anne-marie green. we begin with the fight over abortion rights in america. big battles are brewing in two states after courts in florida and kentucky blocked state laws which ban or restrict abortion. it comes as protesters continue to march in the streets across the country, including in front of justice amy coney barrett's home in virginia yesterday. dan lieberman has more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, elise. turmoil over the supreme court's ruling doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon both on the state and federal level. president biden is under pressure to take action with a meeting with state governors planned for today. roe v. wade may be history after the supreme court reversed the 1973 ruling last week, but the battle over abortion rights is heating up nationwide. ♪ >> reporter: outside the high court, places like indiana --

[ chants ] >> reporter: -- and in south dakota -- >> even though the supreme court made the decision, we the people are standing up for what we want. >> reporter: today president biden plans to meet with governors of states where abortion remains legal. >> i'm going to be talking to the governors as to what actions they think i should be taking, as well. >> reporter: in a news conference at the end of the nato summit in madrid, the president also said he would support changing senate rules to codify abortion rights across the country. >> and if the filibuster gets in the way, it's like voting rights, it should be -- we provide an exception. >> reporter: changing those rules would pave the way for an abortion rights bill to pass the senate with 51 rather than 60 votes. on thursday a florida judge said he'll block a 15-week ban on abortions in the sunshine state. >> it will be a statewide temporary injunction. >> reporter: the judge's ruling is set to take effect today when florida's abortion ban becomes

law which could cause confusion for patients and abortion providers. a similar situation in kentucky, too, where a judge temporarily blocked his state's near-total ban on abortions. that lets the procedures resume after they stopped when the supreme court overturned roe versus wade last friday. elise? >> dan lieberman in new york. thank you. meanwhile, history was made yesterday at the supreme court as the first black woman ever to serve on the high court was sworn in. natalie brand has a look at the historic moment. i, ketanji brown jackson, do solemnly swear -- >> reporter: a ceremony that makes history as justice ketanji brown jackson becomes the first black woman to sit on the nation's highest court. >> so help me god. >> reporter: her official swearing-in comes as justice stephen breyer retires following the current term's close nearly three months since her senate confirmation. >> in my family, it took just e generation to go from

[ applause ] >> reporter: while justice jackson will not change the ideological make-up of the 6-3 conservative-leaning court, dean of howard university school of law danielle holley-walker says she will have a significant impact with her background and ri a mother, and former federal problem defender. >> i think just justice jackson will be similar to other justices who have been labeled as kind of the conscience of the supreme court. when i say the conscience of the court, i mean someone who really talks about the every day person. >> reporter: justice jackson steps into the role after a highly contentious term that's divided justices on issues including abortion, climate change, and religion. >> this term has been probably one of the most heavily controversial politicized terms ever in the history of the court. and we can expect more of that to come. >> i am pleased to welcome

justice jackson to the court and to our common calling. >> reporter: in its next term, the court is expected to decide on more contentious issues including voting rights, lgbtq rights, and affirmative action. natalie brand, cbs news, the supreme court. the supreme court also handed out a decision limiting the environmental protection agency's authority to fight climate change. yesterday a 6-3 ruling curbed the agency's ability to regulate carbon emissions from power plants. it means the epa cannot force states to move away from coal to clean energy sources. now the court also cut back other areas of the agency's authority making it more difficult to regulate climate policy. there's been yet another deadly incident in texas involving suspected human smuggling near the southern border. it comes as we're learning more about a san antonio incident that left 53 migrants dead. omar villafranca has the details. >> reporter: four people are

dead and three critically injured after a vehicle carrying migrants across the u.s./mexico border crashed into a parked tractor-trailer in encinal, texas. >> the suspect being pursued by border patrol exited the interstate at a high rate of speed, lost control, and crashed into the stationary vehicle. >> reporter: the driver and two migrants on board were taken to area hospital in critical condition. this comes after 53 migrants died after being found earlier this week trapped inside a hot tractor-trailer in san antonio. four people are charged in connection with their deaths including the driver of the truck, homero zamorano, a u.s. immigration checkpoint this week. authorities say he was hiding in the bushes, pretending to be one of the surviving migrants. communities in central america are grieving. in honduras, karen caballero's two sons as well as her 24-year-old daughter-in-law margie tamara are among the

dead. "we all planned it as a family so they could have a different life and achieve goals and dreams." also among the dead, a 14-year-old and his 13-year-old cousin from guatemala. he had hoped to make enough money in the u.s. to buy his mother a house. archbishop gustavo garcia siller has met with survivors in hospitals. most unable to talk. >> they're coming from situations of great injustice. >> reporter: they're fleeing. >> they are fleeing. and they have hope. >> that was omar villafranca reporting. wnba star brittney griner is set to go on trial today in russia on drug-smuggling charges. fery rusan ors claid theynds sc vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. she faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.

her chances of acquittal are slim as russian prosecutors have a 99% success rate. breaking overnight, rescue crews in ukraine are searching for survivors after russian missiles hit several buildings near the black sea port of odesa. ukrainian officials say at least 18 people were killed and dozens hurt in strikes on an apartment building and a resort facility. some people were buried under the rubble. the attack came shortly after russian forces withdrew from a strategic island in the black sea. back home, for those of you who haven't yet reached your fourth of july holiday travel destinations, it could take a while to get there. it aaa says americans hitting the road today will see peak traffic levels. it predicts a record 42 million people will travel by car for the holiday despite gas prices nearly $5 a gallon. if you're depending on the airlines for independence day, good luck.

it is uber's second-ever safety report, and it shows sexual assaults in its ride-hailing vehicles are down since its last report, but the rate of fatal car crashes have increased. it covers 2019 and 2020 in the u.s. and says there were 141 reports of rape. in all, uber says it received 3,824 reports of sexual assault, down from about 6,000 in 2017 and 2018. in the latest report, 101 people died in car crashes. across the country yesterday, off-duty delta pilots picketed at some major airports. it came as travelers gear up for the busy fourth of july weekend. the pilots are pushing for better pay and schedules saying they have not gotten a raise in more than three years. a spokesperson for the airline pilots association said there would be no walkouts this weekend. and some americans will see a boost in wages beginning today. workers in more than 20 states, cities, and counties are getting it as higher minimum wages kick

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ it happened again. for the second time this week, a tourist in yellowstone national park was attacked by a bison. this is video from the first incident monday where a 34-year-old man was gored. now the park says on wednesday a 71-year-old woman was walking to her car when a bison charged and gored her. thankfully she's going to be okay. cleveland browns quarterback deshaun watson's disciplinary hearing is over after three days. two dozen women accused him of sexual misconduct in lawsuits.
