i'm anne-marie green. the house committee investigating the capitol riot returns to primetime tonight. the panel will lay out minute by minute president trump's actions. members of the select committee will show more evidence on trump's confrontation with secret service agents who allegedly refused to drive him to the capitol. the security officials dispute that account. serena marshall is in washington, d.c., with all the details. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning to you. and the committee investigating the capitol riots has called the president's inaction that day a dereliction of duty, but it is that question of what exactly was happening inside the west wing they want answers to, and they hope two former officials at the white house that day can help explain during the primetime hearing. it's the last scheduled hearing of the summer tonight, and the january 6th house committee members say the focus -- what former president trump was doing as a mob rampaged back to you

-- through the capitol building. >> focusing on those critical 187 minutes between when the attack on the capitol started and when donald trump finally issued a video statement asking people to leave the capitol. that's so important to know what donald trump was doing and why he didn't ask people to leave sooner. >> reporter: helping to lead the questions, one of the panel's two republicans, illinois congressman adam kinzinger. >> the reality is, i'll give this preview, the president didn't do very much but gleefully watched television during this timeframe. >> reporter: testifying in person during the primetime hearing, a pair of former white house officials, both of whom resigned january 6th following the violence. former deputy adviser matt pottinger and deputy press secretary sarah matthews were working that day. >> i stand with trump and the constitution. trump won. biden's illegitimate. >> reporter: as for steve bannon, he struck a defiant tone following day three of his contempt of congress trial. prosecutors rested their case after calling just two witnesses to discuss bannon's refusal to cooperate with the january 6th committee. bannon's attorney argued that he

never actually said no to the committee request. they said bannon had been trying to negotiate the terms of his testimony until as recently as last week even though that offer came only days before his trial was slated to begin. while tonight's hearing is the last scheduled event after more than 1,000 witnesses and nearly a year of investigating, the committee says they could continue having more hearings into the fall. anne-marie? >> serena marshall in washington. thank you. and you can watch tonight's hearing starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern here on cbs news and the cbs news streaming network. well, now to the summer heat that is burning up parts of the u.s. and europe. more than 105 million people were under heat advisories or excessive heat warnings yesterday stretching from california to new england. firefighters in texas braved temperatures above 100 degrees to fight a wildfire near dallas. it's destroyed at least 16 homes and damaged five others. in europe the unprecedented heat

this weekend. >> we're concerned about the consecutive one day after the next of high temperature, high heat. >> reporter: overseas, europe continues to burn as wildfires rage in multiple countries including near athens, greece, and madrid, spain. >> emptiness. >> reporter: fernando gimenez had to quickly flee his village. he wonders if anything is left. to find.- norees, we're going nothing. >> reporter: in london officials say fighting tuesday's wildfires were the busiest crews have been since world war ii when the nazis bombed the city. naomi ruchim, cbs news. president biden laid out new executive actions on climate change. he spoke at a facility in massachusetts for offshore wind energy projects yesterday. he stopped short of declaring a national emergency. mr. biden announced plans to help communities and low-income americans deal with extreme

weather. >> first time states will be able to use federal funds to pay for air conditioners in homes, set up community cooling centers in schools where people can get through these extreme heat crises. >> calls for a national emergency declaration have increased among activists and democrats after senator joe manchin said he would not support a $300 billion climate bill. well, school board members in uvalde, texas, are holding a special meeting this weekend, and they could fire pete arredondo. he's the school district police chief criticized for his handling of the shooting at robb elementary back in may. 19 students and two teachers were killed there. arredondo said that he didid hih sctends e fired. and a lightning strike killed one soldier and injured nine others at an army base in georgia. the storm moved over ft. gordon

outside of augusta. authorities said the strike happened midday in a training area. there's no word on the condition of the nine injured soldiers. the military base has not released any of their names just yet. and donald trump and his family said their final good-byes to ivana trump. the former president attended a funeral yesterday for his ex-wife. on social media, trump called it a sad day but also a celebration of a wonderful and beautiful life. a friend of the family spoke about the service. >> all the children spoke. they captured the essence of their mom. she was a force of nature. >> ivana trump died last meek problem injuries she suffered during a fall. and coming up, emergency landing. passengers and crew are injured after their flight hit severe turbulence over florida. and later, righting a wrong. a california beachfront is returned

minor injuries after severe turbulence aboard an american airlines plane. it left tampa yesterday afternoon en route to nashville, but the plane ran into a bad storm system and made an emergency landing in alabama. american airlines says six passengers and two crew members were taken to an area hospital. details of their injuries were not released. another plane picked up the other passengers to continue on to tennessee. a great white shark washed up on a new york beach, and ukraine's first lady addressed congress. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports the first lady of ukraine asked congress for more weapons to fight russia. olena zelenska spoke to lawmakers in the u.s. capitol yesterday. she accused russia of hunting

for peaceful people in peaceful cities. she thanked the u.s. for all the support so far but requested more help. >> i'm asking for something now i would never want to ask. i am asking for weapons. weapons that would not be used to wage a war on somebody else's land but to protect one's home and the right to wake up alive in that home. >> she received a standing ovation. she stood in the same location where her husband virtually addressed congress shortly after russia invaded ukraine. cbs new york says a dead great white shark washed up on a long island beach. police responded to a call about a shark yesterday morning. it washed out to sea before officers could secure it. experts are hoping to recover the carcass, though, to study how it died. the sighting comes after a recent increase in shark attacks across the country including five off long island in just the past two weeks. and the "orlando sentinel"

says nasa has set launch dates for the artemis one rocket. yesterday the mission manager said they are looking at a window from august 29th to september 5th. the announcement came on the 53rd anniversary of the "apollo 11" moon landing. the test flight won't have anyone on board, but it's a major step to help return astronauts to the moon as early as 2025. still to come, a summer cocktail with a cheesy touch. we're going to show you a new martini that's dripping with a famous cheese. ese.

it's the center of the universe for comics fans. however, it doesn't officially open until tonight. many have been waiting two years during the pandemic for the annual convention to return to an in-person event. comic-con international runs through sunday. a prime stretch of california beachfront has been returned to its rightful owners nearly one century after it was taken from them. the descendants of charles and willa bruce received the deed yesterday to bruce's beach. it was once a resort for black families before the land was stripped from them in 1929. >> it's ecstatic. again, my thing is like this is a feeling of jubilation for us. if it wasn't for us, this whole thing happening, there would be so many people out there that would still have this longing to see happen. >> bruce's great grandsons are leasing the $20 million beach to the county for just over $400,000 a year. after public pressure the u.s. postal service is going green, and velveeta is serving

up a new martini with a cheesy twist. matt pieper has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch." >> reporter: a back and forth day on wall street ended with more gains for stocks wednesday. the dow gained 47, nasdaq up 184, the s&p 500 taking in 23. might want to sell that house now as the housing market appears to be cooling. prices have increased with the median sale price of an existing home at $416,000 in june. but existing home sales declined for the fifth straight month. despite the higher prices, homes are still selling quickly. properties remained on the market an average of 14 days last month. electronically delivered envelopes. the u.s. postal service says at least 40% of its new delivery trucks will be electric. initially the postal service sought to make about 10% of its fleet ev. president biden set a goal for the entire government fleet to be ev powered by the year 2035.
