staff mark meadows, cassidy hutchinson, spoke before the committee about the alleged actions of former president trump before and on january 6th. she claimed trump knew the crowd outside the capitol was armed with weapons and even wanted to do away with metal detectors so that larger crowds could get in. naomi ruchim has more on the testimony. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. white house aide cassidy hutchinson also testified about former president trump lashing out as he tried to join the crowd on it its way to the capitol. she also said mr. trump did nothing to stop the attack despite threats to hang the vice president. in dramatic testimony, former white house aide cassidy hutchinson described an alleged altercation in the presidential limo on january 6th as told to her by another white house staffer. she says president trump's chief secret service agent, bobby engle, refused to bring him to the u.s. capitol just after he directed a crowd of his supporters there.

>> the president reached up toward the front of the vehicle to grab at the steering wheel. mr. engle grabbed his arm, said, "sir, you need to take your hand off the steering wheel." mr. trump used his free hand to lunge toward bobby engle. >> reporter: the committee played videotaped testimony when she recalled a conversation with her boss, trump white house chief of staff mark meadows. >> they were getting close. have you talked to the president? he said, he wants to be alone right now. >> reporter: she testified that white house counsel pat cipollone approached meadows about trying to stop the violence. >> i remember pat saying something to the effect of "mark, we need to do something more. they're literally calling for the vice president to be effing hung." and mark had responded something to the effect of, "you heard it, pat, he thinks mike deserves it." >> reporter: hutchinson said she understood that president trump knew his supporters were armed but that he wanted the metal

detectors removed because they would reduce the size of his white house ellipse crowd. >> i overheard the president say something to the effect of, you know, i don't effing care that they have weapons. they're not here to hurt me. take the effing bags away. >> reporter: former president trump responded saying hutchinson was giving a fake story, and that he hardly knew her. in regards to the testimony about mr. trump's behavior inside the presidential limo on january 6th, a source close to the secret service confirmed to cbs news that the agent and the driver are prepared to testify under oath that neither man was physically attacked or assaulted by the former president, and that he never lunged for the steering wheel. the secret service released an official statement saying it does intend to respond to hutchinson's testimony. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you very much. >> reporter: thank you. the biden administration is ramping up efforts to fight the outbreak of monkeypox here in the u.s. the white house announced plans to distribute almost 300,000 doses of the only fda-approved monkeypox vaccine in the coming weeks.

56,000 doses will be sent out immediately. more than 300 cases of the virus in the u.s. have been identified. the cdc says that it is mobilizing additional personnel and activating its emergency operations center to respond to the outbreak. and now to the covid vaccine. fda advisors voted to jet -- to recommend booster shots to better fight the latest variants. they say some version of omicron should be part of a fall booster campaign in order to fight an expected surge in cases. advisers said that the recommendation does not mean everyone would get a tweaked booster. it's up to the fda to decide what's in the boosters. it's 20 years in prison for ghislaine maxwell for her role in jeffrey epstein's sex trafficking ring. trinity chavez was at the courthouse in new york city and has more on how maxwell's victims reacted to the sentence. >> reporter: sapphires survivors

arrived t and talk about her her abuse impacted them. >> just to have my voice and for her to hear what i have to say is -- is liberating. >> reporter: tuesday a judge sentenced the former british socialite to 20 years in prison for helping her longtime confidante jeffrey epstein abuse girls as young as 14. among them, annie farmer who told the court maxwell at one point fondled her breasts at epstein's ranch. >> they were perpetrators who used that power and privilege to harm countless individuals. >> reporter: the victims urged the court to consider their ongoing suffering and maxwell's crucial role in the trafficking ring. >> today showed us that individuals can be held accountable irrespective of power and privilege. >> reporter: maxwell said she empathized with the victims and adding that epstein fooled all of those in his orbit. >> her statement seemed like a hollow apology. she did not take responsibility

for the crimes she committed. >> reporter: her attorneys said the 60-year-old only became a target when epstein died by suicide while awaiting trial in 2019. >> she has been incredibly strong to endure the daily vilification and mistreatment. >> reporter: maxwell's team had asked she serve roughly five years in prison. trinity chavez, cbs news, new york. be sure to tune in to "cbs mornings." we will speak with annie farmer, one of the survivors who testified against maxwell. that's ahead on "cbs mornings." the death toll has risen in connection with that horrific incident in san antonio where dozens of migrants were found dead in a tractor-trailer. omar villafranca is in san antonio with a look at how tragedies like this are too familiar along the southern border. i believe we're going to need more medics. so far i have about -- one, two, three, probably about six or seven more patients that i can see.

>> reporter: a horrifying scene for first responders. >> okay. i believe we have two or three more bodies in the truck for back boards. >> reporter: an abandoned 18 wheeler filled with migrants in san antonio's triple-digit heat. >> very sad to report that we -- the medical examiner's office has 51 bodies. 12 women. >> reporter: initially 16 survived and were taken to area hospitals. five later died, including children. >> the patients that we saw were hot to the touch. they were suffering from heatstroke, heat exhaustion, no signs of water in the vehicle. >> reporter: the chaotic scene is a familiar one on the u.s./mexico border. human traffickers are known to use trucks and trailers to smuggle people into south texas. over the years, officials have discovered stash houses filled with migrants waiting to board trailers to their destination. the journey is dangerous and oftentimes deadly.

two people are now facing weapons charges as mayor ron nirenberg is demanding a full investigation. >> these were inhumane conditions, and we want the people who are responsible for that to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. and the death toll from monday's amtrak derailment in missouri has climbed to four people. the train traveling from los angeles to chicago slammed into a dump truck on the tracks. three people on the train died along with the truck driver. about 150 people were hurt. officials say residents and local leaders have been pushing for a safety upgrade at the railroad crossing for nearly three years. and overseas it looks like sweden and finland are set to join nato after turkey lifted its opposition to the move. the deal was announced yesterday during the nato leaders summit in madrid. the two nordic nations applied to join the alliance after russia invaded ukraine. the agreement paves the way for

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." our detroit station wwj reports the michigan supreme court ruled the indictments in the flint water scandal are invalid. the court said a judge had no authority to issue indictments against former governor rick snyder, his health director, and seven others. snyder had been charged with two misdemeanor counts of willful neglect of duty in connection to lead contaminants infiltrating the water system in 2014 and 21st. -- and 2015. others were charged with manslaughter for nine deaths regulared to legionnaires disease. "the washington post" says iran and the u.s. began talks about reviving the nuclear deal. the top negotiator met with eu and qatari officials in doha who are meeting with u.s. representatives. iran and other countries agreed to a nuclear deal in 2015 but then-president trump withdrew the u.s. from the agreement in 2018. since then, iran has been increasing its stockpile of

enriched uranium. the "associated press" says carbon monoxide poisoning killed three american tourists at a bahamas resort, according to local police. a couple from tennessee and a man from florida were found dead in adjacent villas in the same building last month that the sandals emerald bay resort. the florida man's wife was found alive and was taken to the hospital. her condition is not known. it is not clear if the villas had carbon monoxide detectors. still to come, closing the door on party houses. why airbnb is putting a permanent ban on disruptive parties in its rentals.

according to the new schiller price index. home prices up 20% in april from the same time last year, down a touch from the month before if you're selling a home in tampa, miami, and phoenix, good news. those cities saw the highest home price increases. a major recall for nissan pathfinder owners. they're being recalled from the years 2013 through 2016. the problem -- the hood could potentially fly loose and block the driver's view. nissan says the issue can be caused by dust and dirt collected on the latch. it's working on a remedy, and owners are expected to be notified next month. and planning a party? just don't plan on airbnb. the company is making its temporary ban on booking properties for events or party houses permanent. the original ban went into effect in 2020 as a measure amid the pandemic. those found breaking the rule and throwing a party could face a suspension or removal from the platform. this is your cbs "money watch" report for this wednesday

it's not the titanic, but a norwegian cruise line ship struck an iceberg in alaska. the norwegian sun hit what's known as the growler or piece of ice broken off from a larger one saturday. the cruise line says the damage is minor but it is canceling the rest of the voyage to inspect the ship. no one was hurt. britney spears' ex-husband who showed up uninvited at her wedding, will stand trial for stalking. a judge ruled jason alexander must answer to that charge along with other counts of trespassing and vandalism. he crashed spears' june 9th wedding by getting into her california home where her ceremony was being held. alexander has pled not guilty. and quarterback deshaun watson's disciplinary hearing continues today. 24 women have accused watson of sexual misconduct in lawsuits. he reached settlements with 20. the "associated press" says
