repair a ruptured tendon in his right foot. it's friday, august 26th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." redacted release. the public could soon learn more about why the fbi searched mar-a-lago. what to expect once the affidavit is made public. pumping the brakes on gas-powered vehicles. california's aggressive move that will impact millions of drivers. disaster averted. a nuclear power plant in ukraine disconnected from the power grid. what caused the outage as fears grow over a possible meltdown. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we should learn more today about why the fbi searched former president trump's home in florida. a federal judge ordered the justice department to release by

noon a redacted version of the affidavit used to justify the search earlier this month at mar-a-lago. federal agents retrieved 11 sets of classified documents, including some marked top secret. bradley blackburn is in new york with the details. bradley, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. this release is something that so many have been calling for, including media organizations like cbs news. the hope is for more transparency about what led to that fbi search of a former president's home. but the reality is that much of the document we see could be blacked out. a federal judge in florida set today's noon deadline for parts of the affidavit behind the fbi's mar-a-lago search to be made public. judge bruce reinhart's order came just hours after the justice department submitted sensitive sectons of the document it wants to have blacked out. >> i think what the public is going to learn is, again, just how much effort went into this affidavit. the fact that there are pages and pages and pages of probable cause. potentially the types of
4:32 am
documents above and beyond what we already know were seized. >> reporter: the doj says the affidavit contains information that could hamper or compromise its ongoing investigation into former president trump's handling of classified documents. today's release could share at least some details about what ledthe fbi to search trump's estate on august 8th, and remove boxes containing a number of documents, including some marked top secret. >> it seems unlikely that any judge would have issued a warrant for a former president's home if it hadn't been a very strong case. >> reporter: according to legal documents already made public, federal agents are investigating potential violations of three federal laws, including one that governs gathering, transmitting or losing defense information under the espionage act. multiple news organizations including cbs news argued in court for the disclosure of the affidavit. they cited the extraordinary public interest in the federal

search of a former president's home. judge reinhart said the justice department made compelling arguments to keep large sections of the affidavit sealed. that includes parts that contain grand jury information, the identity of witnesses, and uncharged parties, and details about the investigation's strategy, anne-marie. >> bradley blackburn in new york. bradley, thank you. california took a big step towards phasing out gas powered cars. state regulators approved governor gavin newsom's plan to prohibit the sale of gas powered vehicles by 2035. people can still drive and buy used gas vehicles, but all new cars, trucks and suvs sold in california would have to be powered by electricity or hydrogen by then. the plan still needs federal approval. overseas now, as the war with ukraine drags on, russian president vladimir putin ordered a major buildup of his country's armed forces. he signed a decree to add 137,000 troops by the end of the

year. that would boost russia's overall armed forces to more than 2 million. the pentagon estimates that as many as 80,000 russian troops have been killed or wounded during the six-month war with ukraine. meantime, there are fears of a potential nuclear disaster in ukraine. after weeks of shelling, europe's largest nuclear power plant temporarily lost power yesterday for the first time ever. here's debora patta. >> reporter: it is a historic first in all the wrong ways. the first time zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been completely disconnected from the grid. it was caused by a fire in a nearby coal station that cut off the plant's last remaining supply lines. the constant electric supply is critical to cooling down spent nuclear fuel. and avoiding a disastrous meltdown says this nuclear expert. >> if the power goes off, we're then reliant on generators from fairly elderly diesel generators to run the safety systems.
4:35 am
once you lose the main power supply, you're almost in a two engine airplane which loses one engine and then you're in a bad position. >> reporter: potentisa and ukraine warns that russia may be planning to divert power to crimea. zaporizhzhia was captured by russia in march, but is still controlled by ukrainian technicians. russia and ukraine have accused each other of shelling the site, which has been turned into a deadly front line. ukrainians living in the shadow of the reactors have been running drills planning for the worst case scenario. everyone will die if there is a nuclear disaster, said olena sidoryakina, not just us in ukraine, the whole world. international atomic energy agents have been asking for access to inspect the plant, and ukraine's energy minister now says they can travel there in the coming days.
