wildfires and a deadly heatwave torch most of europe. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with a heated conversation in uvalde, texas, where angry parents are demanding local school board members step down. families slammed school and federal officials last night. they're asking for accountability after a scathing report detailed failures in response to the mass shooting that left 21 people dead at robb elementary in may. harvey biggs is in new york with the details on this. harvey, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. it was an emotionally charged morning as family victims demanded answers and shared their frustrations with officials. the house committee found among other things, poor decision-making and a lack of leadership on that tragic day. grief and anger continued to be on display in uvalde, texas.

>> for the injustice that was done to our children. >> this was the scene last night as angry residents and parents sounded off at a local school board meeting. they want to know what is being done to safeguard the schools in the future. many also calling for district police chief pete arredondo to be let go. >> if he's not fired by noon at tomorrow, i want your resignation and every single one of the board members because you do not give a damn about our children or us. >> they're blamed for failing to take charge. but a preliminary report by the district house investigatory committee says other agents should have stepped up and assumed command. the investigation found, quote, egregiously poor decision-making at the heart of the botched response to the shooting. >> we've got to get in there. we've got to get in there. he keeps shooting. >> surveillance video shows police arrived at the school within the first minutes of the

911 calls. a total of 376 law enforcement officers from nearly two dozen federal, state, and local agencies descended on the scene. they waited over an hour before moving to take the gunman down. school officials told parents they're considering delaying the start of next school year to make sure more safety measures are in place. that report also reveals family members of the gunman say he was bullied as a fourth grader. he attacked the same fourth grade he attended. anne-marie? >> harvey biggs in new york. harvey, thank you. we're learning more details on the prime time january 6th hearing on thursday. there will be at least two people testifying. one of them is matthew pottinger, former deputy nat national security adviser. he was the most senior white house official to resign after the capitol riot. sarah matthews, former press secretary, is also expected to testify.

she resigned as well following the insurrection. the committee is expected to detail what president trump did or did not do during the hours on january 6th as rioters stormed the capitol. thursday's hearing could be the final one of the summer. and jury selection will continue today in the contempt of congress trial for steve bannon. a long adviser for former president trump faces criminal charges for refusing to cooperate with the capitol riot investigation. yesterday he criticized the televised public hearings. >> it's nothing but a show trial. it's time they started having other witnesses who can give other testimony other than what they've been putting up. >> 12 jurors and two alternates are needed for bannon's trial. a brutal heatwave is torching europe, leading to deaths, wildfires, and evacuations. in some areas, temperatures are 30 degrees above normal. ramy inocencio is reporting from london.

the first lady of ukraine is in washington, d.c., this morning. olena arrived yesterday. she's expected to talk with jill biden today and then lawmakers tomorrow. the two ladies first met when jill biden traveled to ukraine. prince harry spoke and dr. anthony fauci had some news of his own. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. dr. anthony fauci said he will retire by the end of president biden's term. the 81-year-old infectious disease expert said his plans are not fully settled, but he would most likely step down by 2025.

pop artist claes oldenburg known for his oversized sculptures of everyday objects has died. the swedish born american rose to flame in the 1950s and '60s in new york city. some of oldenburg's best known works include the 45-foot clothes pin on display in philadelphia and the 96-foot-tall bat called bat column. he died yesterday at the age of 93. it seems gm headquarters will stay in the motor city, at least for now. ceo mary barra said there are no plans to move from the seven-tower complex in downtown detroit. but she admitted she doesn't know what will happen in five, ten, or 15 years. >> if there's opportunities where we can improve that area and do the right thing for the city, we will.
