president trump's home in florida. his supporters rallied outside mar-a-lago yesterday waving flags and chanting to protest what they called a raid. the fbi searched the estate on monday as part of an investigation to determine whether trump potentially mishandled classified material. last night he met with republican lawmakers at his home in bedminster, new jersey. one lawmaker said trump has made up his mind about 2024 and, quote, we'll all be happy with his decision. trinity chavez is in new york with more on all of this. trinity, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the search is related to allegations former president trump improperly removed documents when he left the white house and were brought to mar-a-lago including possible classified material. republican leaders rallied around former president donald trump and demanded investigations after the fbi executed a search warrant at his florida estate. >> i think every republican

believes that the fbi when it comes to trump and other organizations have lost their minds. >> you've never done this to a former president. so if this was going to be the case, shouldn't the attorney general lay out to the american people today, shouldn't that have been the very first thing explaining why. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news the search was connected to a justice department investigation of claims by the national archives that had found 15 boxes of records at mar-a-lago earlier this year. the document are believed to contain classified information. trump and federal investigators had been in negotiations over the records, and the fbi visited mar-a-lago in june. >> certainly a very, very significant development that criminal charges are at least being contemplated and are the basis for this unprecedented action by the fbi. >> reporter: mishandling classified material is potentially criminal. federal law requires presidential records to be turned over to the national archives. it is not known what documents were taken by federal

authorities monday. the justice department has so far declined to comment. in an interview, christina bob, a lawyer for trump, said investigators revealed they were looking for classified information that they think should not have been removed from the white house, as well as presidential records. now it is the first time in american history that a search warrant has been issued on a former president. white house officials say president biden has no prior knowledge of the search. anne-marie? >> trinity chavez in new york. thank you very much. well, representative scott perry says that his cell phone was seized by fbi agents carrying a search warrant. the pennsylvania republican says three agents visited him while he was traveling yesterday with his family and took his phone. he's been a figure in the house investigation into former president trump's actions leading up to the january 6th capitol riot. perry said he was outraged the justice department would seize thephone of a sitting member of congress. and breaking overnight, we have primary results from several closely watched races.

the following are all cbs news projections. in wisconsin, tim michels wins the gop nomination for wisconsin governor. the trump-backed candidate will face democratic incumbent tony evers in november. evers ran unopposed. also in wisconsin, republican senator ron johnson will defend his seat against democrat mandela barnes. johnson is considered a vulnerable republican seeking re-election. in minnesota, governor tim walz won the democratic primary and will face former state senator and physician scott jensen who questioned the efficacy of vaccines. voters in vermont could send a woman to congress for the first time in that state's history. state senate leader becca balint won the democratic nomination. she's going to face republican liam madden for a seat in the house of representatives. the search for a suspect in the murders of four muslim men in albuquerque, new mexico, appears to be over this morning.

51-year-old muhammad syed, who is originally from afghanistan, is in custody, charged with killing two of the men. authorities say that he is the prime suspect in the murder of two others. the killings sparked fear in the city's muslim community and elsewhere. omar villafranca has more. >> reporter: albuquerque's nightmare is over after police arrested a man for the murders of two muslim men. investigators believe he may be involved in killing two other muslim men over the past nine months. >> this crime made our community feel hike it was under attack. >> reporter: the police chief says 51-year-old muhammad syed is charged with two counts of homicide, and the district attorney's office is working on charges related to the other two. more than 200 tips poured in as a manhunt intensified, many from the muslim community. on sunday, police rehe'sed a picture of a car they believe was used in the shootings. >> we knew albuquerque would step up, and somebody would find and identify that vehicle for us come is exactly what happened. >> reporter: while a s.w.a.t. team executed a search warrant

at his home monday, the suspect was arrested in that car more than 100 miles away in santa rosa, new mexico. >> all told firearms were recovered from the home. right now we believe that at least one of them inside the home and one of them inside the car that was pulled over are matching to our two crime scenes. >> reporter: officials also discovered evidence that shows syed knew the v chips and said an interpersonal conflict may have led to the shootings. mohammad zahir ahmadi was killed in november. >> my brother. >> reporter: sharief hadi said the familyledstan to escape the violence. >> when we came to the united states, we thought we were safe. look at it, what's going on right now. >> reporter: police are continuing patrols around mosques and islamic centers to help the community feel safe. omar villafranca, cbs news, albuquerque. well, breaking overnight, one person was killed and several others hurt in a bus crash in new jersey. police say the double decker mega bus hit a pickup truck and overturned on to its side on a

new jersey turnpike service ramp. the company said five people were seriously hurt including the driver. the bus was traveling from new york city to philadelphia. in may, 27 passengers were hurt when a mega bus rolled over in maryland. tennis great serena williams says that the countdown to her retirement from the sport has begun. the 23-time grand slam champion detailed her plans in a personal essay in the september issue of "vogue." she wrote in part, "i have never liked the word retirement. maybe the best way to describe what i'm up to is evolution." williams, who turns 41 next month, said that she's ready to step away from tennis to focus on having another child and her other business interests. tennis fans reacted to the news. >> she actually came to the court, a single court in bedstuy next to our house, and i was like 6 and got to hit with her a little bit. >> she's the greatest women's tennis player of all time. she's going to be missed.

songs. from 1963 to 1967 he helped create more than 25 top ten songs. lamont dozier was 81. there's a new clue in the search for a california teenager, and a woman linked to "the new york times" reports a mississippi grand juryec -- decd to indict the white woman whose accusation led to the murder of black teenager emmett till in 19 carolyn bryant donham, who is now 88 years old, initially accused till of making improper advances toward her at her family's grocery store. that led to the abduction, torture, and lynching of the 14-year-old. his murder became a catalyst for the civil right movement. prosecutors said the grand jury found insufficient evidence to indict her on charges of kidnapping and manslaughter. the "sacramento bee" report

on a search for a missing 16-year-old girl in northern california. kiely rodni disappeared after a party in the campground of truckee. authority say there were more than 100 juveniles and young adult there. the case is being treated as an abduction because her car has not been located. her phone has also been out of service. the family is offering a $50,000 reward. >> i just want my daughter home. i want to give her a hug. i just want to know where she is. i just want to know what happened. >> hundreds of people have joined the search including dozens of fbi agent. and the "associated press" reports nfl commissioner roger goodell said the league's appeal of the suspension given to cleveland browns quarterback deshaun watson was the, quote, right thing to do. i officer suspended watson for six games for violating the nfl's personal conduct policy. two dozen women filed lawsuits accusing the quarterback of

the passenger escaped unhurt. the plane also hit a pickup truck, but there were no reports of anyone being injured. the faa is investigating. well, it's going to cost some drivers more green to go green with ford, and one pizza chain is saying ciao to italy. matt pieper has those stories in the cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed lower on wall street tuesday with nasdaq leading the charge lower and closing down for a third consecutive day. the dow lost 58 points. nasdaq down 150. the s&p 500 losing 17. competing with china. president biden has signed a chips and science act into law. it provides more than $200 billion to boost domestic production of semiconductor computer chips. it's an effort to be more competitive with china's science and technology efforts. the white house says it's a win for the u.s. economy that will reduce the cost of cars, smartphones, consumer electronics, and appliances, all of which require chips.
