i'm matt pieper in for anne-marie green. police say a person of interest n pcuits say 21-year-d beht aer an hours-anun at leapl and 30 wounded when a gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop. hundreds of people ran for their lives when shots ran out. bradley blackburn is in highland, illinois, with more. bradley. >> reporter: matt, so many families were here along the parade route and it's striking to see the chaos left behind, lawn chairs, strollers, kids' bikes just abandoned when the shooting started. this morning a suspect is in custody after this patriotic celebration was ripped apart by senseless violence. the gunman opened fire from a rooftop spraying bullets onto

the crowd below as people watched an independence day parade. >> i remember hearing shooting and then reloading and again and people screaming and running. all i thought about is just, you know, gettin daughr to safety. i ran with her. >> reporter: close to nine hours later police took a person of interest robert crimo iii into custody. officials said his vehicle was spotted and he was stopped after a brief chase. >> the subject was taken into custody without incident. >> this individual is believed to have been responsible for what happened. they processed a significant amount of digital evidence today, which helped lead investigators in this direction. >> reporter: police believe the gunman used a high-powered rifle to tire from a spot on top of a commercial building here along the parade route. they say he was very difficult to see. >> we saw a man shot in the back, another on the floor bleeding and another shot. >> reporter: this man who brought his 5-year-old son to the parade in this chicago suburb initially thought the

fourth of july gun fire was a navy gun salute until he saw people running and the horror unfolding. >> it's horrible to see all that terror. >> reporter: investigators uncovered a firearm at the scene. five adults died there. one victim died at the hospital. officials say five of those were adults. the age of the sixth person hasn't been released yet. matt, we know that patients who were treated at area hospitals ranged in age from as young as 8 all the way to 85. matt? >> bradley blackburn in highland park, illinois, thank you. overnight two police officers were wounded after shots were fired during fourth of july festivities in philadelphia. you can see a large crowd running away at around 9:45 last night as fireworks were being set off. officials say there are no arrests or suspects at the moment.

police say both officers have been treated and released. one of the officers was grazed in the head. you can see the bullet resting in his hat. the police union president said the officer had the prayer card on his recently deceased father in that hat and his dad was an angel on his shoulder. last night's fireworks show in akron, ohio, was canceled after the mayor declared a state of emergency after a 9:00 p.m. curfew over a protest over a police shooting. body cam video showed police killing an unarmed black man. jayland walker was shot 60 times during a chase. wnba star brittney griner is appealing directly to president biden to try to avoid a long prison sentence in russia.

she sent him a handwritten letter asking for help as she faces trial. catherine herridge has the details. >> reporter: imprisoned basketball star brittney griner seen last week at the start of her trial sent a letter to the president. i'm terrified i might be here foefr, griner wrote, about her detention by russian authorities. it hurts thinking about how i usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this different. arrested in february at a moscow airport griner's trial began last week. in her personal plea, griner urged president biden to free all u.s. hostages. i realize you're dealing with so much, but please don't forget about me and the other american detainees. please do all you can to bring me and others home. >> be sure to tune in to "cbs

mornings" later today.ithife chs handling this difficult time. fireworks lit up across and security was tight as millions of people gathered in new york city for the 46th annual macy's fourth of july fireworks. five barges on the city's east river fired more than 50,000 shells and effects last night. fireworks were held along the national mall in washington, d.c. president biden and his family watched the show from the white house balcony. but not everyone was fortunate enough to see a fireworks display lat night. as our carter evans reports, many places around the country canceled shows for many reasons from climate change to shipping backlogs. >> reporter: we honor our

freedom with patriotism and pyrotechnics, but shows were canceled due to droughts and wildfire sacramento couldn't find enough workers. and cities like phoenix couldn't get fireworks due to shipping displays. >> there's a huge demand. >> reporter: american pyrotechnics association president steven pelkey said suppliers were only able to fill about 75% of fireworks orders. >> the west coast has probably been hit the hardest because those companies that are relying on the port of l.a., a lot of those companies have been waiting two, three, four months for their inventory. >> you say 90% of your fireworks come from china. >> 90% come from china, and we were relying on the last few containers to get here. >> reporter: jim sousa's business nearly went out of

buzz due to lockdowns and canceled shows. this year his fireworks barely made it. >> they should have been here in april and they just arrived last thursday and friday. >> wow. so right down to the wire. >> right down to the wire. >> reporter: some cities will illuminate the night sky with drones and laser beams. but whether it's fireworks or another alternative, organizers just want you to enjoy the show. >> come together with family and friends, celebrate, look to the skies. i'll do the rest for you. >> reporter: carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. now that the fireworks and barbecues are all wrapped up, millions of americans who went away are now returning home. there is good news for those taking to the airport. nikki battiste reports. >> reporter: a little normalcy returned to u.s. airports after a july 4th weekend filled with cancellations, delays, and frustrated flyers. >> right on time, left on time, traffic wasn't bad. the key is getting in early. >> reporter: since thursday u.s.

airports have had about 2,200 cancellations and 24,000 delays, but that's an improvement from the last two holiday weekend this summer. tsa screened more than 9 million travelers since thursday, up about 15% from last year, just shy of prepandemic numbers with airlines flying a reduced summer schedule. >> it's clear the airline sector is not ready to meet public expectations, and i'm concerned about that. >> reporter: in an interview sunday morning secretary of travel pete buttigieg.

fireworks-related death in indiana. those are some of the stories on the morning's newsstand. an 11-year-old boy died in an incident that involved fireworks. it happened sunday night in evansville. his mother said he died playing with fireworks in a tragic accident. an autopsy is planned for today and police are investigating. "the washington post" says the u.s. officials have declared a bullet unintentionally fired may have shot and killed a palestinian journalist. shireen abu akleh was shot and killed in may while covering a story in the west bank. her death set off violent clashes between israelis and palestinians including at her funeral procession in may.

>> and reuters says pope francis is denying he's planning to resign soon in an exclusive interview at the vatican. the 85-year-old told reuters he might resign one day if his failing health made it impossible for him to fulfill his duties. he denied he has cancer. he said he's healing from a knee fracture. he said he hopes to visit moscow and kyiv later this month. still to come, man versus hot dog. the raining champ of a hot dog eating contest defends his title while fighting off a protest.

the death toll is rising after a part of a glacier collapsed down a mountain in italy. we showed you a video yesterday of ice, snow, and rocks rolling down the alps. officials say at least 17 are dead and 14 hikers missing. the area has been experiencing record-high temperatures, and scientists say the glacier has been rapidly melting in recent years. and here's your shot to own an olympic medal courtesy of ryan lochte. he's keeping the golds for now. the money raised will go to a charity benefiting terminally ill children. lochte says the medals themselves are not important and it's the memories that matter to him.
