live from the the cbs studios, this is kpix news. on a weekend meant to celebrate independence, some in burlingame say they never felt less free. and usually july fourth usually means fireworks, but it is harder to find them. and it is yet another surge of covid wave, and we will have a doctor weigh in on how best to protect yourself. i'm devin fehely and we will get to those stories, but first, we

will see how a fire ripped through contra costa and james dolan road. they say that illegal fireworks sparked that fire and burned 2 1/2 acres in windy conditions. >> that drives home the point of how dry the landscape is, devyn. look, it is misting on the lenses up on the hotel up on knob hill. it is a strong showing of the marine layer and those are the low clouds and fog pulled in over antioch and really over all of the inland valleys. waking up to gray skies again, and we tied a record for rainfall in san francisco because of this. we have 0.4 rain because of it, and it is going to stay gray until afternoon and then you will see more breaks of blue sky and that is when we go into the mid-70s, and sunny afternoon,

and then 66 in the bay and a.m. drizzle. we will be back in forecast for the fourth of july, and we will be back to you. >> thank you. fourth of july is the time to celebrate the independence, but since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade, some groups say they have little reason to celebrate this year. shawn chitnis spoke to some on the peninsula who are determined to keep up the fight. >> reporter: some are meeting to keep up the momentum after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade and they will maintain the energy and stick with the cause until abortion is protected across the country. >> i could not sit anymore and i had to form one for myself. >> reporter: rachel sears says she is a mom and business owner who felt she needed to do more. she knows that in california most people agree with her, but they should stand up and speak

up for abortion rights. >> i understand that i am yelling into the echo chamber, but i cannot not yell. >> reporter: she organized a rally sharing personal stories and abortions helped loved ones and a decision she had to make before becoming a mother. >> i wanted it so bad but i needed the right moment. >> reporter: and the latest march before the decision a week ago and a path they will honor their commitment. >> this fight is going to be -- and this is the heartbroken, but a long time before it is rectified. >> reporter: and this is going to be signed into law after a struggle for equally when equal

rights were signed is. some feel that their rights were taken away. this november, voters will decide if it should be a protected right with the california constitution. >> i love that with this state, but now i feel that i am trapped here. >> reporter: and while many support the decision with the confirmation that the government is working to honor the constitution, others see it as a defeat for democracy on the july fourth weekend. >> i have never felt more less free on independence weekend. >> reporter: burlingame. and now, we have more on the smash and grab that happened saturday when the thieves punched holes and left windshields damaged, and it happened when one covered the

door with a tarp, and the police said that only one report had been filed. and three homes were broken into between 9:00 and midnight when the thieves smashed windows and doors. a number of homes were ransacked on row hampton road and police were called when they saw a white suv drive away. this weekend, fireworks are sold in the bay area, but they are tougher to come as se in every county. >> reporter: we are in san bruno, one of the areas where you can buy the fireworks and you can only buy the safe and sane fireworks here, but even these kinds are not allowed in a lot of the bay area. >> okay. we will get this one, and which one do you want to get? >> reporter: buying fireworks is a tradition for the medina

family. >> okay, the fountain. >> reporter: johnathan and his son went to buy them. >> we try to do it every year while we can. >> reporter: safe and sane fireworks stay on the ground and they don't shoot up in the air. >> by monday, i can expect a line of people for me when i we set up. >> reporter: but most of the communities have banned all fireworks. >> in san mateo and santa cruz, all fireworks are illegal including the safe and sane, unless you are in san bruno or san pacifica, and this is the only place. >> and in contra costa, they are illegal. >> so we are kind of on pins and needles waiting for the call. >> reporter: and they are in san marino county. >> we are right here at the sky

station, and we see the fires along highway 35 at the vista points, and along 280 as well. thank you so much. >> reporter: back in san bruno where the safe and sane are allowed, the vendor say that the proceeds help the community nonprofits. >> for the legions and the vf with, and the marine corps, we use the proceeds to help the veterans in the communities. >> reporter: and david bought some for his family. he says that he plans to be extra careful and his hopes for everyone for the celebrations. >> to be safe and without any problems. >> reporter: in san bruno, max darrow, kpix5. and you can take your family to fairgrounds after two years of shutdown, they are reporting record ticket sales. and there are signs of renewed popularity. >> reporter: the family is happy

after a two-year break for covid, the fair is back. the fair is their family tradition, but this year instead of just riding the rides and walking the midway, this family is on a mission. >> but we have been here, coming here for 20 year as a family, and so this is the first time having a booth. >> reporter: the booth is about the bee. 80,000 of them, and they have a prime location next to the big ferris wheel. >> they love it, because they have nothing like this, and they have had nothing like this at the fair. >> reporter: new at the fair is the giant sun flower, the national symbol of ukraine and meant to be a show of support. >> there are things going on in this world that we still need to fight against. >> reporter: with the world seemingly spinning out of control, the world may be ready for a fair, because the ticket sales have broken all records. >> i don't know, maybe the skinny green one right here. >> reporter: back at the bead

booth, they are getting ready for the crush of kids. >> yeah, although the kids can be helping. >> reporter: but for charlie and nicole, this fair is like a flashback. >> oh, my goodness, they would not ride a pony, but we are right back here. >> reporter: the memories, smiles and right here, and the family using thousands of beads to string together new memories at the marin county fair. the highway's maximum patrol period is in force this weekend keeping an eye out for drunk drivers or speeders this weekend. and there are going to be additional officers patrolling the streets keeping an eye out for fireworks and also a side show patrol in some areas.

climbing. it is fueled by new strains of the omicron variant, and the infectious specialist peter hong says that it is highly infectious and may evade the vaccines is and so he is encouraging everybody to get boosted. >> if you are up to date for the vaccines and boosted, it is doubtful that you will get ill from the variants. >> reporter: but you should have your gatherings outdoors and wear a mask and take precautions up to the days to the event, and covid is still out there, and maybe we are done with it, but it is not done with us. >> and if you are older and someone who is not boosted, you dyghougll a less serious devyn,

welcome back. the time is 6:14 and the bay area is cut throat for any business but in the pandemic, it is more difficult for the restaurant, and as you can see, we are seeing some bright spots returning to san francisco. two popular restaurants have opened their doors and kpix was there. >> reporter: the restaurant business is one of the hardest hit in the pandemic, but restaurant owners are feeling optimistic as we saw two restaurant openings. after a two-year closure, the lights are on at the marina district. the dining room is full, and the cocktails are flowing. >> people in the neighborhood are really happy that we are back and we have had a warm

open, and even though it is a holiday weekend, and not a lot of people are around, it is great. >> reporter: lori and her husband jeff banker say it is too difficult to keep up the outdoor dining service and they closed in the early days of the pandemic, and they used the time to revamp the interior space and craft a new incorporate asian cuisine. >> jeff was private cheffing, and i was helping him, and we got a grant from the government to help us going. >> the williams family were regulars prepandemic. >> i love the food so much, and i'm happy to be here. we kept instagraming them and messaging them, when are you ready, and so when they finally announced they were opening on the 30th, we were here on the first day.

>> reporter: at gar dilly square, they were here at the pie guy's official opening and promising success which is the grand for the business that started as a pop-up. >> it is nonstop since 2:00 and i am excited because i got to san francisco as covid started and i saw the city shutdown. so i am happy to be part of something that is creating jobs for san francisco. >> reporter: the staff was busy with the detroit-style pizza. >> seeing how much we have blown up on social media and the bay area, it is exciting for the people who have come out. >> in san francisco, betty yu, kpix5. >> restaurant workers say they are still facing supply chain shortages and shortages of staff. taking a look outside, it is still a cloudy day with the

first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> yes, it is misting out for most locations near the water. i keep coming back to the little fact that we tied the record for rainfall in san francisco yesterday. we tied the record for july 2nd, and it was all morning mist like this. and if we are looking at this from a couple of higher vantage points of mount diablo, walnut creek and concord are sitting out there, and you guys are all waking up to this stuff. the temperatures are out there in the mid-50s and as a result, it feels like yesterday where everybody is waking up to gray skies and a little bit misty. looking at the high view, this is the high image satellite imagery, and this is the view of way above where it is, and you can see where san francisco is, and this is the marine bay which is some of the fog getting pulled along delta breeze, and

sacramento is waking up to this, and this is going to be back before late afternoon and when we get the sunshine and the second half of yesterday, and it is going to be just like yesterday. you will see a lot to mist along the shoreline, and only up to 70s in the inland locations and that theme is going to hold into the holiday, and hopefully now you have enough information to plan the sunday. this is planning your fourth of july afternoon, and the daytime highs on fourth of july for the hottest inland location, they are not getting out of the 70s all day, and across the bay, we o1 deg below oyn te do the

ut still low to everybody else. not dramatically different from normal, but still, it is a relatively cool day, and of course, in terms of the low clouds for monday evening, we are timing it out right there, and that is monday taking us ahead through 7:00, 8:00, 10:00 at night when the clouds fill in the immediate bay again. so likely not the best show this year for fireworks anywhere near the water, but if you are inland, you can remain hopeful to be able to hold off the low clouds from moving in too far, and you will get a decent show of the official firework shows happening monday. and now, the other item in the first alert forecast, after we have three days of this wonderfully cool weather, look at this. the tend of the week, and specifically for us, the numbers for oakland which are going to climb back up into the mid-70s,

we will see the temperatures for the north bay valleys climbing to 90, and we will be back up to average for this time of the year, and if we take those numbers for san jose specifically, you will back up into the mid-80s for the day time highs in the south bay by the time we get to friday and saturday. >> you know, you were not kidding by the time we took a walk, and it was like sweatshirt weather in san jose, and it is amazing this july, and this chilly at times. >> yes, and you will get three more days of this, too, but you will warm back up, and everybody will for the end of the week, but it worked out great for the holiday. >> great. >> and look at my desk. it is full of content from me to you. and look at this. this is the white caps coming up, and the wind is definitely blowing by the bay to the giants' dugout through the wind of play yesterday, and hang

is. you can see the temperatures of the city, and another way looking at the future cast and of course, by the time we get to late morning and early afternoon, inland, 75 in general and plenty of sunshine. for the bay shoreline, it is mid-60s with the a.m. drizzle and we are getting the light mist out of this again, and just a couple of hundredths of rain, and if you are at the bay shore or certainly at the coast, and more numbers for day time highs, 76 in free month, and 72 in san rafael, and i will be back with the july fourth forecast in a little bit. but for now, back to you, devyn. >> thank you. triple-a is predicting that millions of people will be taking a trip of 50 miles or more. at sfo, there were two flight

cancellations along with 17 delays according to flight aware website, and that is pretty good compared to the rest of the nation. wendy says that a scheduling glitch is causing massive problems for the rest of the country. >> reporter: it could not have happened at a worse time with staffing shortages and weather, and american airlines had a scheduling platform that allowed pilots to opt out saying that 12,000 flights lacked a pilot or co-pilot. so american suspended the majority of the schedules so that operations will not be impacted. the snafu is coming as the industry is dealing with canceled aflights. >> we got here, and we were just told that we are canceled. >> reporter: his flight canceled before his own wedding today.

firefighters this weekend. a fire broke out near antioch, and this is the good news, no homes or buildingsings were damaged or hurt, but it is a reminder to leave the fireworks to the pros. fire crews in easternbuding knock p-up efforts to make sure it does not reignite. the police chief is stepping down from his role on the city council in uvalde. the resignation is coming more than a month after the mass shooting at robb elementary which led to the public criticism of the police response where he was the on-scene commander. he says in the resignation

you sight a track. there is a new app that is shark sightings and there are several spotted off of the coast of massachusetts which has limited swimming near cape cod, and one beach goer was attacked off of the bay, and now, use common sense. >> don't dump bait, because it is causing the sharks to have a feeding frenzy. >> swim in groups and don't swim at night, and take the lifeguard's instructions seriously. >> nationwide, there have been 47 shark attacks and that a 42% jump from the previous year. taking a live look outside, it is going to be another cool day around the bay, and that is a switchover with our meteorologist darren who has the details. >> yes, we are doing exactly what we did yesterday. starting out gray bay area-wide,

and that is the view from treasure island, and going to mount diablo, this is contra castro county and walnut creek, and you are under that, and the tri valley, you are looking like that, and now, waking up gray, and visualization is going to show you how wide it is. it is going to melt back, and by the time we get into the early afternoon, most of lus see sunshine except for the beaches where you have the clouds hanging on. remember what yesterday looked and felt like? this is the same today. and the temperatures are in the tupr 5s for most locations. the daytime highs are the story as a result of this. only going to the low to mid-70s for the warmest inland locations. santa rosa, 76, and san jose is going to hit 71, and mid-60s on the bay shore today, and these numbers and these clouds exactly repeat for tomorrow on the fourth of july, and in light of that, the one thing that i am pointing out is how cool the temperatures are going to be for

this time of the year for what would be average for the fourth of july, and those are the daytime highs for the midland locations. and it is going to be feeling really nice. of course, in addition to the cool temperatures for tomorrow evening, that is the future cast visualization showing you the clouds building back in for monday early evening, and for fireworks, if you are in the bay or the bay shoreline coast, you or a firewor show. but ininland, you will get a good display for any of the official fireworks show, and also, monday, a weaker cooler system off of the coast to help to deepen the marine layer . wah the spinn the cudsisoakeusg someg like that comes produce some rain for northern most california county and mendocino, but it is a mix,

and the only meaningful rain worth talking about is the mist that is happening from this deep marine layer, regardless of the weather system off of the coast today and tomorrow morning as well. 0.02 of rain that we will see from the coast. so we will stay like this for a couple of days. and then, san jose, you will go to the mid-80s by friday and saturday. looking at the microclimates, we are warming up to mid-90 by the time we get to saturday. so it is a dramatic swing in the temperatures for sure from the low to mid-70s today to 90 over there, but those numbers are actually pretty much where we should be, and it is not like it is necessarily a heat wave coming our way, devyn, after coming off of a wonderfully cool

it is 6:56 and time for a look at the top stories a. fire rip through dry grass in eastern contra costa county. this is is the scene on james dolan road. firefighters suspect that illegal fireworks burned that about 2 1/2 acres in windy conditions. and oakland police are beefing up staff to patrol the streets keeping an eye out for illegal fireworks and also a side show enforcement team, and additional officers in marin and oakland. and extra officers will be patrolling the roads and keeping
