connected tv. i'm matt pieper c bs news new it's thursday, june 30th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." supreme court shakeup. on the final day of this session, one longtime justice is stepping down, and another is stepping in. how u.s. ipreparing plmili ass roped ruia's w and r. kelly sentenced. once one of the biggest music stars in the world, the singer learns his fate for sexually abusing young girls. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it will be a historic day for the u.s. supreme court. 83-year-old justice stephen breyer is set to retire at noon today after 28 years on the court.

taking his place will be federal judge ketanji brown jackson who will be sworn in. she will become the first black female justice. naomi ruchim has more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. chief justice john roberts will administer the constitutional oath at today's ceremony. justice breyer will administer the oath for ketanji brown jackson as she once served as his law clerk. after last week's stunning reversal of roe versus wade, the supreme court is making history again today. ketanji brown jackson, a federal judge since 2013, will be sworn in as the first black woman to serve as a justice on the t n r,'s highest court. a lifetime, for me to have this chance to join the court, to promote the rule of law at the highest level, and to do my part to carry our shared project of

democracy and equal justice under law forward. >> reporter: jackson got emotional while reflecting on her journey back in april after being confirmed. >> in my family, it took just one generation to go from segregation to the supreme court of the united states. [ applause ] >> reporter: she takes the seat of 83-year-old justice stephen breyer who is officially retiring after serving on the court for nearly 28 years. president biden nominated jackson in february, fulfilling his vow to choose a black woman to fill the vacancy. >> she understands the broader impact of her decisions, whether it's cases addressing the rights of workers or government service. she cares about making sure that democracy works for the american people. >> reporter: jackson joins three female justices, sonia sotomayor, elena kagan, and amy coney barrett, marking the first time four women sit on the niem over the summer, jackson will have time to prepare for about

two dozen cases the supreme court plans to begin hearing in october. this will not change the balance of the court which has six conservative justices and three liberals. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you so much. >> reporter: thank you. meanwhile, fallout from the supreme court's decision to overturn roe versus wade continues. states are still scrambling to figure out just what comes next and how their laws will be applied. omar villafranca has the details. ♪ >> reporter: protesters prayed outside of a planned parenthood clinic in broward county, florida. on friday the state's 15-week ban on abortion is set to go into effect, but several groups are challenging the law. >> abortion in florida is legal right now. in fact, the health centers with planned parenthood are really busy. >> reporter: last week's supreme court ruling leaves a patchwork of state laws that has created confusion on where women can go for an abortion, and many are going to florida. >> if you look at the map, i

mean, florida really is the last oasis of health care, of access to reproductive health care in the south and abortion. >> reporter: several states had trigger laws in place in case roe was overturned, and many have now effectively banned abortion or severely restricted them. in three states, some providers have stopped offering abortion care due to uncertainty. [ chants ] another battle on the abortion front, enforcement. in austin, texas, travis county district attorney jose garza says he thinks law enforcement can use discretion in prosecuting. >> my number-one job is to keep our community safe. and not prosecuting women, families who seek abortion care, not prosecuting doctors and medical staff who provide abortion care. >> reporter: in wisconsin where there is a legal fight over an 1849 law that criminalizes abortion, sheboygan county' da

joel urmanski says the choice is clear. >> i'm not trying to be some activist prosecutor. my job is to enforce the law as it was written. >> that was omar villafranca reporting. overnight the house committee investigating the january 6th capitol attack has issued a subpoena for former trump white house counsel pat cipollone. he was interviewed by the committee behind closed doors in april, but lawmakers say he has resisted talking further. on tuesday, a former white house aide testified that shortly after rioters broke into the capitol, cipollone demanded a meeting with trump and warned that something needed to be done or people were going to die. nato looks ready to expand as it has formally invited sweden and finland to join its alliance. it comes as the u.s. is boosting its military presence in europe in response to russia's war in ukraine. nancy cordes has the details. i think it's a history-making summit -- >> reporter: a new show of force from president biden and other nato leaders as the war in ukraine moves into its fifth month.

the president announcing that he's deploying more military might to nine european countries including two new navy destroyers to spain, two f-35 squadrons to the uk, and an additional combat brigade to romania. national security council spokesman john kirby -- >> we want to send a clear message to putin that we're going to defend every inch of nato territory. >> reporter: russia threatened to responds with compensatory measures warning "we have the capabilities and resources." speaking remotely, ukraine's president warned the leaders gathered here that even with foreign aid he is still vastly outgunned. >> the ukrainian armed forces are struggling -- >> reporter: igor zhovkva is volodymer zelenskyy's deputy chief of staff. he traveled to madrid because his boss can't. what kind of weaponry is ukraine seeking that you aren't getting now? >> well, we are getting almost all the pieces of weapon we want, but not in enough quantity.

>> reporter: the leaders here say they're bracing for a long-term conflict. boris johnson, the embattled uk prime minister, called the invasion a prime example of toxic masculinity. >> if putin was a woman, which he obviously isn't, but if he were, i really don't think he would have embarked on a crazy macho war of invasion and violence in the way that he has. >> that was nancy cordes. he was once one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and now r. kelly has learned how long he will spend behind bars for sexually abusing young women. elise preston has more on that. >> reporter: disgraced r&b singer r. kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for using his celebrity to sexually abuse young fans. >> with the aid of his fame, his money, and most importantly his inner circle, r. kelly preyed upon children and young women for his own sexual gratification

for decades. >> reporter: the 55-year-old was found guilty of racketeering and sex trafficking last year. on wednesday, kelly showed no reaction when the punishment was handed down in a new york courtroom. >> 30 years did he do this, and 30 years is what he got. >> reporter: kelly's victims expressed relief that justice was finally served. >> i never thought that i would be here to see him be held accountable for the atrocious things that he did to children. >> reporter: in 2008 kelly was acquitted on child pornography charges. but a year later, lifetime released "surviving r. kelly" which documented allegations of sexual abuse. he denied the accusations in an interview with cbs' gayle king. >> i didn't do this stuff. this is not me. i'm fighting if -- fighting for my [ bleep ] life. you are all killing me with this [ bleep ].i uld ge30 yrs - >> robert?

>> reporter: his attorneys argued for a ten-year sentence because he had faced childhood traumas. >> obviously he's devastated. 30 years in prison is like a life sentence. >> reporter: kelly plans to appeal the conviction. elise preston, cbs news, new york. the death toll has risen to 53 in what is now the deadliest human smuggling incident in the u.s. -- on the u.s./mexico border. the migrants had been inside a tractor-trailer when they were discovered in san antonio monday. four people have been charged with federal crimes including the alleged driver of the truck. authorities say the texas man initially tried to pass himself off as a victim before he was arrested. he and another man face human smuggling charges that carry a possible death penalty. firefighters in northern california are battling a fast-moving sierra-nevada wildfire that's threatening several small rural communities. the rices fire has grown to more than 900 acres and is only 10% contained. authorities say it has destroyed at least one structure and is endangering hundreds more along

general is conducting a civil investigation into whether the trump organization misrepresented the value of his assets to obtain loans and tax benefits. in april, the judge declared trump in contempt for not meeting a deadline to turn over documents. the judge now says that trump has done what's needed to lift the contempt order. trump has denied the allegations. "reuters" says indirect talks between the u.s. and iran about reviving the nuclear deal ended without progress. on tuesday the european union began holding separate negotiations between the two countries in qatar. iran refused to meet directly with the u.s. iran and other countries agreed to a nuclear deal in 2015, but then president trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018. espn says quarterback d deshaun watson's nfl disciplinary hearing begins today. they finished a second day of meetings yesterday.

and things could be even more difficult if you're traveling by air amid pilot and staffing shortages. flight aware says that there were more than 600 u.s. flights canceled yesterday alone, and more than 5,000 were delayed. there are big layoffs at tesla, and spotify wants to hear you sing. matt pieper has those stories and more in the cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks ended mostly lower on wall street wednesday keeping the market on track for its fourth monthly loss this year. while the dow gained 82 points, the nasdaq lost three, s&p 500 losing two. tesla has laid off nearly 200 workers. they were hourly autopilot employees who were helping train the company's artificial intelligence. tesla ceo elon musk said earlier this month that he plans to lay off 10% of his salaried white-collar staff. he's been cutting costs after admitting that tesla's new factories have been money furnaces amid ongoing supply chain issues. bring cash if you're
