home. yesterday the fbi executed a search warrant of former president donald trump's mar-a-lago estate. sources tell cbs news it was in connection with the justice department's investigation into whether he took classified records to his florida residence when he left the white house. trump, who was not there at the time, said agents opened up a safe in his home in what he called an unannounced raid. dan liebermann is outside of trump tower in new york with more on this developing story. dan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. yes, it's shocking developments here for the former president who was actually here at trump tower behind me in new york city yesterday as fbi agents searched his florida home. sources tell cbs news the fbi's mar-a-lago search is connected to a justice department investigation into how former president trump handled white house records. the probe is looking into claims by the national archives that it found 15 boxes of records at

trump's florida estate earlier this year. some of the material is said to have been classified. trump issued a statement saying, mar-a-lago was, quote, under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of fbi agents. and it said after working and cooperating with the relevant agencies, this unannounced raid on myom not necessary or appropriate. in a stant age alke inthis safe. >> what they need is probable cause that there was a federal crime that was committed and probable cause that the evidence of that crime is where they say it was, in this case at mar-a-lago. >> reporter: the former president was in new york at the time of monday's fbi search. this video shows him leaving trump tower. this morning the scene here outside the luxury fifth avenue building is relatively quiet. last night trump's son eric spoke out about the search. >> this came from one place and one building, and that is the white house in washington, dc.

they want to attack a guy who they view as his greatest threat, as biden's greatest threat. >> reporter: a senior white house source said he was given no advance notice of the search. sources tell cbs the warrant has nothing to do with the january 6th committee. in february the national archives requested that the u.s. justice department investigate the former president for his use of national records and not handing them over. in fact, some of the records that were handed over were torn and then taped back together. anne-marie? >> very interesting. dan liebermann just outside of trump tower in new york. thank you very much, dan. well, president biden and the first lady visited flood-ravaged eastern kentucky. they surveyed the damage and met with victims and first responders yesterday. at least 37 people were killed after a record rainfall more than a week ago. the white house says the government has provided more than $3 million in relief funds

to the state, and mr. biden pledged continued support. >> i don't want any kentuckian telling me, you don't have do this for me. oh, yeah, we do. you're an american citizen. we never give up, we never stop, we never bow, we never bend, we just go forward, and that's what we're going to do here. >> the national weather service says there could be more flooding with more thunderstorms forecast for thursday. and a fourth victim in the series of killings of muslim men in albuquerque, new mexico, has been identified. 25-year-old pakistani immigrant naeem hussain was killed friday night while returning from a funeral for two other victims. a 62-year-old man from afghanistan was killed in november. the muslim community is living in fear including the brother of one of the victims. >> it's painful. we are in shock.

we cannot go out of our house. my kids, whenever i step out of my room, they start crying. we didn't have any fear. now it is super painful. >> police are asking for the public's help in locating a gray volkswagen sedan that may be linked to the killings. and in georgia, more jail time for the father and son who chased down and killed ahmaud arbery, an unarmed black jogger. here's elise preston. >> i tell you, i feel every shot every day. >> reporter: the family of ahmaud arbery along with their attorney and civil rights leader reverend jesse jackson emerged from a court moments after travis mcmichael received a life sentence plus ten years for committing a federal hate crime. >> and he chose not to say he was even sorry. so he really showed the court, he showed the family, he showed

everybody who has been saying, what kind of people really took my son away. >> reporter: mcmichael was already sentenced earlier this year to life without parole in state court for shooting and killing the unarmed 25-year-old jogger. >> we, the jury, find the defendant, travis mcmichael guilty. >> reporter: as was his father, gregory mcmichael, who chased arbery through georgia in 2020 along with his son. the older mcmichael also received a second life sentence along with seven extra years. >> we're extremely pleased the court decided to follow the laws and follow the sentencing guidelines and offer a life sentence. >> reporter: william "roddie" bryant who reported the incident in his truck faced a federal sentence for his participation. >> they did not give him no mercy. they didn't give him a chance to finish his run, and you're asking for mercy? >> reporter: the federal prosecutors showed they had a history of racism and acted on

it. >> there's an understanding there's a leniency toward pri prisoners. >> reporter: attorneys for the mcmichaels have asked that they be allowed to serve their sentences out in federal prison. elise preston, cbs news, new york. well, tributes are pouring in for grammy-winning singer olivia newton-john. the australian superstar died yesterday at her ranch in southern california. no cause of death was announced, but she fought a decades-long battle against breast cancer. olivia newton-john sold millions of hit songs including "physical" and "i love you" and played sandy in "grease" alongside john travolta. in a statement he said, my dearest olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. you impact was incredible. i love you so much. we will see you down the road

this lawsuit to honor gabby's legacy by working to save the lives of victims of domestic violence throughout the united states and the world. >> the family argues if police responded properly, they could have saved petito's life. the "denver post" reports on an intense rainstorm that hit the city sunday night. teorogists say 1 3/4 inches of water fell in just 26 minutes. streets and highways in denver and surrounding suburbs were flooded. some resident had to be rescued. a state climatologist says intense bursts of rain like sunday's fits patterns linked to climate change. and the "associated press" says a new study suggests that spiders may snooze just like humans. cameras were set up near baby jumping spiders to see what happens during the night.
