night, cal fire said it was a successful day for aircraft and firefighters, resulting in minimal growth on the fire. >> this morning we reported 10% containment on the fire. tonight we're reporting 16% containment. it's not a huge number, but it's a pretty big percentage jump. >> reporter: the oak fire broke out friday and quickly spread to over 17,000 acres just west of yosemite national park. it's already destroyed 50 homes and other buildings while forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. >> i'm exhausted. i'm just very exhausted. >> reporter: officials said dry windy conditions in the area helped fuel the flames, which followed the path of a major 2018 wildfire. >> it's actually butted up against an old fire, the old ferguson fire. it has slowed it down. the vegetation there is not as dense where it has not burned. >> while in texas 20 homes were destroyed from a gas fire. investigators believe it may

have been started by a spark from a lawn mower blade that struck an object on the ground. now yesterday the biden administration says the government will plant more than 1 billion trees across millions of acres of burn and dead woodlands in the western u.s. to help forests that have been devastated by wildfire, insects, and other factors related to climate change. wendy? >> trinity chavez in new york. thanks. there were some frightening moments at an airport in dallas where a woman fired a gun into the air. the 37-year-old suspect was shot by police and remains in custody this morning. nicole baker has the details. >> reporter: this appears to be the moment a police officer shot 37-year-old portia odufuwa shortly after investigators say she opened fire in dallas love field airport. >> our officer engages the suspect, strikes her in the

lower extremities, she's taken into custody, and is currently at the hospital. no other individuals were injured in the event. >> reporter: police say odufuwa went to the bathroom, changed clothes, and as she came out, she shot toward the ceiling. this woman said she was yelling about her husband's affair. >> after she said she was going to blow the effing "f" word up and shot up. we were basically getting out, trying to get safe. >> reporter: travelers scrambled for safety, some huddling behind chairs, no one sure what was happening. >> looks like we have a scene on the west side of the airfield. it looks like a shooting close by. >> reporter: the shooting caused hundreds of flight delays and dozens of cancellations. joan and her husband had their trip interrupted. >> yeah. i think we're not going to catch that flight or the connecting flight. it's just people, solid packed

federal grand jury looking into the january 6th attack. short was at the capitol the day of the siege. he was also with pence as he hid from rioters who stormed the building. the justice department has been investigating efforts of allies of former president trump to overturn the results of the 2020 election. pope francis issued a long-awaited apology for the catholic church's role in the treatment of indigenous people in canada for decades. he appeared before thousands of people yesterday, including survivors of the country's residential christian schools. he said it was a disastrous error when the church forced more than 150,000 native children from their homes from the late 1800s to the 1990s in an attempt to make them christian. thousands of children were physically and sexually abused. >> for some, the apology may not be what is needed to begin their healing journey.

hollyw hollywood is remembering veteran actor paul sorvino who died yesterday of natural causes. sorvino was best known for playing mob boss pauley cicero in the movie "goodfellas." he played a police sergeant on "law and actress. one of his children is actress mira sorvino. paul sorvino was 83 years old.

a huge whale lands on a boat off the coast of massachusetts, and jared kushner reports he was treated for sanser while acting as senior adviser in the trump white house. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "the new york times" reports former president trump's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner said he was treated for thyroid cancer while in the white house. the previously undisclosed information is in kushner's upcoming memoir that will be published next month. kushner says he did not tell mr. trump about his diagnosis, but the then president found out anyway. kushner says a substantial part of his thyroid was removed during surgery in 2019. reuters said a co-defendant was exonerated on a related charge. steven lopez, who is now 48 years old, was 15 when he was arrested along with five over
