it's monday, july 18th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking overnight, deadly mall shooting. a man with a rifle kills three people and wounds two others at a food court in indiana. how authorities say a bystander stopped the gunman. if there's only one thing i can tell you is there were multiple systemic failures. >> scathing report. a texas committee slams local, state, and federal authorities for their response to the uvalde shooting. what the investigation found out about leadership and basic communication. back in washington. president biden returns from his four-day trip to the middle east. the white house calls it a success, but it's coming with a lot of controversy.

good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with breaking developments about yet another mass shooting in the u.s. this time it happened at a shopping mall in indiana. authorities say that a gunman killed three people and wounded two others yesterday at greenwood park mall south of indianapolis. police say a good samaritan legally armed with a gun shot and killed the suspect. harvey biggs is in new york with all the details on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. we're learning that good samaritan is a 22-year-old man. authorities say he witnessed the shooter open fire on innocent people in the mall and armed with his own gun took action that likely saved other lives. >> there's violence everywhere you turn and look around. it feels like you're not safe anywhere. >> reporter: police say a man armed with a rifle opened fire inside the food court of the greenwood park mall on sunday. three people were killed, and two others wounded before a bystander with a handgun shot the gunman dead.

>> the real hero of the day is the citizen that was lawfully carrying a firearm in that food court and was able to stop this shooter almost as soon as he began. >> reporter: officials said the injured included a 12-year-old girl. she and the other shooting survivor were hospitalized in stable condition last night. the identities of the victims have yet to be made public. nor have the names of the gunman or the civilian who intervened. >> i can tell you that he is a 22-year-old male from bartholomew county, that is all that i can release at this time. >> reporter: investigators believe the bystander likely prevented a much larger tragedy. they said the gunman brought several magazines full of ammunition with him to the mall. investigators are still working to develop a possible motive for the shooting. fbi specialists are at the mall to assist in gathering evidence from the crime scene. anne-marie? >> harvey biggs in new york. thank you so much.

well, the committee in texas released a scathing report about the police response in the mass shooting in uvalde. it criticized law enforcement at the scene and the gunman's family. some of the video which was edited by uvalde police to protect the identities of victims and witnesses, it may be hard to watch. one of the new police body camera videos released shows officers helping students escape through a window. authorities move from window to window telling the children where to run to safety as officers inside the school waited to confront the gunman. bo cam videos from the uvalde police department shows officers staked out around robb elementary school. you can hear the shooter firing at officers. and at least one officer expressing the need to get into the classroom where the gunman was holed up. >> we've got to get in there. >> reporter: eventually 376 officers, local, state, and federal arrived on the scene, according to a new report by the

texas house committee investigating the shooting. the investigation found they waited 77 minutes before moving if to take out the shooter. lacking clear leadership, basic communications, and prioritizing their own safety over saving innocent lives. >> they should have done more, acted with urgency, tried the door handles, tried to go in through the windows, tried to distract him. >> reporter: the three members of investigating committee released their findings in a meeting with families of the victims. 19 students and two teachers. their 77-page report found the shooter fired 100 rounds in the first three minutes. the report suggests some could have survived if they had not had to wait so long for rescue. >> they're a joke. they got no business wearing a badge. >> reporter: vincent salazar, grandfather of laila salazar, obtained the report but did not

stay at the meeting due to his distrust of local public officials and handling of the investigation. so far, much of the blame has been put on uvalde school police chief pete arredondo for his role as incident commander. but investigators suggest there were plenty of better trained and better equipped officers who didn't step up and could have contributed to the loss of life. some family members who attended the meeting left feeling dissatisfied. >>able, need to say, hey, i'm wrong, you're right. i was there, i did nothing to serve and protect y'all. >> reporter: following the report's release, uvalde's acting police chief the day of the shooting was placed on administrative leave. elise preston, cbs news. jury selection is expected to begin today in the contempt trial of former trump strategist steve bannon. bannon's going on trial for refusing to testify or provide documents to the house committee investigating the january 6th capitol attack. last week he reversed course saying that he was willing to testify to the committee. critics have questioned bannon's motives for offering testimony

now that his trial is about to begin. this thursday the january 6th committee will hold another primetime hearing. this one is centered around what former president trump was doing or not doing while rioters attacked the capitol. house members call his actions a dereliction of duty. the committee also subpoenaed the secret service to turn over text messages related to the insurrection by tomorrow. >> it is quite crazy that the secret service would end up deleting anything related to one of the more infamous days in american history, particularly when it comes to the role of the secret service. >> there's no word on exactly what those texts contained. there are conflicting reports about whether they were deleted. president biden is back in washington this morning after a controversial trip to the middle east. mr. biden stopped in saudi arabia and met with crown prince mohammad bin salman. during his run for president, mr. biden slammed the country and salman for the killing of

jamal khashoggi, calling the country a pariah. critics including some from his own party were quick to point that out. >> i just don't believe that we should be maintaining a warm relationship with a dictatorship like that. >> president biden is supplying -- flying to the middle east and fist bumping with murderers and despots, asking for more supply. what he could do is open up the keystone pipeline. >> the white house is defending his stop saying with oil prices soaring, stability is needed in the region. coming up, a west virginia man is in custody after his sister woke up from a coma and accused him of attempted murder. and later, rock and roll diplomacy. te rolling stones are joined on stage by a choir from ukraine to perform a classic. this is the "cbs morning news." is is the "cbs morning news." for people who are a little intense about hydration.

after months of jury selection, the penalty trial of the man responsible for the parkland, florida, mass shooting gets under way today. opening statements begin in the trial of nikolas cruz who pleaded guilty to murdering 17 people at marjorie stoneman douglas high school in 2018. a jury will decide whether he should get life in prison or the death penalty. the trial is expected to last for months. a coma patient woke up to reveal the name of her attacker, and there was a deadly plane collision in nevada. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "las vegas review journal" reports four people were killed when a pair of planes collided at an airport in north las vegas. the faa says a small plane was prepared to land when it crashed into another main around noon yesterday. there were two people in each plane, and all four were killed. the faa and ntsb will investigate the cause of the crash.

"usa today" reports a west virginia man is under arrest after his sister woke up from a two-year coma and accused him of assault. police say wanda palmer was nearly dead when they found her with severe head trauma in 2020. she was taken to a nursing home where she spent two years in a coma. >> we had basically responded to this emergency call that the family members had found for. she was on the couch slumped over with massive amounts of facial and head trauma. clearly stricken many times with some sort of -- what we believe to be an edged weapon of some sort. >> while unconscious, police could not find any leads as to who attacked her. upon waking up, palmer cold officials that her brother, daniel, was the one who attacked her. and the "associated press" says despite expanded use during the 2020 presidential election, there were no major problems with ballot drop boxes. the "ap" conducted a survey of

"thor: love and thunder" stayed in the number-one spot for the second weekend in a row earning $46 million in north america. but ticket sales for the movie dropped 68% since its debut. "minions: the rise of gru" came in second with $26 million. and "where the crawdads sing" finished in third place with $17 million in its debut weekend. major banks including bank of america, goldman sachs, and charles schwab will release their quarterly earnings today. and there's a lot of folks on -- loss of focus on netflix this week. elise preston explains why in today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: stocks rallied friday ending the week in the green. the dow gained 658, the nasdaq rose 201. the s&p 500 added 72. netflix is set to release its second-quarter earnings report tomorrow. a very critical one for the streaming company's future. the platform lost billions of dollars in market value when this year's first-quarter earnings report showed the company lost subscribers for the first time in more than a decade.

it's official, jennifer lopez and ben affleck have tied the knot. according to the newsletter they got a marriage license and said "i do" at a chapel saturday night in las vegas. for the wedding lopez wore a dress from a, quote, old movie, she called it the best possible wedding we could have imagined. lopez signed the newsletter as mrs. jennifer lynn affleck. an australian golfer made a stunning comeback to win the british open over the weekend. cameron smith started the final round four shots behind the leader. but on the back nine, he made five straight birdies en route to his first major championship. he's the first australian to win at st. andrews since 1960. >> i think to win an open championship in itself is probably going to be a golfer's highlight in their career.
