d.c. cbs' skyler henry is there. years since thousands of peo >> reporter: it's been four years since thousands of people rallied here in washington, calling on lawmakers to keep them safe and away from gun violence in everyday places. well, today, they were back, frustrated and with the same message. >> what do we want? >> justice! we want >> when do we want it? >> now! >> reporter: emotional impassioned ralliers say now is the time for action. people from across the country gathered at the national mall for the second march for our lives, demanding gun control legislation on every level. >> somebody shot him in the back. >> reporter: corina solarzano's husband, jason cortez, was killed, his death just shy of their first wedding anniversary. what's been going through your mind seeing the level of gun violence in the country? >> um... that it's just ridiculous. >> we are being naive to think that it couldn't happen to us. >> reporter: garnell whitfield

jr. has been in washington most of this week, earlier testifying before before a senate committee. >> my mother's life mattered. >> reporter: challenging them to pass meaningful reform after his 86-year-old mother was gunned down, along with nine others at a buffalo grocery store last aty store last month. in the weeks since all of this, how are you doing?s, how are you >> we're still grieving, you know. we decided as a family to go public with our grief.ily to go public with our gri we thought that that was the best way to seek justice for our mother and the other victims of this violence. >> reporter: today in uvalde, texas, the family of 10-year-old alexandria rubio laid her to rest and there are more funerals to come after she and 18 other students and two teachers were shot and killed in their shot and killed in the classroom just over two weeksves ago, that massacre leaving other teachers across the country unsettled. >> i think of how the children must feel, the fear that they have to live through, that they don't feel safe. and it's not okay. >> diaz: skyler henry joins us now. skyler, what's the latest on this small group of bipartisan

senators trying to make a deal on background checks and red flag laws? >> reporter: adriana, they say they're making progress. we know they met virtually yesterday.gress. senator chris murphy from connecticut, who is leading the charge on passing tougher measures, says while he's for compromise he doesn't want to just check any sort of box unless it means this bill will save lives.means this bill wil senators will be back here oniv. senators will be back here on the hill on monday. >> diaz: all right, skyler henry, thank you. for the first time ever, the average price of gas nationwide has hit an unprecedented $5 a gallon. but for drivers in california, that price is still a bargain. cbs' lilia luciano is in los angeles. lilia. >> reporter: adriana, good evening. i know what you're thinking-- this here is outrageous. but gas prices are going up all across the country, and even that isn't slowing spending elsewhere. u.s. consumers are feeling the squeeze well beyond the pumps. inflation is driving costs up cp

everywhere. food prices are up 10%, energy, 34%. the president has blamed corporate greed, and today in los angeles, vladimir putin's invasion of ukraine. >> it's outrageous what the war in ukraine has cost. >> reporter: inflation is at a 40-year high. the consumer price index has risen 8.6% from a year ago. surging prics are not curbing summer getaway plans. >> there are a lot of authentic, pent-up needs. >> reporter: 80% of people in the u.s. are planning at least one summer trip, and sales of gas-guzzling rvs have jumped 14% this year. how would you describe consumers' mindsets right now? >> i think they're mixed, conflicted and questioning. so i think there's a lot of information out there that suggests that the economy is in dire straits, but then, when they look at their own lives, that's not necessarily consistent with the messages that they're hearing.

>> reporter: when do you start seeing personal confidence decline? >> it's going to be a tale of two economies. if you own a house, you have increased equity, and you're feeling like you have greater ge wealth. if you don't own, just trying to find a place to rent right now has become much more difficult. >> reporter: while this is the first time that we hit that $5 mark nationwide, this is not a record. back in 2008, gas prices went up to the equivalent of $5.40 a gallon, when you adjust for inflation. adriana. >> diaz: all right, lilia, thank you. it is a weekend of dangerous heat across big parts of the west. at least 50 million people are experiencing triple-digit temperatures. needles, california, near the arizona border hit 150 degrees. phoenix was a dry 115, and forth worth texas seared at 105. the scorching is expected to extend well into next week. today, the nation's largest wildfire in new mexico was

viy prt bidefrom air force one. the president landed in santa fe to meet with state and local officials. some new mexicans are furious with the government for allowing planned burns to spread. more than 430 homes have been lost to flames. now a rule change for all travelers entering the united states. it takes effect midnight sunday. cbs' michael george is at newark airport with the details. michael. >> reporter: adriana, good evening. starting at evening. starting at midnight, americans and international travelers won't need a negative test to get back into the u.s. it comes as the summer travel season is in full swing with a lot of americans ready to fly again. starting sunday, americans who travel out of the country won't risk being stranded if they test positive for covid. >> we've come a long way with the pandemic now. and that will ease the flow of people, you know, in and out of the states. >> reporter: cbs news medical contributor dr. david agus says the decision by the biden administration is appropriate. is this the right time to ease

back on those testing requirements? >> yeah, when you look at the data, the testing requirements aren't doing much. this is the right decision to do. >> reporter: also, late friday, the f.d.a. announced moderna's vaccine is safe and effective for children under 6. a vote is expected next week on whether to grant emergency use authorization for both pfizer and moderna's children's vaccines. >> they're both remarkably effective. with the pfizer vaccine you have literally billions of patients experience, hundreds of millions of young individuals. >> reporter: now, non-citizens will still have to show proof of vaccination to entertain u.s. all this comes as new infections are near record highs in much of the country. adriana. >> diaz: all right, thanks so >> diaz: all right, thanks so much, michael george. now to the battle for ukraine. fighting raged in the east today with new warnings ukraine is out-gunned and desperately in need of fast deliveries of arms from the west. ukraine's government says it can

respond with only one artillery round to every 10 fired by russia. and in mariupol, this new video of mass graves. officials say as many as 20,000 people are buried there. the united states has committed roughly $54 billion in aid to ukraine since russia's invasion. that includes stockpiles of american weapons. but as cbs' david martin reports, figuring out how to use them is a whole other matter. >> reporter: army veteran mark hayward volunteered for frontline duty with the ukrainians and witnessed firsthand their courage in facing down russian tanks withh javelin antitank missiles. >> everybody i know who got a shot, got a kill on an armored vehicle, took significantnificat amounts of personal risk to gett there. >> reporter: but he came back frustrated by what he sees as the achille's heels of the biden administration's efforts to arm ukraine. >> the supply system is not working. if you can't get the tools that you need to make the stuff you have more effective. >> reporter: hayward and the

ukrainians he was advising outside kherson suffered from a crippling shortage of batteries needed to operate the javelins. >> only one battery for the launch unit had been shipped, and that battery will only run the launcher for about four hours, and it will only let you launch two to four missiles. >> reporter: without spare batteries, the ukrainians couldn't even train with the javelins, much less fight. hayward, a former special forces medic, had to come up with a new workaround-around. did you know how to use the javelin? >> not when it went in country, sir. >> reporter: but you had to teach them. >> we taught ouraselves. >> reporter: this sounds like a pretty fly-by-night operation. >> it had a strong air of "we're making this up as we go along." >> reporter: here's what hayward nd his battle buddies made up. >> this shell gave us the connector we needed to route power from the motorcycle batteries to the javelin launcher. >> reporter: so that's what you were using as your power source, motorcycle batteries.

stunning downfall catapulted survivors into the spotlight. today, a former titan of the fashion industry is facing similar accusations. for decadesm gerald marie was one of the most powerful men in the world of modeling. now, two of his accusers are sharing their story with cbs' ae sharing their holly williams. and a warning to viewers, some details may be disturbing. >> i started in new york city, and then i went to milan, which is sort of tra is sort of trajectory that a lot of models go through. and then my milanese agent said why don't you try paris. >> reporter: in the 1980s, laurie marsden was a top model living in europe when she arrived in paris, at age 19, her agent was gerald marie, at the time one of the most powerful men in the modeling industry. marsden claims marie told her she'd be a star, but then she sh says, at a house party, he attacked her. >> he jumped on top of me, and he had my pinned down, and he-- he tried to rape me. i finally got out from under

him, and then i fled. >> reporter: were you clear, this was an attempted rape? >> there is no question that he was there for sex. and the fact that he wasn't stopping and the fact that the he was pulling my clothes off, there came a moment where i said to myself, "you are going to be raped." >> reporter: mars den says she didn't go to the police because she thought she wouldn't be taken seriously. gerald marie has never been charged with a crime. but we're reporting on it now because mars den and 14 other women have gone to the french authorities with allegations of sexual assault against marie. "we are easily attacked," he said in 1999 when asked about9 o some of the accusations. in an email to us, his lawyer says marie firmly objects to the defamatory and false allegations made against him, and is withholding his statements for the justice system. in 1998, lisa brinkworth was an undercover journalist working on

a documentary about the abuse of young models and posing as a model herself when she says she encountered gerald marie at a nightclub with other modeling executives. >> gerald marie was next to me, and he was becoming very, very insistent that we would sleep together, and then all of a sudden, without any warning, he straddled me and pinned me to the back of my chair, and this went on for some time. i was absolutely terrified i was going to be raped. and i was shouting out, "no, no." and then eventually, he got off me. >> reporter: brinkworth says she made this video account immediately afterwards, obtained by "60 minutes australia." but she says she was prevented from going to the authorities because it could have impacted the documentary. we went to paris, the world's fashion capital, where gerald marie once sat at the pinnacle of the modeling business, to meet anne-claire le jeune, a
