cbs news has learned the uvalde school police chief, pete arredondo, has not responded to a followup interview with the texas rangers that was made three days ago. under his direction, as many as 19 officers remained outside the classroom for nearly an hour before a border patrol team shot and killed the gunman. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the justice department has promised an independent review of the police response at robb elementary to get to the bottom of what happened. in uvalde yesterday, the focus was also on honoring the victims as the first funerals began. amerie jo garza and maite rodriguez were laid to rest yesterday. the funerals for the 10-year-old fourth graders were the first for the 21 killed in last week's school shooting. >> i would tell them i love them, and i'm going to miss them. >> reporter: khloe torres was their classmate. she recently dyed her hair purple, amerie's favorite color.

torres remembers how teachers irma garcia and eva mireles tried to protect the students from the 18-year-old gunman. >> he said, you will die. and he shot my friend. and she shot my teacher, ms. garcia. >> reporter: irma garcia's funeral is today. she'll be buried along with her husband, joe. he died of a heart attack days after the shooting. the family says it was a broken heart. the funeral for 10-year-old jose flores is also today. jose's family described him as a happy-go-lucky kid. >> he tried everything. just a little boy like growing up. >> reporter: his 9-year-old sister was hiding in a nearby classroom and made it out safely.asies move forwardatti including why w enforcement waited to enter the classroom. the texas department of public safety says school districts police chief pete arredondo has not responded to a request from investigators for a followup

interview. as you might imagine, arredondo has declined to speak to reporters. he was elected to uvalde's city council in early may and was supposed to be sworn in yesterday in a public ceremony. instead, it was done in private. the mayor said out of respect for the families. anne-marie? >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. president biden is promising to meet with congress on the issue of guns. he made the pledge yesterday at the start of a meeting with new zealand's prime minister jacinda ardern. he praised ardern for successfully curbing domestic terrorism and guns in her country. she oversaw quick passage of new gun-control legislation after a mass shooting there killed more more than 50 people in 2019. >> in the aftermath of the new zealand public had an expectation that if we knew what the problem was that we do something about it. >> ardern said all but one of her country's 120 lawmakers voted in favor of banning military-style sutweons.

meanwhile, a bipartisan group of u.s. senators held a private virtual meeting yesterday to try and reach a compromise on gun legislation. they discussed closing loopholes in the national background check system, new red flag laws that would allow judges to take weapons from people considered dangerous, and more federal money for mental health programs and school security. ahead on "cbs mornings," we'll talk with arkansas governor asa hutchinson about the chances of a bipartisan deal on gun control. breaking overnight now, president biden says the u.s. will send high-tech medium-range missile systems to ukraine to help the country defend itself against russia. in an opinion piece in "the new york times," mr. biden said, quote, i've decided that we will provide ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in ukraine. mr. biden also said the u.s. is not encouraging or enabling ukraine to strike beyond its borders into russia.

ukraine has been pleading for advanced weapons systems to help battle russian forces from advancing in the donbas region. in the u.s., gas prices climbed once again. overnight gas prices jumped to a new record high 67 athis gas station in dow8 a gallon. natalie brand reports on white house efforts to address inflation frustrations. >> reporter: from the gas pump -- >> really ridiculous. >> reporter: -- to the airport, summer travelers cannot escape soaring inflation and higher prices. >> every time we look at the prices, they're getting higher by the day. >> reporter: president biden has made addressing inflation his top economic priority. underscored in his tuesday meeting with federal reserve chair jerome powell. >> my plan is to address inflation, starts with a simple proposition -- respect the fed. they have a laser focus on addressing inflation just like i

am. >> reporter: the fed chairman has signaled he will continue to support raising interest rates until prices fall to a stable level. the consumer price index hit 8.3% in april, while oil prices ticked up tuesday after the european union announced an embargo on most russian oil imports. in an op-ed, president biden also detailed his plan to curb inflation which includes fixing supply chains, improving infrastructure, and paying down the federal deficit. >> there isn't a pain-free way of addressing where we're at now. >> reporter: george washington university professor tara sinclair says right now economists are looking at two possible scenarios for what happens next. >> there's arguments that we might be concerned about inflation for some time to come, or that we might be facing a recession in the next six to 12 to 18 months. >> reporter: professor sinclair believes the picture will become clearer in the next few months, but the real economic impact may not be known until next year.

natalie brand, cbs news, the white house. at least 11 people are dead and 20 missing after hurricane agatha battered southern mexico. the category-two hurricane packed torrential rain and 105 mile-per-hour winds. it caused mudslides and heavy flooding that swept away homes. officials say the deaths appear to be concentrated in a small -- in small towns, rather, in the mountains near the coast. the u.s. national hurricane center says what's left of the storm is expected to bring heavy rain for several more days. and residents of china's largest city are celebrating after a two-month covid lockdown was lifted. life slowly started returning to normal in shanghai after midnight as people returned to the streets. officials said public transportation would resume along with train connections between the rest of china. residents no longer need passes to leave their homes. the lockdown was imposed during the worst wave of covid to hit the city since the start of the

attorney for hillary clinton's presidential campaign was acquitted of lying to the fbi. a federal jury found michael sussman not guilty of lying about whether he represented clinton's campaign when he passed along evidence of a possible link between russia and donald trump. the verdict is a setback for special counsel john durham who was appointed three years ago by the trump administration to look for possible wrongdoing among federal agents who investigated trump's 2016 campaign. "the seattle times" says a 9-year-old girl is recovering after she was attacked by a cougar in washington state. wildlife officials say the girl was playing hide and seek with her friends at a church camp saturday. the cougar attacked when the girl jumped out to surprise her friends. she remains hospitalized in stable condition. camp workers say they warn kids about dangerous animals when they arrive. >> we just have to be very, very careful and let all of our campers know not to go anywhere by themselves, especially at night.

a war is coming. i'm afraid your friends at hawkins are very much in the eye of the storm. >> viewers are going upside down over the new season of "stranger things." netflix announced season four of the sci-fi horror series and the biggest premiere weekend ever for an english language show on the platform with more than 286 million hours viewed. it also reached number one in 83 countries. the first batch of episodes came out last friday. the second batch drops on netflix on july 1st. president biden will get an update today on the nationwide shortage of baby formula, and taco bell's mexican pizza is gone again, at least temporarily. matt pieper has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: after the holiday weekend stocks were not so forgiving with wall street closing out the extremely turbulent month of may with yet

another down day. the dow lost 222. the nasdaq was down 49. the s&p 500 losing 26. president biden will meet with manufacturers of baby formula today. the administration has come under pressure to address the shortage which has been an issue for months now. in the virtual meeting, mr. biden's expected to discuss efforts to ramp up production and import through operation fly formula. under that, formula that meets u.s. health and safety standards is imported from overseas and delivered to hospitals and retailers in the u.s. ask anyone who's tried to get back into the states from a foreign country, and it is not easy. that's because due to a u.s. mandate, travelers must still get a covid-19 test within 24 hours of flying back here. travel and airline industry representatives just met with white house officials to repeat their request to end that requirement. they say international travel is still 14% below normal due to people nervous that they'll be

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ kpop band bts met with president biden at the white house. the boy band thank police -- thanked mr. biden for signing the covid-19 hate crimes act into law. bts joined the white house press briefing to address the surge of crimes against asian americans through a translator. >> translator: everyone has their own history, we hope today is one step forward to respecting and understanding each and every one as a valuable person. >> the live stream of the press briefing attracted more than 230,000 viewers. before the event began bts got a tour of the white house. some elvis-themed wedding chapels in las vegas are all shook up after receiving cease and desist letters.
