live from the cbs bay area studios. this is kpix5 news. >> and now at 7:00 on a weekend, meantrate american independence, some residents say they have never felt less free. how some are using this holiday weekend to fight for their rights. >> and a smash and grab spree. one bay area neighborhood waking up to a frustrating and familiar sight. >> being a firefighter around the fourth of july is like being a elf at christmas. you will be busy. >> and we ask a doctor, how do you safely celebrate the fourth of july in the middle of statewide covid spikes.

good evening and thanks for joining us. the fourth of july usually a time when people celebrate the country's independence. but since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade, some abortion rights groups say they have little reason to celebrate. we spoke with residents who refuse to give up the fight. >> reporter: supporters of abortion rights came here to washington park to keep up the momentum that started after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. they say they will maintain that energy and stick with this cause until abortion is protected across the country. >> i just couldn't sit anymore. i had to form one for myself. >> reporter: rachel seer said she is just a mom and small business owner who felt she needed to do more. she knows that in california, most people agree with her, but she still believes they should stand up and speak out on abortion rights. >> i understand that maybe i'm yelling in to an echo chamber, but i can't not yell. >> reporter: she organized this

rally and march on saturday. sharing stories, abortions helped loved ones who were not ready for children. >> i wanted it so bad and i was heart broken. but i needed the right moment. >> reporter: just the latest march out of many since the supreme court ruled over a week ago. supreme courter -- supporters of the abortion rights say the path ahead requires their commitment. >> the fight is just beginning. it will take, which makes me heart broken, a long time for this to be rectified. >> reporter: this is a day that celebrates personal protections with the civil rights act signed in to existence in 1964. this was after decades of struggle for equality. some are feeng t untry backward from its own history taking rights

away. this november, voters will decide if abortion should be a protected right in california's constitution. >> i appreciate that so much about the state. i love living here and now i feel trapped here. >> reporter: while plenty support the supreme court decision, others see it as a defeat to democracy on the july 4th weekend. >> i have never felt less free on independence day. >> reporter: kpix, 5. >> there's new video in the newsroom of a sight that is all too common in san francisco a line of parked cars targeted by smash and grab robbers. this along lake street near the presidio, thieves left windshields shattered. one car so damaged, the owner covered the passenger door with a tarp. no report has been filed. in san matteo county, police are investigating a string of

home break-ins that happened minutes apart. three homes broken in to between 9:00 and 10:00, a number of rooms were ransacked and a neighbor called police after hearing an alarm and seeing a white suv driving off. >> the july 4th weekend, safe and sane fireworks are for sale, but they are becoming tougher to come by. even those are not considered safe by many in the bay area counties. sk >> reporter: we are in san bruno, one of the few areas you can buy fireworks. you can only buy the safe and sane fireworks here, and even these kinds are not allowed in a lot of the bay area. >> okay, we will get this one. which one do you want to get? >> reporter: buying fireworks is a yearly tradition. >> we like the fountains. >> reporter: they left with

quite the haul of safe and sane fireworks. >> we try to do it every year while we can. >> reporter: they stay on the ground and don't shoot up in the air. >> on monday, i can expect to have a line of people waiting for me while we are setting up the booth. >> reporter: but that designation doesn't mean they are okay to use i everywhere. most have banned all fireworks. you are in the city of san bruno. >> in san jose, even those labeled safe and sane, are illegal to use, own or sell. >> we are on pins and needles here just waiting for the fire call to come in. >> reporter: the captain is with cal fire based in san matteo county. >> it's typically around skyline here. we see a lot of fires along highway 35. and along the vista points along

280 as well. >> reporter: back in san bruno, where the safe and sane fireworks are allowed, the vendor said that the proceeds help community nonprofits. >> for the legion and marine corp league, we help veterans. this man plans to be extra careful. his hope for everyone's celebrations this year -- >> just safe and everyone enjoy without problems. >> happy fourth. >> reporter: kpix5. >> reporter: fourth of july happenings are happening as covid spiking again. last check, california's test positivity rate shot up to just shy of 15% and that's up from about 13% last week. it's all fueled by new virus strains that are highly contagious but generally won't cause you serious diseases if you are vaccinated. if you are somebody who is unvaccinated, or older in

particular, and unboosted, you are going to have a higher chance of dying regardless, even though omicron is billed as a less serious covid. >> dr. peter chin hong said if you plan to attend gatherings wear a mask and have taken tests in the days leading up to the event. >> let's look live at the bay area airports that are jam packed this holiday weekend, expect long lines and delays. sfo has seen 22 cancellations in the past 24 hours. but at last check, oakland has seen none. and if you are stay in the bay area. you can take your family to the marin and alameda county fairs. after two years of restrictions and shut downs, they are seeing record ticket sales in marin county. >> reporter: the reyes county is excited the marin county fair is

back after a two-year break for covid. the fair is their family tradition. but this year, instead of just riding the rides and walking the midway, this family is on a mission. >> we have been here, coming here for 20 years as a family. this is our first time ever having a booth. >> reporter: their booth is all about the beads. 80,000 of them. and they have a prime location next to the big farris wheel. >> they loved it because they don't have anything like this and they have never had anything like this in the fair. >> reporter: also, new at the fair this year is a giant sun fla flower. >> it's the national flower of ukraine. >> with the world seemingly spinning out of control. people may be ready for a fair. advanced ticket sales have broken all records. >> i don't know, maybe this skinny green one? right here? >> reporter: and back at the bead booth, they are getting

inside, it's dark. happens so often when you are on tour. you are like, i don't know what baltimore is like, i just went to menu and left. >> reporter: the free and oldest music festival set in a natural ampitheatre has sold out every show. his sound is considered soulful and sense driven. he got his start doing open mics in hotel utah. >> i got my friends to go down and put my name on the list and wait all night watching all the other great artists. some of them were insane. ♪ ♪ >> cold war kids front man nathan willet said the band's music is soulful rock and roll. they performed virtually and on instagram live.

about -- but, for most of you on monday. you will get sunshine for a good part of the bay until we get sunset. the winds pick up and the clouds fill in, and there's what it's going to look like by the time we get to the show for most of the official fireworks displays. if you are in the immediate bay shore line, plan on most likely having clouds geting in the way. most will have a clear show and the good news is besides the cooler temperatures, that strong on shore surge on the clouds is keeping the humidity levels in a very good place. we will look at extreme fire

through the next few days. that is the way. they have it tonight. and a similar story for the fourth of july. for your sunday, those clouds will burn back to the beach. >> tomorrow, daytime highs. right in line with what -- low 70s and 60s. monday has been one mortem of interest. right out here. weak little system. this actually develops in to an area of low pressure. a weak storm, and right off of the coast, in early july. watch the spin in the clouds. that is unique. we don't often get an area of

low pressure that comes to us like that. it's part of why the reason that the marine layer will stay deep and strong and an added item to that, although not as significant, that system will have rain of its own. we will try to drop rain. and i don't think that we get much from that. more likely we continue to get the mist that we had like this morning. we have .05 of an inch of rain. and coming the morning the marine layer was thick. expect it for the next few mornings. if you are bay line, gray soppy mornings. and we look at the warm up. friday, san jose is back in the mid 80s. and we will be near 90 for some of our inland locations by then as well. vergne, over to you. >> giants scoring struggles a streak halted at wimbledon. and the warriors ran the floor at chase center
