calling it an attempted coup -- the house committee investigating the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol began presenting its findings to the american people. in the first of several planned public hearings, last night the select committee played never-before-seen video of the riot showing what happened before and during the siege. it also aired prerecorded testimony from trump administration officials including the former president's daughters, ivanka. she said that she agreed with the assessment of former attorney general bill barr that there was no fraud in the 2020 presidential election. skyler henry is on capitol hill with the very latest on all this. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning to you. it wasn't just ivanka. we also saw clips of testimony from her husband and white house adviser jared kushner, as well as others in the trump orbit who essentially are part of why lawmakers on this committee believe this was a coordinated effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

in addition to that, emotional and gripping testimony from witnesses who were there. >> what i saw was just a war scene. >> reporter: in its first public hearing, the january 6th house select committee presented dramatic testimony from a u.s. capitol police officer who was injured in the violent insurrection. >> there were officers on the ground, you know, they w bleeding, they were throwing up. >> reporter: the panel blamed former president trump for the events that day in 2021. during the primetime televised hearing, aired a never-before-seen 12-minute video of the deadly riot. >> on the morning of january 6th, president donald trump's intention was to remain president of the united states despite the lawful outcome of the 2020 election. >> january 6th was the culmination of an attempted coup. >> reporter: the committee of

seven democrats and two republicans presented video statements from supporters of president trump who face criminal charges in the riots' aftermath. >> i did believe that the election was being stolen, and trump asked us to come. >> reporter: the house panel showed trump administration officials including former attorney general william barr saying they didn't believe mr. trump's baseless claims of a stolen election. >> i made it clear i did not agree with the idea of saying the election was stolen and putting out this stuff which i told the president was [ bleep ]. >> reporter: several days of hearings are planned. there are two scheduled for this coming monday and wednesday. now, gop leadership came out yesterday challenging this committee's legitimacy, also announcing that they are conducting their own analysis on who was behind the january 6th attack. lawmakers on this committee noted not only the number of people involved but also said there were republican members of congress who sought pardons for their roles on that day. >> yeah, that was a very, very

interesting part of what we heard yesterday. skyler henry on capitol hill, thank you. ahead on "cbs mornings," we're going to be talking with representative adam kinzinger who is one of two republicans on the select committee. so overnight, the average price of gas in the u.s., you guessed it, inched a little closer to $5. a gallon of regular gas is $4.99 coordinating to the aaa. the 14th day in a row that the price has hit an all-time high with no end in sight. the record prices have contributed to four decade-high inflation. later this morning we're going to get another indication of how high the inflation rate is when the labor department releases the consumer price index for may. an employee is accused of opening fire at a manufacturing business in maryland killing three co-workers and critically wounding a fourth. authorities said the gunman fled yesterday and was tracked down by state police. they got into a shoot-out. the suspect and a trooper were wounded, but they hell survive.

so far the gunman's motive is unclear. jeff pegues has more. [ gunshots ] >> reporter: stunned motorists ducked for cover as gunshots rang out on this busy road as officers raced to the scene of another mass shooting. >> units immediately responded and located four victims, three of which were deceased at the scene and one who was critically injured and transported. >> shots fired! turn around! >> reporter: authorities say a gunman opened fire inside a concrete equipment company in smithsburg, maryland. >> the suspect fired and shot the state trooper in the shoulder who then returned fire and shot him back. >> reporter: columbia machine is a vancouver-based company. in a statement the company said that we are working with local authorities and are in contact with them. the safety of our employees is our number-one priority. this is the 58th mass shooting since a gunman killed ten people in a racially motivated shooting

at a supermarket in buffalo, new york, and little over two weeks since a shooter killed 21 people at an elementary school in uvalde, texas. jeff pegues, cbs news, smithsburg, maryland. there is new information about the law enforcement response to last month's shooting in uvalde. according to records obtained by "the new york times," police waited for protective equipment as they delayed entering the school. it happened even as they became aware that some victims needed medical treatment. police waited more than an hour to confront the gunman. when they went in, not all of the victims were dead, according to records. some died either on the way or at nearby hospitals. and for the second time in two days, a military aircraft has crashed in southern california. officials say a navy helicopter went down yesterday on a training range near el centro, close to the mexican border. all four crew members on board survived. one person suffered a non-life-threatening injury. on wednesday, you may recall, a marine osprey aircraft crashed in the desert during a training

mission about 40 miles away. all five marines on board were killed. the cause of that crash is under investigation. a michigan police officer is set to be arraigned today after being changed with second-degree murder. grand rapids officer christopher schurr shot and killed a 26-year-old black man, patrick lyoya, during a traffic stop in program. schurr pulled him over because his car did not match the license plate. video shows they struggled after lyoya tries to get away. it ends with him being shot in the head. yesterday lyoya's father reacted to the murder charge through an interpreter. >> i said though they may not believe 100% -- being arrested and go to jail. that's when i will be happy to see justice. >> the defense attorney said it was an unfortunate tragedy

the "detroit free press" reports a republican candidate for governor of michigan was arrested for his role in the nuary capitack 40-year-old ryan kelley was arrested during an fbi raid at his home in allendale. that's near grand rapids. he was charged with several misdemeanors including disorderly and disruptive conduct. he's one of five republicans on the august primary ballot for governor. he denies doing anything illegal. "usa today" says two people were rescued after falling into a chocolate tank at a mars wrigley factory in pennsylvania. the two people, believed to be employees, were taken to a hospital. rescue crews cut a hole in the side of the tank to get them out. it's not clear just how they fell in. the chocolate in the tank was about waist high. and the "houston chronicle" says more than 40 years after a texas couple was murdered, their missing baby was found. holly marie knowles, who's now 42, was discovered alive and well living in oklahoma. a family adopted her as a baby.
