pandemic. in an exclusive tv interview with cbs news yesterday, director rochelle walensky said the health agency had learned some hard lessons over the past three years. a report commissioned by walensky uncovered deep concerns been the cdc's culture and day-to-day practices. bradley blackburn has more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. cdc employees got the news just yesterday about what the agency is calling a reset. it comes after they did a hard look at missteps during the pandemic and as the cdc faces another big health challenge with a growing outbreak of monkeypox. cdc direction to rochelle walensky is ordering an internal organization over the covid-19 response. >> we need to have a special forces, if you will, to deploy during pandemic times. >> reporter: a report out wednesday commissioned by walensky found the cdc had become too rigid and bureaucratic to act quickly. it specifically cited its

analysis of data, the sluggish release of information to the public, and its confusing and overwhelming covid guidance. >> we've learned lesson and it's my responsibility, the agency's responsibility to learn from those lessons and do betterment. >> reporter: the cdc's reset comes as the agency works to contain another major public health crisis -- monkeypox. the virus has been declared a global health emergency with more than 35,000 cases now identified in 92 countries since the start of the year. >> the next pandemic is around the corner. if it's not a pandemic it's going to be another disaster -- >> reporter: dr. rita burke specializes in public health responses to disasters at usc's keck school of medicine. >> the emphasis on communication, the emphasis on timeliness, on collaboration, that is going to be the focus moving forward, and i think it's really where it needs to be. >> reporter: in the coming months, dr. walensky says the cdc will focus on getting information to the public more rapidly, developing a more nimble work force, and

addressing equity in health care. cdc officials say they hope to have these changes finalized and under way by early next year, but first the reorganization plan has to be approved by the secretary of the department of health and human services. anne-marie? >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you very much. former president trump's chief financial officer is expected to plead guilty today and testify against the trump organization. allen weisselberg is charged with taking more than $1.7 million in off-the-books compensation and failing to pay taxes on it. the plea deal will require him to speak in court today, and he could also serve as a witness when the trump organization goes on trial in october on related charges. he's expected to receive five months in jail. former vice president mike pence could become a witness in the house committee investigating the capitol riot. pence spoke in new hampshire yesterday saying that if there was an invitation to participate, he would consider it. he also addressed the search at

mar-a-lago for the first time, asking republicans not to target fbi agents. >> our party stands with the men and women who serve on the thin blue line at the federal and state and local level. these attacks on the fbi must stop. calls to defund the fbi are just as wrong as calls to defund the police. >> pence also said that he would call on attorney general merrick garland to justify reasons for searching former president trump's florida residence. rudy giuliani faced six hours of questioning before a special grand jury in georgia. giuliani, who served as trump's lawyer, returned back to new york city last night. he said that he's satisfied with his obligation to the subpoena but declined to comment about the hearing. the grand jury is looking into attempts by trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in georgia. natalie brand has more. >> reporter: rudy giuliani spent hours in an atlanta courthouse

before a grand jury as part of a criminal investigation looking into election interference in 2020. he briefly spoke to reporters before his testimony. >> talk about this until it's over. it's a grand jury, and grand juries, as i recall, are secret. >> reporter: do you believe president trump is the ultimate target of this investigation? >> i'm not going to comment on the grand jury investigation. >> reporter: giuliani is among a group of allies of former president president trump identified as targets of the fulton county prosecutor's investigation. the former new york city mayor, who served as a personal attorney to then-president trump, became one of his closest advisers in the aftermath of the 2020 election. he publicly made baseless claims of election fraud in key battleground states including georgia. >> the recount being done in georgia tell us nothing because these fraudulent ballots will be counted again. >> reporter: the special grand jury was formed in the beginning of this year. the fulton county district attorney says the investigation of spurred by the january phone call between mr. trump and

georgia's secretary of state. >> i just want to find 11,780 votes which is one more than we have. >> reporter: anthony michael christ who teaches law at georgia state university says the da appears to be getting closer to the former president's innermost circle. >> i doubt that if a conspiracy case was brought in georgia that it would be brought without the former president involved because he was a linchpin in all of this. >> reporter: giuliani's attorneys had tried to delay his testimony because he underwent heart surgery last month. the the judge ordered him to appear even though he could not travel by plane. natalie brand, cbs news, washington. three of the country's largest pharmacy chains are facing a big financial hit. a federal judge ordered cvs, walgreens, and walmart to pay two ohio counties more than $650 million for their roles in fueling the opioid epidemic. the counties won a landmark case last year claiming the chains

actor anne heche's death is been ruled an accident according to the los angeles county coroner. a report released yesterday says that the 53-year-old died from inhalation and burns. the car that she was driving slammed into a house earlier this month and burst into flames. heche also suffered a fractured sternum caused by blunt trauma. she was removed from life support sunday after being declared brain dead. investigators said narcotics were found in a blood sample. the lone survivor of a deadly lightning strike near the white house talks about what happened, and a 9/11 museum closes. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports a small 9/11 tribute museum in new york city closed yesterday. the museum which opened in 2006 featured exhs roun. the ceo said is closing due to financial pressures made worse

by lost revenue from the pandemic. it is not part of the much larger main 9/11 museum. most of the tribute museum's collection of artifacts is being moved to a state museum in the capital of albany. and "the washington post" reports on the lone survivor of a lightning strike near the white house. 28-year-old amber escadera constantis and three other people huddled under a tree during a storm two weeks ago. a couple from wisconsin and a man from los angeles were killed in the strike. two nurses who happened to be nearby performed cpr on constantanis after her heart stopped. she was hospitalized with second-degree burns. >> i'm not sure why i'm the one that made it. there's no way to explain it. there's really no way. i definitely have survivor's guilt because i feel like if i were to be this lucky, like i feel everyone should be. >> she was from lafayette park near the white house that they canvassing for donations to help

dick vitale says that he is cancer free. he posted the good news on twitter yesterday and wrote that his doctor called him and said, "dick, you have gone from being in remission to being cancer free" and added "thank you to all of you that have sent me prayers." the 83-year-old battled cancer twice in the past two years. melanoma and lymphoma months apart. he missed most of the college basketball season for treatment. and a 911 call turned out to be monkey business at a wildlife conservation home in california. sheriff's deputies responded to the location last weekend after a call disconnected. once they showed up, it did not take long for the facilities director to realize who made the call. a mischievous monkey named roo. >> the monkeys are amazing. they're tool users, so smart. she's got thumbs, and she's got more than enough ability. she sees me all the time texting and playing with the phone. i think that's pretty much what she did. >> the monkey apparently found
