u.s. and china. she held a news conference with taiwan's president saying members of congress will not abandon their commitment to the self-governing island. her visit is angering china where military exercises surrounding taiwan are now under way. china has also blocked imports of citrus and fish from taiwan in retaliation. trinity chavez is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and that's right, after intense threats from china, nancy pelosi is in taiwan making her first house speaker to visit in 25 years. her arrival could further strain relations between the u.s. and china. however, the biden administration insists that it does not signal a change in the america's one-china policy. taiwan welcomed house speaker nancy pelosi to the self-ruled island democracy that china claims as its own. defying threats from china, she is now the highest ranking american official to visit taiwan in a quarter of a century. while receiving an honor from

taiwan's president, pelosi highlighted the decades' long u.s. commitment to taiwan. >> 43 years ago with a taiwan relations act, america made a bedrock promise to always stand with taiwan. >> reporter: the california democrat also spoke of china's strident opposition to her visit. >> they will not stand in the way of people coming to taiwan. that's a show of friendship, of support. >> reporter: china considers visits by foreign officials as a sign of recognition of taiwan's sovereignty which china challenges. across the narrow taiwan strait, china responded, announcing new military drills ringing taiwan and warned that the u.s. would pay the price for undermining china's interests. >> we don't want to see this spiral into any kind of a crisis or conflict. again, we would say there's no reason to. >> reporter: for pelosi, making waves with china is nothing new. in 1991 she unfurled a pro-democracy banner in

beijing's tiananmen square. and today before she deports taiwan she's expected to meet with human rights leaders which could further rangle china. on capitol hill senators are considering legislation to strengthen taiwan's defense. the taiwan policy act which has bipartisan support would bolster taiwan's defense capabilities and provide other support for taiwan's democratic government and civil society. the measure would also designate taiwan as a non-nato ally. elise? >> trinity chavez in new york. thank you. breaking overnight, results from primary elections across five states. the following are all cbs news projections. in kansas, voters upheld the right to an abortion in the state. they rejected a measure that would have allowed the state legislture to tighten restrictions or ban abortions outright. it's the first such vote since the supreme court overturned roe v. wade in june. in arizona, there's no clear winner yet in the republican primary for governor. karrin taylor robson who was endorsed by former vice

president pence is in a dead heat with kari lake who is endorsed by former president trump. the winner will face democrat katie hobbs in november. in michigan, governor gretchen whitmer who ran unopposed in the democratic primary will defend her seat against tudor dixon who won the republican nomination. and in missouri, attorney general eric schmitt won the gop nomination for senate over 20 other candidates. he will face democrat trudy busch valentine, an heiress of the anheuser-busch beer fortune. president biden says he's looking forward to signing a measure expanding health care benefits for veterans exposed to toxic military burn pits. the senate passed the bill overwhelmingly last night after it was held up by republican opposition last week. comedian and advocate jon stewart praised veterans who fought for the measure. >> i'm not sure i've ever seen a situation where people who have

already given so much had to fiht so hard to get so little. >> the legislation will expand benefits for more than three million veterans. a defamation case against conspiracy theorist alex jones continues today. he's being sued for $150 million after calling the 2012 sandy hook elementary school massacre a hoax. 20 children and six adults were killed. a jury will decide how much he must pay the parents of one young victim. yesterday they testified that jones' lies made their lives a living hell. janet shamlian has more. >> reporter: emotional testimony from neil heslin. he's the father of 6-year-old jesse lewis, killed at sandy hook elementary in 2012. >> when you lose a child, you're losing part of yourself. those feelings don't go away. >> reporter: heslin and jesse's mom are suing conspiracy theorist alex jones. jones on his infowars program

told his audience of millions that the massacre was hoax, calling the victims and their families crisis actors. >> they staged sandy hook. the evidence is just overwhelming. >> reporter: parents are asking for $150 million saying they've endured years of harassment and threats by jones' followers. >> alex started the fight -- i'll finish this fight. >> reporter: heslin called jones a coward for not being present for his testimony. jones was in court as scarlett lewis, the boy's mother, took the stand and addressed him directly >> my son existed. you're still on your show today trying to say that i'm implying that i'm an actress. >> raise your right hand -- >> reporter: jones took the stand in his own defense. >> i never intentionally tried to hurt you. there were a lot of questions. i had questions. >> reporter: jones put his company into bankruptcy last

week which may delay two other damage trials scheduled for september. janet shamlian, cbs news. there's some breaking news in the world of baseball. hall of fame broadcaster vin scully has died. the los angeles dodgers said scully died last night at home. he was the longest tenured broadcaster with a single team ? -- in pro sports in history spending 67 years with the brooklyn and los angeles dodgers. scully was inducted into the baseball hall of fame in 1982 and even received the presidential medal of freedom in 2016. in a statement the president and ceo of the dodgers said, "we have lost an icon. vin scully was one of the greatest voices in all of sports. he was a giant of a man, not only as a broadcaster but as a humanitarian. vin will be missed truly." vin scully was 94 years old. the state department has issued a warning about violence against americans following the death of te leader of al qaeda. officials said there's a higher potential for terrorist groups to plan attacks across the globe

hospital must provide the treatment necessary to stabilize that patient. this includes abortion when that is the necessary treatment. >> attorney general merrick garland said idaho's law would make it a crime for doctors to provide the emergency medical care required by federal law. "the miami herald" says the dolphins must forfeit two draft picks, and owner stephen ross was suspended as part of the nfl's investigation into tampering. the league said the team had improper contact with quarterback tom brady while he was under contract to the new england patriots and later the tampa bay buccaneers. the nfl said the dolphins also spoke with an agent for sean peyton about becoming head coach before peyton announced his decision to retire from the new orleans saints. ross was also fined $1.5 million. and "usa today" says florida is expecting at least 100,000 visitors for nasa's first launch of its new artemis one rocket

lenders resulting in higher interest rates and denied applications. some scores changed by as much as 20 points in either direction. the company says it notified lenders and has fixed the error. another oops, this time from the owner of t.j. maxx, tjx was selling recalled products and now has to pay $13 million for the mistake. the consumer product safety commission says the chains sold 1,200 recalled products over a five-year period. the products include fisher-price's rock and play sleepers which led to the deaths of 50 infants according to a congressional report last year. and you wanted your mexican pizza, you're getting your mexican pizza. taco bell relaunched the popular dish back in may but then took it off weeks later due to high demand. now the chain says the pizza will be back on the menu for good september 15th. that is your cbs "money watch" report for this wednesday morning. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york.
