the $740 billion inflation reduction act includes funding for health care, climate, and energy programs. the lone holdout was arizona senator kyrsten sinema. last night the democrat said she's ready to move forward on the bill as long as the senate's top rules officials sign off it on. party leaders hope to begin voting as early as tomorrow. also breaking overnight, cbs news projects kari lake has won the gop nomination for arizona governor. the former tv news anchor who was endorsed by former president trump defeated businesswoman karrin taylor robson. lake will now face democratic secretary of state katie hobbs in november. the biden administration has declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency. there are more than 7,100 cases across the nation, the most in the world. the government will devote more funding and resources to fight the virus. some health clinics do not have

enough vaccine doses to go around. michael george is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. health experts say we have to accelerate the vaccination effort, and the white house says this emergency declaration will help do that. while monkeypox is primarily impacted men who have sex with men, the virus does not discriminate. it can infect anyone. for weeks san francisco lawyer stephan ferris has been carefully applying ointment to his skin in the hopes of easing some of the pain. >> the sores that hurt were the ones on my hands or genitals. >> reporter: thursday the biden administration declared monkeypox a public health emergency. the move is aimed at bolstering the nationwide response to the outbreak after an estimated more than 7,000 cases have been detected in the u.s. which leads the world this case counts. declaring an emergency frees up money and other resources. monkeypox can cause fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and pimple-like bumps on parts of the body. >> this is largely a

self-healing illness. >> if you have a roommate or something like that and you're in close proximity or touching them, you know, then there's a potential to spread that. >> reporter: in cities like new york and san francisco, health authorities say they don't have enough of the two-shot vaccine to meet rising demand. an additional 150,000 doses are now expected in september. that's in addition to 1.1 million doses already available. that's still a fraction needed for those considered to be high risk. >> the vaccines are safe and highly effective. and it's about protecting you and protecting our community. >> reporter: in response to the shortfall, some clinics have stopped with the second dose to ensure there are enough first doses to around. while monkeypox can be extremely painful, it's rarely fatal. so far there are no confirmed deaths in the u.s., though have been fatalities overseas. >> michael george from new york. thank you.

four people were critically injured in a lightning strike near the white house last night. some of that storm was captured by a cbs news crew. take a listen. [ thunder ] that loud boom forced our crew to pack up and leave. as for the people who were injured, fire officials say they were at a park standing near a tree. they were yards away from the fence that surrounds the white house. conspiracy theorist alex jones must pay more than $4 million to the parents of a 6-year-old boy killed in the 2012 sandy hook school shooting. a jury delivered its decision yesterday against the "info. wars" host who falsely claimed the shooting was a hoax. 26 people were killed including 20 students. the boy's family was seeking $150 million. today the same jury could order jones to pay more in punitive damages. dina demetrius explains. is this your verdict, the ten of you who signed it?

>> reporter: a texas jury has ordered alex jones to pay more than $4 million to the parents of jesse lewis killed in the sandy hook massacre. it's the first time the "info. wars" host has been held financially liable for falsely claiming the attack that killed 20 children and six educators in newtown, connecticut, was a hoax. >> i can't even describe the last 9.5 years of the living hell that i and others have had to endure because of the negligence and the recklessness of alex jones. >> reporter: on his radio and webcast show, "info. wars," jones said the sandy hook shooting was fabricated. on the witness stand he reversed course. >> it's 100% real. i think sandy hook happened. i think it's terrible. >> reporter: lawyers for the family brought up shocking revelations that jones' attorney accidentally snt them years worth of text messages showing jones had withheld evidence.

[ inaudible ] >> it was my goal when i started on this case to get this family a multimillion dollar verdict for their pain and suffering and i've done that. >> reporter: last week jones' company filed for bankruptcy. the lawyers brought into court showing at one point jones made up to $800,000 a day from ads. dina demetrius, cbs news. federal charges have been filed against four current and former kentucky police officers in connection with the death of breonna taylor. the justice department announced the civil rights charges yesterday. they include obstruction, falsifying an affidavit to secure a search warrant, and excessive use of force. in 2020, louisville officers

burst into taylor's apartment in a botched raid looking for drugs allegedly stashed by a former boyfriend. a different man who was dating taylor and in the apartment fired one shot at the officers. they opened fire killing taylor. her mom called the charges overdue. >> i've waited 874 days for tday. >> this is a day that black women saw equal justice in the united states of america. [ applause ] >> two of the officers were fired earlier. inatioeedingns the otr two staryesterda police in minnesota are looking for the person who opened fire inside the mall of america. a witness captured some of the chaos on video yesterday as shoppers ran to safety. officers said two groups of people got into a fight, and someone fired three rounds into a store with customers nearby. fortunately no one was injured. the mall is expected to reopen

"the omaha world herald" reports police suspect foul play after four people were found dead in two nearby nebraska house fires. authorities say one person was found dead yesterday after someone reported an explosion at a house in the small town of laurel. re repor anoth house a few blocks away where three people were found dead. police did not say if any of the victims were related. >> we're trying to get to the

bottom of it, and it's very early in this investigation. it would be a stretch to say that there's no connection, but it's very early in the investigation, and we hope to find those answers in the coming days. >> schools and businesses in the community went on lockdown after the bodies were discovered. no arrests have been made. [ applause ] >> the asian nation's first lunar orbiter hitched a ride aboard a spacex rocket from florida's cape canaveral. the $180 million mission will send a satellite to the moon and look for a future landing site for a robotic probe. south korea wants to land its own spacecraft on the lunar surface by 2030. the satellite is set to arrive at the moon in december. meantime, for spacex what goes up must come down. farmers in a remote part of australia recently discovereded some mysterious objects on their farms. nasa says the charred debris likely came from a spacex capsule that was intentionally jettisoned as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere in may of last year. people in the area are being told that more pieces could
