only covers russian oil transported by sea. it does not impact oil delivered by pipelines. the eu says the embargo covers two-thirds of oil imports from russia cutting a huge source of financing for its war against ukraine. meanwhilile, presidentnt biden the u.s. has no plans to send long-range missile systems to ukraine that could strike inside russia. ukraine had been asking for the longer range systems. fire swept through a popular illinois resort destroying multiple cabins there. officials say yesterday's fire at grand bear resort at starboard rock started on the porch of one of the cabins. seven cabins were destroyed.

the resort which is located about 95 miles southwest of chicago said everyone was evacuated safely. a lodge and water park were not damaged. and the nation paused on memorial day to remember americans who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. skyler henry reports on observances across the u.s. present -- >> present -- >> arms. ♪ >> reporter: president biden presided over a solemn ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier as america honored the men and women who died while serving in the u.s. military. >> today as a nation we undertake a sacred ritual to reflect and remember. >> reporter: at the world war ii memorial in washington, veterans and family members gathered to remember more than 400,000 americans who died in europe and the pacific.

injuries, though. the covid death rate in the u.s. is down, but the number of daily cases is more than five times higher than it was this time last year. meanwhile, researchers are looking into so-called covid rebound for patients who take a popular anti-viral pill. dr. jon lapook explains. >> reporter: as covid cases continue to rise, paxlovid is being prescribed to try to keep high-risk patients out of the hospital. now the cdc is warning of potential covid-19 rebound after a five-day course of the treatment. >> if you take paxlovid, you might get symptoms again. we haven't yet seen anybody who has returned with symptoms needing to the hospital. generally a milder course. >> reporter: after a patient recovers, rebound has been reported to occur two to eight days later. still, the cdc says the benefits of taking paxlovid far outweigh the risks. among unvaccinated people at high risk of severe disease it reduced the risk of hospitalization and death by
