former vice president mike pence during the capitol riot. during its third public hearing yesterday, the house committee investigating the attack showed photos of pence taking shelter in an underground safe room at the capitol. a mob chanting "hang mike pence" came within 40 feet of him. he also -- we also learned more about the pressure president trump and his aides placed on pence to overturn the results of the 2020 election. debra alfarone is in washington with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. and the committee says that they knew that former president trump's lawyer, john eastman, actually knew that this plan to pressure former vp mike pence to single handedly reject what the electors wanted was illegal. still, they say, that trump pressured pence. he called him names, he tweeted about him, and he put his life in danger. testimony yesterday in the

january 6th hearing indicated president trump was told by several close aides and vice president mike pence that not certifying joe biden's white house victory was illegal and unconstitutional. but witnesses told the house select committee investigating the january 6th insurrection that president trump and his advisers continued to put intense pressure on pence to carry out his wishes. >> there is no justifiable basis to conclude that the vice president has that kind of authority. >> reporter: a white house counsel testified that he told john eastman, a lawyer for president trump, that overturning joe biden's victory would spark outrage. >> you're going to cause riots in the streets. >> reporter: during the riots aimed at stopping the vote certification, a mob came within 40 feet of where pence and others had been evacuated. the panel's timeline showed that even during the attack that endangered pence's life, mr. trump tweeted that his vp lacked courage. photos that the house select

committee shows for the first time captured pence taking shelter in an underground safe room. >> he was determined that we would complete the work that we had set out to do that day. >> reporter: in another development, the committee sent a written request to interview supreme court justice clarence thomas' wife ginni. she exchanged messages with eastman in the days leading up to january 6th. and back to eastman. after january 6, it turns out that the committee says eastman had asked for a pardon, a pardon he did not get. anne-marie? >> very interesting. debra alfarone in washington. thank you very much. breaking overnight, two people were killed and a third person wounded after a shooting at an alabama church. it happened last night at an episcopal church near birmingham. police say a lone gunman entered the church as a small group of people were meeting and began firing.

authorities say officers rushed to the scene, and the suspect was taken into custody. there's no word on a motive. the state department is looking into whether a third american has gone missing in ukraine. the families of two other u.s. veterans possibly captured by russia are desperate for information on their whereabouts. chris livesay reports from ukraine. >> reporter: they had just gotten engaged -- >> we decided to get engaged so we can get married when he comes back. >> reporter: now joy black doesn't know when or if that will happen. the whereabouts of her fiance, 27-year-old andy hunyh, along with 39-year-old alex drueke are still unknown. their families say hunyh did humanitarian work with church o fit, buth drueke ai ended up on the front line. >> i hope we can get answers and find out where they are and get them home. that's all i want is andy back. >> reporter: both men from

alabama were fighting with a unit of foreign volunteers when something went wrong. their fellow soldiers called drueke's mom bonnie to tell her the news. >> all but two of the people had made it back, and alex and andy were the two that had not reported in yet. >> reporter: the kremlin has not confirmed their capture, but russian state media wasted no time discussing their punishment. based on the precedent there will be a death sentence, presenter asked this lawmaker. yes, there are no other options. an unthinkable fate for alex's mom. >> i'm not worried about him being in the russian hands, not because of russia but because i know is alex's character. he is brave. he is tough. he is well trained. there's part of him that's going, yes, i can do this. >> reporter: the timing and circumstances are ominous for the americans who went missing here in the kharkiv region. just last week a russian-backed

separatist court sentenced a moroccan and two british p.o.w.s to death for fighting alongside ukrainians. chris livesay, cbs news, kharkiv, ukraine. president biden says the american people are, quote, really, really down after the last two years. in an interview with the "associated press," mr. biden pointed to the pandemic, the ups and downs of the economy, and surging gas prices that are hitting families hard. the president also talked about the possibility of a recession. he said, quote, first of all, it's not inevitable. secondly, we're in a stronger position than any nation in the world to overcome this inflation. if it's my fault, why is it the case in every other major industrial country in the world that inflation is higher? you ask yourself that. i'm not being a wise guy. [ applause ] [ bell ] on wall street, though, stocks tumbled sharply again yesterday. the dow lost 741 points, falling

below 30,000 for the first time since january of last year. the nasdaq was down 453 points, and the s&p 500 shed 123 points. one market analyst said that the recent downturn has erased nearly $3 trillion from u.s. retirement accounts since the end of 2021. and mortgage rates have surged to their highest level since 2008. freddie mac reports that the 30-year rate climb to 5.78% this week, that's likely to keep going up, too, as the federal reserve continues raising interest rates to fight inflation. well, some good news -- the golden state warriors are back in familiar territory as nba champions. they won their seventh title defeating the celtics 103-90 in game six of the finals. it's the warriors' fourth championship in the last eight seasons. steph curry was asked what it was like to be named the series mvp for the first time in his career.

says that he left the state last week on a long scheduled personal trip with his wife before the flooding hit. a bill to help veterans exposed to toxic fumes has crossed a major hurdle, and why a covid vaccine for young children may be delayed in florida. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the tampa bay times" reports florida governor ron desantis defended his decision not to preorder covid vaccine for kids under 5. florida's the only state that has not preordered vaccines for young children in anticipation of final approval from federal health regulators. desantis says the risks outweigh the benefits, but it will be available to parents who want it for their kids. >> doctors can get it, hospitals can get it. but there's not going to be any state programs that are going to be trying to get covid jabs to infants and toddlers and newborns. that's not something that we think is appropriate. >> the white house says the availability of shots for kids in florida could be delayed

without preorders. and "politico" says that the senate overwhelmingly approved a bill to provide enhanced medical and disability benefits to millions of veterans suffering from health issues linked to toxic burn pits. the u.s. military used jet fuel to burn tires, batteries, medical waste, and other materials in open burn pits for years in iraq and afghanistan. it estimates more than three million veterans were exposed to the toxic fumes. president biden urged the house to approve the measure quickly so he can sign it. and the "associated press" says the leaders of four european nations expressed their support for ukraine in a meeting with president volodymer zelenskyy in kyiv. the heads of france, germany, italy, and romania vowed to back ukraine's efforts to join the european union. they also pledged more weapons to help ukraine defend itself in the war with russia. france, germany, and italy have all faced criticism for failing to give ukraine the weapons it's asked for. still to come, a jolly green roadside attraction.
