the u.s. in 23 states. at least four people were killed or injured in each of those incidents according to the nonprofit group gun violence archive. it comes as lawmakers from both parties try to find common ground on gun legislation. bradley blackburn is in new york with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: hi, anne-marie. officials are bracing for even more violence as the summer sets in. this weekend alone there were eight mass shootings reported in cities across the country, including on the crowded streets of philadelphia. this is the moment gunfire struck philadelphia's busy night life area killing three people and injuring close to a dozen others. witnesses say several suspects fired into a large crowd just before midnight saturday. >> everybody hit the ground. everybody started running every which way. >> reporter: police are investigating whether this fight captured on cell phone video triggered the gunfire. officers posted nearby engaged the gunman as they ran away from

the scene. >> the officer drew his weapon and fired several times in the direction of the unknown male. we believe striking him. >> reporter: and in chattanooga, tennessee, at least three people were killed in a shooting near a nightclub. more than a dozen were injured by gunfire, and three hit by vehicles trying to escape. after mass shootings at an elementary school in uvalde, texas, a supermarket in buffalo, new york, and a medical center in tulsa, oklahoma, demands for change are growing. [ chants ] on capitol hill, senate democrats and republicans say they are seeing progress in new gun legislation talks. >> it feels to me like we are closer than we've been since i've been in the senate. >> there are more republicans at the table talking about changing our gun laws and investing in mental health than at any time since sandy hook. now i've also been part of many failed negotiations in the past, so i am sober mind good our -- minded about our chances. >> reporter: negotiators say measures such as expanded background checks and funding

for mental health and school safety are on the table. and as senators try to respond to this spree of violence, they are not talking about any major gun-control proposals like an assault weapons ban. they are tempering expectations for what can get bipartisan support. they do hope to have some type of tentative agreement this week. >> all right, bradley blackburn, fingers crossed. thank you so much. it certainly seems that americans do not expect congress to make any big changes in gun policy, not in the near future, according to a new cbs news/ugov poll. 7% believe it's very likely congress will pass new gun laws. 69% say not likely or not at all likely. when asked why the u.s. has more mass shootings than the other country the top answers were availability of guns, mental health issues, the influence of violent video games and movies, and racial division. 72% said that mass shootings can

be prevented if we really tried. 29% said it's something that we have to accept as a free society. at least 50 people were killed in an attack at a catholic church in nigeria. police say that the attacker shot at people inside and outside the church yesterday during mass. explosions were also detonated. the victims included women and children. the presiding priest was also abducted, and there's no word on the identity or motive of those responsible. tropical storm alex is bearing down on bermuda this morning. the first named storm of the atlantic hurricane season reached tropical force after strengthening off florida's east coast yesterday. it dumped more than ten inches of rain and caused flooding in parts of florida including miami. the storm killed three people in cuba, flooding homes and streets in havana. a tropical storm warning is in effect for bermuda. and the house committee investigating the january 6 attack on the u.s. capitol is coming to primetime tv this week

almost a year after the select committee was created. it will make its case public with a series of hearings beginning thursday. there will be a combination of live witnesses and prerecorded interviews including those with former president trump's daughter ivanka and her husband jared kushner. >> our goal is to present the narrative of what happened in this country, how close we came to losing our democracy, what led to that violent attack on the 6th. >> cbs news will bring you coverage of the hearings thursday night. and russia is again taking aim at ukraine's capital of kyiv. for the first time in weeks, russian air strikes hit the city yesterday. smoke could be seen after witnesses reported hearing explosions. moscow claims it destroyed tanks donated to ukraine from other countries. ukraine says that the missiles hit a train repair shop. russian president vladimir putin has warned of striking new targets if the west started supplying ukraine with longer range rocket systems.

and queen elizabeth says that she is humbled by all the support she received during the platinum jubilee. the four-day celebration ended yesterday, but not before she made one last public appearance. holly williams reports from london. ♪ >> reporter: there aren't many 96-year-olds who get a pop concert staged in their honor. ♪ sweet caroline ♪ with performances by rod stewart -- ♪ -- and diana ross, this was a musical celebration of the british monarch's 70-year reign. the queen was represented by three generations of her family while she stayed at home. she's had mobility issues in recent months. she still managed to steal the show. >> tea? >> reporter: in a video she made with another icon, paddington bear -- >> perhaps you would like a marmalade sandwich.

south korea says its drill was aimed at demonstrating a swift and accurate response to north korean attacks. d-day ceremonies return this year, and when new baby formula will hit store shelves. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "detroit free press" reports abbott nutrition restarted production of baby formula at its plant in michigan. the largest formula factory in the country closed in february due to contamination. that led to the nationwide shortage of formula. abbott says that it will initially prioritize production of formulas for infants with severe food allergies and digestive problems. it will take about three weeks before formula hits shelves. and the "associated press" says world war ii veterans were honored a day before the 75th anniversary of d-day. more than 20 british veterans gathered yesterday near the pegasus bridge in northwestern france. it was one of the first sites liberated by allied forces that landed in normandy in 1944.

well, every year more than 20,000 pregnancies nationwide result in stillbirths. now a first of its kind clinic is opening up in the u.s. for women and their families who have experienced this heartbreaking tragedy. michael george reports. >> reporter: for marny smith and her husband michael, 1-year-old zosia is the light of their life. ♪ they suffered unfathomable loss on the journey to parenthood. in 2019, their son heath was stillborn at nearly 37 weeks. >> we were completely shattered, devastated. you know, it's supposed to be one of the happiest days of your life, and with the flip of a switch it turns into a nightmare. >> reporter: she says when she was pregnant with zosia, her anxiety was the biggest challenge. now the first clinic in the nation is being established to support women and their families who have experienced stillbirth. >> it really is addressing not only the medical needs of the
