anne-marie green. the legal team for former president trump is renewing its push for an outside party to review documents seized from mar-a-lago last month. attorneys for trump pressed for a special master in a new court filing last night. they say the justice department's argument for searching trump's florida home is deeply flawed, and they insist that trump was merely keeping his own presidential records. bradley blackburn has more. >> reporter: in a new court filing, the trump legal team once again asked that a third party special master be appointed to review documents seized from mar-a-lago. this comes a day after the justice department tried to swat down that request, arguing among other things that they had already completed a review of potentially privileged material. a federal judge in west palm beach is set to hold a hearing on the request today. in the filing, trump's lawyers call the august 8th execution of a search warrant at his estate unprecedented, unnecessary, and legally unsupported, but the doj says on june 3rd, two months before the search of mar-a-lago, trump's team told them all

sensitive documents had been returned. >> when they executed the search warrant it turned out they had not been turned over. >> reporter: trump claims he declassified documents at his home. in the filing the government stated trump's lawyers never asserted that he had declassified the documents or assertsed any claim of executive privilege. the doj says it had evidence that government records were likely concealed and removed from the storage room and that efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government's investigation. >> this pleading gives a lot of details about the obstruction investigation, not only against the target of their investigation but also as to other individuals who may have been assisting the target of their investigation. >> reporter: the filing also includes this redacted fbi photograph taken at mar-a-lago shwing documents and classified cover sheets, some marked as top secret. bradley blackburn, cbs news. a former new york city police officer and u.s. marine veteran will be sentenced today for his actions in the january

6th capitol riot. the justice department is seeking a more than 17-year sense against thomas webster. that would be the longest punishment so far stemming from the capitol attack. court in may on ges of n federal assaulting law enforcement. video showed him using a flag pole to attack a washington, d.c., officer. firefighters in california are battling several wildfires including one that erupted about 40 miles of los angeles. the root fire grew to more than 4,600 acres. video shows flames advancing up hills and surrounding a ranch. eight firefighters suffered heat-related injuries as temperatures hit 107 degrees yesterday. a mobile home park and an elementary school were evacuated. the national weather service is warning of an elevated fire risk due to high temperatures and low humidity. for yet another morning there is no clean water in the capital of mississippi. crews in jackson are working on

the city's water system that was damaged by flooding, but they cannot say when the issues will be fixed. janet shamlian has the latest. >> reporter: crews installed an emergency pump at a water treatment plant in jackson, mississippi, wednesday. one of many fixes needed to patch the water crisis. >> there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done. >> reporter: governor tate reeves says water pressure will continue to fluctuate, and he has no timeline for when the water will be clean enough to drink. >> i know it's not easy, nor is it fair that any of you have to deal with this. >> reporter: jackson has been under a boil-water notice for more than a month. recent flooding overwhelmed a treatment plant leaving the city without the pressure needed to shower or flush toilets. >> and everything you take for granted, now you can't take it for granted because you don't have it. >> reporter: jackson's population is 80% black, 25% live in poverty. the city, like many serving minorities, can't afford to fix this alone. mississippi is slated to receive $75 million for water issues from the recently passed

infrastructure bill, but it could cost $1 billion just to fix the problems in the city of jackson. residents are flocking to water giveaways, waiting in long lines for even a single case. they say the situation is unsustainable. > the city more so has to fix the issue on their end for us to feel more comfortable. it's a long line to do this. >> reporter: president biden told jackson's mayor he wants to help rebuild the city's infrastructure but did not say where the funds would come from. janet shamlian, cbs news, jackson, mississippi. serena williams' magical run at the u.s. open continues. the 23-time grand slam champion defeated number two-seed anett kontaveit in last night's second round match. williams who turns 41 this month won the first set, lost the second, and came storming back in the deciding third set. last month she said she was preparing to step away from playing to focus on having a

[ cheers ] and i have absolutely nothing to lose. >> williams and her sister venus are also entered in doubles. they play their first match tonight. united nations nuclear experts are supposed to inspect a russian-controlled nuclear power plant in ukraine today. they want to assess any damage from shelling and take steps to prevent a nuclear disaster, a possible one. russia took control of the plant in march, but it is still operated by a ukrainian staff. each side has accused the other of bombing the area. russian officials suggested the u.n. team has just a day to inspect the plant, but the u.n. and ukraine believe they should be there longer. president biden will use a primetime speech tonight to make his case that so-called maga

republicans pose an extremist threat to democracy. the white house believes some republicans pose a threat if the gop keeps control of the senate and wins the majority in the house in the midterm elections. >> the way that he sees the maga republicans are the most energized part of the republican party, that extreme -- this is an extreme threat to our democracy, to our freedom, to our rights. >> one week ago mr. biden compared maga republicans to semi-fascism. some republicans criticized him for saying that arguing that he campaigned on a pledge to unite the country. former alaska republican governor sarah palin's political comeback is over at least for now. democrat mary peltola defeated several other candidates including palin in a special election for alaska's only u.s. house seat. peltola will serve the remaining months of the late representative don young's term. he died in march. another election will be held in november for a full two-year

california's worst heat wave of the year is threatening the power grid at a new york city landmark is now gun free. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports new laws restricting carrying guns go into effect today in new york state. gun-free zones are being established including in new york city's popular times square area. the state enacted new laws setting aside sensitive areas where carrying a gun will be illegal. it was in response to a u.s. supreme court ruling striking down a state law requiring gun owners to prove they had a compelling reason to carry a weapon. >> while the landscape may be changing when it comes to legal firearm possession in new york city, our goal is always to ensure public safety. >> there has to be a regulation drawn somewhere, you know. a veteran, i believe in people having protection, but i think it has to be in a safe environment. >> a federal judge just yesterday turned down a move to put the state's new gun laws on hold.

the "los angeles times" says an extreme heat wave is pushing california's power grid to the limit. governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency yesterday to increase power production and urged residents to reduce electricity use as temperatures soared above 110 degrees in places. officials say rolling blackouts are possible. continue for at least six days and maybe longer. and "usa today" says a louisiana nun was found alive nearly five months after being kidnapped in africa. the catholic church said 83-year-old sister sue-ellen tennyson was released by her captors unharmed in burkina faso. she was abducted by her -- from her bed by armed men in the west african nation in april. the church said she's in u.s. custody and is in good health. she's been a missionary in the country since 2014. still to come, dolly parton's pet project.

crisis averted at the suez canal in egypt. an oil tanker ran aground last night blocking traffic in the global waterway. the vessel was freed by tug boats after about five hours. officials say a technical failure caused the boat to hit the bank of the canal. last year another large vessel blocked the same waterway for six days creating a massive backup. well, it may not be an nba championship, but steph curry just scored a major accomplishment. the golden state warriors star graduated yesterday for his alma mater, davidson college. he received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology. he attended the north carolina school from 2006 to 2009 beforee according to local reports, he's
