i'm matt pieper, cbs, new york. it's it's friday, july 29th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." flooding catastrophe. at least eight people are dead after torrential rains leave parts of kentucky under water. >> you can't support the troops. you support the war machine. that's all you care about. failing u.s. veterans. comedian and veterans advocate jon stewart lashes out after burn pit legislation gets blocked in the senate. the reason for the holdup. feeling lucky? more than a billion dollars is up for grabs in tonight's mega millions drawing. how some people are really going the extra mile to buy tickets. good morning.

good to be with you. i'm wendy gillette. anne-marie green is off. we begin in kentucky where the death toll is expected to rise after heavy rains and flash flooding hammered the eastern part of the state. at least eight people have died so far, but the governor said the number will likely grow into the double digits. the storms destroyed what's believed to be hundreds of homes, prompted water rescues, and knocked out power to tens of thousands of people. dan lieberman is in new york with more. dan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, wendy. well, one emergency official in hard-hit eastern kentucky described the situation as catastrophic as water rescue crews searched for stranded people. take a look. dozens of homes were submerged while others floated away in the eastern appalachian part of kentucky. >> it's beyond the scale of anything that i've ever been involved with. >> reporter: relentless rains unleashed devastating and deadly floods as fast-rising water sent people to be rescued by life

boats. >> our death toll is growing. by the end, we expect it will be in double digits. >> reporter: thursday governor andy beshear said a number of people remain unaccounted for and warned that property damage in kentucky would be widespread. >> there's nothing really that you can do but, you know, we're glad that we got out. >> reporter: this woman watched as trailers and moments floated away fearing her house would be among them. >> my mom and i had bought that house together. i hate to lose it. but right now it's looking like we're not going to be able to save it. >> reporter: elsewhere flash flooding pounded counties in missouri and forced people to wade through high water on roads in st. louis. in arizona, monsoon rain hit areas outside phoenix. back in kentucky, gospel singer abigail eversole was overcome with joy after recovering her six string after it had floated down a creek. >> this guitar is probably the

most valuable thing. it was in my room aside from my bible. >> reporter: her mom said she plays the guitar and sings every week at a local nursing home. late last night kentucky's governor tweeted that he asked president biden for federal assistance, adding that the damage suffered is enormous, and recovery will be a long-term effort. wendy? >> dan lieberman in new york. dan, thanks. president biden is trying to ease fears about whether the country is heading into a recession. a new report shows the u.s. economy shrank for a second straight quarter. debra alfarone has the details. >> reporter: president biden pushed back against talks of a recession on thursday, pointing to parts of the economy that remain strong. >> there's going to be a lot of chatter on wall street and among pundits about whether we are in a recession. if you look at our job market, consumer spending, business investment, we see signs of economic progress. >> reporter: the remarks come

after the commerce department reported the country's gdp fell for a second straight quarter. >> recessions are normal parts of the economic cycle. >> reporter: cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger says the definition is less important than how americans are doing. >> what matters is people are freaking out that prices remain high. it is hurting people who make less than the median household income of $60,000 or $70,000. >> reporter: polling continues to show the economy's a top concern for many americans, and with the midterm elections quickly approaching, democrats are hoping to pass a new bill aimed at fighting inflation. >> and a godsend for families -- >> reporter: the legislation lowers health care premiums and drug prices, boosts alternative energy including tax credits to buy electric cars, mostly paid for by a 15% minimum corporate tax increase. >> should knock down gas prices, should knock down basically high costs across the board. >> reporter: republicans say it will make matters worse. >> it's going to feed the fires of inflation.

>> reporter: though the bill lacks any gop support, senate democrats hope to pass the big -- the bill as early as next week using a process known as budget reconciliation. debra alfarone, cbs news, the white house. there was outrage on capitol hill after senate republicans blocked a bill providing health care to veterans exposed to toxic burn pits while serving overseas. democrats were ready to celebrate passage of the bill yesterday which had earlier support from the gop. but republican pat toomey blocked it citing concerns over what he said was $400 billion in spending unrelated to veterans. the disagreement fired up >> haven't met a veteran they won't screw over. >> this is total -- this is the worst form of over-politicization i've literally ever seen.

this is total bs. >> the measure is expected to come up for a another senate vote on monday. president biden and his chinese counterpart could meet for the first time since mr. biden took office. that's according to a white house official after both leaders talked on the phone for more than two hours yesterday. one of the topics was taiwan. chinese officials who chamber the island as their territory want house speaker nancy pelosi to cancel a possible trip there. mr. biden said the u.s. opposes efforts to undermine peace across the taiwan strait. we've been talking about this one for a while, but could someone become a billionaire tonight? the mega millions jackpot has grown to $1.1 billion. it's just the fourth time a u.s. lottery has surpassed the lines to buy tickets since they are not sold everywhere. the largest jackpot ever won in mega millions historli1..

from families of 9/11 victims. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports former president trump criticized the pga tour and praised saudi arabia for backing the controversial new liv golf tour. a liv tournament gets under way today at a trump golf club in new jersey. the upstart liv tour is poaching stars from the pga by paying them huge fees. but the saudi-backed tour has come under heavy criticism. in 2018 american intelligence officials concluded saudi crown prince mohammad bin salman authorized the murder of "washington post" journalist jamal khashoggi. families of victims of the 9/11 attacks are upset over reports the saudi government provided support to some of the terrorists. >> when you first learned that bedminster would host a liv tournament, what was your reaction? >> shock, anger. beyond comprehension.

>> it is not known how much the tour is paying trump for the use of his golf clubs. "detroit free press" says eight city firefighters were hospitalized after a burning building collapsed. two firefighters were trapped inside the vacant building yesterday. one was able to escape quickly, but the other had to be rescued. he was reported in serious condition. most of the injured firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion. there's no word on the cause of the fire. and "the seattle times" says a vehicle fire forced all lanes of interstate 5 in the area to be shut down. a truck carrying propane and oxygen tanks caught fire and exploded yesterday. the truck driver was able to escape safely. officials warn residents living nearby to shut their windows and doors to avoid heavy smoke from the fire. all of the freeway's lanes were later reopened. still to come, candy crisis. why it may be difficult to find some of your favorite sweets come halloween.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ some dramatic images out of ukraine where russian missile strikes fell in a park in kharkiv. surveillance footage captured some of the blast which damaged a storage hangar and left a crater nearby. a park official said the hangar was used to store new year's decorations and other items. authorities in kharkiv say apartment buildings and schools have recently been targeted by russia. the city of san francisco has declared a state of emergency over the growing number of monkeypox cases. health officials report more than 280 cases. they had to shut down the primary vaccination clinic after

it ran out of doses. monkeypox has affected primarily men who have sex with men, although anyone can get infected. >> this is a very triggering moment for our community. and i would say that it -- it does always affect us when there's a health crisis in a really passionate and important way because of the devastation of the aids crisis. >> the biden administration said more than 780,000 doses of the monkeypox vaccine would be available nationwide today. after days of backlash, instagram is making changes again, and there could be something really scary this halloween -- a possible candy shortage. matt pieper explains in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed broadly higher again thursday after a shaky start on a report that said the country's gdp fell yet again. the dow gained 332. nasdaq up 130. the s&p 500 gaining 48.

well, this happened quickly. right after spirit and frontier's merger fell through, jetblue said we have a deal. jetblue is buying spirit airlines for $3.8 billion, creating the nation's fifth largest airline. frontier's offer was more than $1 billion less. the combined carrier will have 460 planes and add 1,700 flights in 30 countries. the deal still needs the required regulatory approvals and approval from spirit's stockholders. kardashians to the rescue? the family and a whole lot of other people were vocal this week about changes instagram was making. it included content from accounts that people do not follow versus posts from friends. instagram was also testing full-screen posts similar to how posts appear on tiktok. now the company's walking back both of those changes. the viral post this week many shared, make instagram instagram again.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ ♪ it is a big day for the bee hive. beyonce's new album "renaissance" dropped overnight featuring the hit "break my soul." this is queen bee's seventh solo studio album and her first in about six years. although it was released at midnight eastern time and an earlier copy in europe. dozens of spectators showed up for the annual baseball game in washington, d.c. protesters were demanding more

action on climate change. three people were arrested. during the game itself, lawmakers had to take cover in the fourth inning when rain started falling, but nothing could stop the republicans from winning for the second year in a row. they shut out the democrats 10-0. the game raised money for local charities. a dinosaur skeleton sold for big bucks at auction in new york city. the gorgosaurus which is a smaller relative of the t-rex sold at sotheby's yesterday for $6.1 million. it roamed the earth 77 million years ago. the nine-foot-tall, 22-foot-long skeleton was discovered in montana four years ago. sotheby's says there aren't many of these bad boys around. >> it is rare to find a gorgosaurus, period.

there are maybe 20 known gorgosaurus specimens in the world versus more than 50 t-rex skeletons. >> some paleontologists were not so happy with the bones being sold. but in the u.s., fossils found on private land can be sold for profit. the auction house did not disclose the name of the seller or the buyer. and you can take your friends and confidantes out to dinner at the "golden girls" kitchen. the beverly hills popup restaurant opens this weekend celebrating the women from the long-running sitcom, the "golden girls." among the items, sophia's lasagna, cheesecake, and memorabilia from blanche, dorothy and rose. more are planned in miami and chicago. coming up on "cbs mornings," multitalented artist billy porter joins us to talk about what it's like being a first-time movie director.
