fired embattled school district police chief pete arredondo. school officials have been under pressure to fire arredondo over his delayed response to the mass shooting at robb elementary school three months ago. hundreds of heavily armed officers waited more than one hour to confront the shooter who killed 19 children and 2 teachers. residents at the school board meeting pleaded with officials not to only fire arredondo, but other officers as well. >> you guys dropped the ball. you messed up! >> i have messages for pete arredondo and all the law enforcement that were there that turn in your badge and step down. you don't deserve to wear one! >> people at the meeting applauded after the board voted to fire arredondo, who was not there. his attorney released a scathing 17-page letter defending the police chief's actions, saying his decisions saved the lives of other students. president biden unveiled his

long-awaited plan to forgive some student loan debt. yesterday, he followed up on a campaign promise with a plan that could help more than 40 million americans burdened with federal student debt loans. while some would see the amount of money they owe lowered, others would see it eliminated altogether. but there are questions about whether mr. biden has the authority to do this. bradley blackburn has the details. good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. this idea has been debated for years, now president biden says he is getting it done, promising up to $10,000 in debt relief for those who are eligible. as you might imagine, some are sharply questioning this plan, but this morning, plenty of parents are celebrating. kevin rice welcomed president biden's student loan debt forgiveness plan. even if it doesn't erase all the money owed for his daughter cameron's college degree. >> i was hoping that it would be more than $10,000, but, hey, i'll take what, you know, that they give us. >> all this means people can

start finally crawl out from under that mountain of debt. >> reporter: the president's announcement wednesday delivers on his campaign promise, by erasing $10,000 in federal student loan debt for those with annual incomes below $125,000, or couples earning less than $250,000. the plan would cancel an additional $10,000 for those who received pell grants. >> both of these targeted actions are for families who ned it the most. >> i racked up a lot of debt, and it would be a huge financial blessing to, like, get rid of at least -- even a little bit of that. >> my parents were able to get by working throughout college and pay for it themselves, but i can't do that on my own. >> republicans denounced the plan as an insult to those who repaid their debt. >> i think fundamentally when we borrow money, we ought to pay it back. >> some parents also expressed opposition. >> i just put two kids through college. i saved my whole life, looking for a government handout wasn't part of my family heritage and not part of what i think we should be doing in america today.

>> some question whether the president has the authority to forgive student debt, raising the prospect of legal challenges down the road. another aspect of the plan caps monthly payments for student loan debt to 5% of earnings and would forgive remaining debt after ten years. now, just how much all this could cost taxpayers is still unclear, but anne-marie, one estimate puts it at $300 billion or more. >> wow. bradley, thank you very much, bradley blackburn in new york. >> you bet. breaking overnight, a possible end to the teacher strike in columbus, ohio. the teachers union says it reached a tentative agreement with the school board early this morning after nearly 14 continuous hours of negotiations. teachers had pushed for better school conditions and smaller class sizes. if the deal is approved, in person classes will resume for students on monday. right now all classes are remote. the strike is impacting some 47,000 students. a federal judge in idaho is temporarily barring the state from enforcing a strict abortion

ban in medical emergencies. much of idaho's new law will still go into effect today. it makes it a felony to perform an abortion in any clinically diagnosable pregnancy. but last night's ruling said the state cannot prosecute anyone performing an abortin in emergencies because it appears to violate a federal law on emergency care. the pause on enforcement will continue until a lawsuit challenging the ban is decided. more than two years after the death of kobe bryant, a los angeles jury returned a verdict for the nba star's widow. danya bacchus has the details on that. >> reporter: vanessa bryant left the courthouse after the emotional moment when the jury announced its verdict. the widow of nba star kobe bryant cried quietly as the jury ordered los angeles county to pay her $16 million for emotional distress. the trial concerned photos shared by county employees of the helicopter crash that killed her husband and the couple's daughter gianna and seven

others. bryant's co-plaintiff, who lost his wife and daughter, was awarded $15 million. during the trial, bryant testified that in the midst of her grief after the 2020 crash, she learned sheriff deputies and firefighters had shared gruesome pictures of the victims. she said she felt blindsided, devastated, hurt, and betrayed. the l.a. county sheriff admitted at least eight deputies shared graphic photos, and court documents said the images appeared on at least 28 department devices. the jury agreed with bryant that the pictures violated her constitutional right to privacy. she said she has panic attacks and lives in constant fear that the images will appear online. the panel deliberated for four and a half hours before reaching its verdict. kobe bryant, one of the most popular nba stars in history, would have turned 44 this week. danya bacchus, cbs news, los angeles. a slow moving storm continues to pummel the south this morning, bringing torrential rain and flash floods.

dozens of residents at a mississippi nursing home had to be evacuated yesterday after about three feet of water poured in. firefighters led residents to safety through knee high water. elsewhere, cars were swept off roads and people had to be rescued from their homes. >> we have never seen a flood like this before. and all i can think of is what am i going to do to try to keep any further damage in my house. >> flash flood watches and warnings are in effect this morning in several states, including parts of the gulf coast. the national weather service warns more downpours are possible over the next few days. overseas now, ukraine says a russian missile strike killed 22 people at a train station. yesterday's attack in central ukraine also injured more than 20 others. it happened as the country celebrated its independence day. yesterday also marks six months since russia invaded. in a solemn ceremony, president volodymyr zelenskyy awarded medals to service members and relatives of those killed in

for harvey weinstein. those are some of the headlines on "the morning newsstand." "the associated press" reports new york's highest court will hear an appeal from harvey weinstein. the 70-year-old former movie producer was found guilty of rape and sexual assault more than two years ago. he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. the state court of appeals said the case would likely be heard next year. in june, a lower level appeals court rejected weinstein's argument that the trial judge made mistakes and upheld his conviction. "the grand rapids press" says that the mysterious illness that killed more than 30 dogs in northern michigan has been identified as parvovirus. initial tests at clinics and shelters first came back negative for parvo, but further testing at a michigan state veterinary lab revealed it was parvo. officials say the affected dogs were not fully vaccinated. they're trying to determine, though, if this is a new strain of parvo. and "the fresno bee" reports that california is expected to ban sales of new gas powered

vehicles in just 13 years. regulators are scheduled to vote on the plan today. if approved it would accelerate the transition towards electric vehicles. reaction to the proposed ban is mixed. >> transportation accounts for the largest source of emissions that hurts our lungs, you know, exacerbates and causes asthma. >> pulling too much electricity off the grid, got to worry about that with all the new electric cars, more and more cars make electricity cost more money. so that's also a factor we got to consider. >> critics argue that prices for electric vehicles are still much higher than gasoline powered cars. up next, "the amazing race." season 34 of the hit cbs reality series kicks off next month. we'll show you the former nfl coach who is racing for a million dollars. ♪♪

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. apple goes far out and one retail company wants to hire 20,000 people ahead of halloween. matt piper has those stories and more in today's "money watch report." >> stocks did better wednesday as wall street waits for a highly anticipated speech about interest rates at the end of the week. the dow gained 59 points, nasdaq up 50, s&p 500 took in 12. apple is calling this one far out. it sent out invites to the press for an event on wednesday, september 7th. it is expected that the company will debut the new iphone 14. apple will also likely announce a release date for its latest mobile operating system, ios 16. there is also ramblings it is coming out with a higher end

apple watch pro, which will feature a new design and a larger size. peloton come to amazon. the fitness company has begun selling its equipment and apparel on amazon. customers sometimes waited months during the pandemic to get one of peloton's expensive workout bikes, but the company struggled in recent months as people have returned to gyms as pandemic restrictions eased. the news prompted peloton shares to jump 20% wednesday. and you can call this a hiring party. party city says it plans to hire 20,000 people in the coming weeks for seasonal jobs. the chain says it anticipates halloween sales to be much more robust this year. the company says some 15% of the temporary hires will be offered permanent jobs at the end of the season. that is your "cbs money watch" report for this thursday morning. i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. well, a former nfl head coach will appear on the upcoming season of "the amazing race". 59-year-old rex ryan was revealed as one of the contestants for the hit cbs show. he'll partner up with one of his

golfing buddies. there are 11 other teams who are competing for $1 million. for the first time in the show's history, the competition will begin outside the u.s. in munich, germany. the show premieres on wednesday, september 21st. and how long would you wait in line for a cream-filled croissant? some people are waiting about one hour to try the supreme at a bakery in new york city. it is similar to a cronut, a hybrid of a doughnut and croissant, that first gained popularity in 2013, but this creation features a special cream that pours out of the flaky treat. one customer described what it tasted like. >> the butteriness of the croissant. i'm very surprised, i thought that the chocolate would hit first, but the croissant is something else. and do you ever get a chocolate croissant and you bite into it and you're, like, there's your little bite of chocolate, this is obviously not the case.

well, football fans are remembering len dawson, the hall of fame quarterback died yesterday. no cause was given. dawson led the kansas city chiefs to their first super bowl championship in 1970. he was also an analyst for games on nbc and a long time host of hbo's "inside the nfl." the chiefs will honor dawson's legacy tonight during their final preseason game. len dawson was 87. prince harry and his wife meghan have become parents once again, this time to a new dog. the couple adopted a 7-year-old beagle named mama mia this month. that's according to a beagle rescue group. the dog is one of the 4,000 beagles recently freed from a breeding facility in virginia. meghan is a supporter of the rescue operation. the group says mama mia joined
