it's thursday, july 14th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." inflation soars. yearly consumer prices jump to a 41-year high. the white house responds as one major bank warns a recession within months. water's been in the road, and it's -- houses in the road. it's just a mess. >> flooding fears. dozens unaccounted for after powerful storms in virginia. how one woman and her 2-year-old son got trapped inside their home. last resort. president biden talks tough about iran while in the middle east. how far he says the u.s. would go to prevent them from getting a nuclear weapon. good morning, and good to be

with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with your bottom line following a record jump in the latest inflation report. it surged more than 9% last month compared to the same time last year. the biggest increase since 1981. the federal reserve could hike interest rates again when it meets later on this month. meantime, bank of america is warning of a mild recession by the end of the year. analysts say economic momentum has slowed faster than they predicted. bradley blackburn is in new york with more on this. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. in real terms the average family spent almost $500 more last month to get the same products and services they did in 2021. prices just keep going up, and people are feeling the effects everywhere. rising inflation continues to take a toll throughout the nation. >> i mean, peaches are $1 each? it's kind of crazy. >> reporter: a report from the

department of labor says the consumer price index action assembly rated in june to 9.1% compared to a year ago, a level not seen since 1981. >> we're all living the same world. it affects all of us. some hit harder than others. >> reporter: higher rents and increased food costs helped power the surge, but gas and increase prices have been the biggest inflation drivers by far. >> we've all noticed mostly at the gas pump. i just filled our car, volvo suv up, and was quite expensive. >> reporter: an rv dealer blames sky-high fuel prices for a 50% decline in his business. >> i got sales guys that aren't going to be able to make as many commissions, service guys who doesn't as many units to work on. i've got cleaning staff that i'll have to lay off. >> reporter: the federal reserve has indicated it will likely gradually increase interest rates until inflation levels off. a hike of three quarters of a percentage point is expected later this month.

and president biden put out a statement saying this 9% number is unacceptably high, but he also pointed out that because of the cpi is calculated, the data doesn't reflect the drop in gas prices. the national average down about 40 cents a gallon. >> that's at least a little bit of good news. we need it. bradley blackburn, thanks. this morning, more than 40 people are unaccounted for in southwest virginia after devastating flooding. severe weather damaged at least 100 homes in buckhannon county tuesday and caused landslides and washed out roads. one woman said that she was stranded in her house with her son. >> the water kept coming up, and eventually me and my son, my 2-year-old son, were on an air mattress on the floor, and we were floating. the water was up maybe this high. >> the governor of virginia declared a state of emergency. so far there are no confirmed deaths or juries. the number of -- or injuries. the number of people unaccounted

for is expected to go down as cell service improves and rescue teams continue to survey the area. wnba star brittney griner will appear in a russian court today. she pleaded guilty earlier to drug charges and faces a ten-year prison sentence. griner's lawyer said that she broke the law unintentionally. the 31-year-old has been detained since february after russian authority said that she carried vape cartridges containing hashish oil to the airport. russian officials say griner could appeal her sentence or apply for clemency after a murder has been delivered. and president biden will meet with the prime minister of israel today as he continues his four-day swing through the middle east. yesterday he stopped at the world holocaust remembrance center in jerusalem. he presented a wreath where the remains of holocaust victims are buried. he also tried to reassure israeli leaders about his goal to stop iran's nuclear program. biden said that he'd be willing to use force as a last resort

and remains committed to bringing back the iran nuclear deal. >> the only thing worse than the iran that exists now is the iran with nuclear weapons. and if we can return to the deal and hold them tight, it was a gigantic mistake for the last president to get out of the deal. >> the u.s. and israel are expected to unveil a joint declaration today establishing their close military ties and strengthening calls to take action against iran's growing nuclear program. back in washington, house lawmakers have passed a bill to create a warning system for active shooters. 43 republicans and all but one democrat voted for the measure last night. under the bill people would be alerted if there's an active shooter in their community. meantime, supporters of stronger gun-control laws took their message to the nation's capital. families and survivors from uvalde, texas, and other mass shootings rallied yesterday. they're calling for a ban on

assault weapons. >> reporter: the agony and anger of losing loved ones in recent mass shootings nationwide took center stage on capitol hill. >> our communities are paying the high price. we're paying the price of our sanity. we're paying the price of our peace. >> reporter: last week a mass shooter killed seven people at a fourth of july parade in the chicago suburb of highland park. >> highland park is an experience, something that no community should ever experience. >> reporter: mary jo tinkoff, a ran for their lives that day as the 21-year-old suspect opened fire using a high-powered military-style assault weapon. >> i look over at my husband, i glance at him and he screams, "run." >> reporter: newly released surveillance video shows police inaction as the shooter massacred students and teachers. with president biden overseas, several of the families impacted

by the gun violence in uvalde and in highland park came to the white house to talk to deputy-level staffers about what can be done to prevent future tragedies. >> we want a federal ban on assault weapons now. >> reporter: u.s. lawmakers passed a new gun-control bill last month requiring enhanced background checks among other things for anyone under 21 buying firearms. but president biden is pushing for congress to go further, calling for the return of the assault weapons ban of 1994 that he helped pass when he was a senator. debra alfarone, cbs news, the white house. coming up, shark attacks. not one but two attacks are reported on beaches in new york. you'll hear how one victim put up a fight. and history at the u.s. capitol. a civil rights pioneer is honored with a statue. this is the "cbs morning news." news."

an ohio man has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who was forced to get an abortion in another state after the supreme court overturned roe v. wade. gerson fuentes was arraigned in court yesterday and is being held on $2 million bond. a police investigator said the 27-year-old confessed to attacking the girl at least twice. abortions are banned in ohio after the sixth week of pregnancy. the rule went into effect just hours the supreme court issued its decision last month. there were two shark attacks at beaches in new york, and actress amber heard had another legal setback. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports a judge rejected amber heard's request to set aside a $10 million judgment in favor of her ex-husband, johnny depp. the actor won a defamation suit against heard in a civil trial last month. she wanted the verdict set aside

or a mistrial, a mistrial declared citing a case of mistaken identity with a juror. her claims were rejected by the judge who said the juror issue was irrelevant and there's no proof that she was prejudiced. "usa today" says 7-eleven is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in a deadly string of shootings in southern california. authorities say a masked gunman robbed six stores, killing two people and injuring three others. the crimes happened in san bernardino, riverside, and orange counties on july 11 or 7-eleven. that's when the convenience store celebrates its anniversary. it's unclear just whether the date is significant to the crimes. the motive is still under investigation. and cbs new york says two more shark attacks were reported on long island. officials say a surfer suffered a bite several inches long from a four-foot shark yesterday morning. the 41-year-old was paddling with his arms when he felt teeth on his leg, and that's when he punched the shark.
