about what he called extremist threats to democracy from former president trump and maga republicans. during a primetime address at philadelphia's independence hall, mr. biden accused trump. -- accused trump and his staunchest supporters of threatening the foundation of our republic. bradley blackburn is in new york with the details. >> reporter: this was a sharp political speech and a departure for president biden who has in the past rarely mentioned former president trump by name, but last night he took him on directly and said he is fanning the flames of political violence. >> as i stand here tonight equality and democracy are under assault. >> reporter: against the backdrop of philadelphia's independence hall, president biden addressed americans to warn about what he considers a threat to the soul of the nation. >> maga forces are determined to take this country backwards. backwards to an america where there is no right to choose, no

right to privacy, no right to contraception, no right to marry who you love. they promote authoritarian >> reporter: in his primetime address, the president called out former president trump and fervent make america great again supporters while saying he wanted to be clear that mainstream republicans do not embrace extreme idealogy. >> maga republicans do not respect the constitution. they do not believe in the rule of law. they do not recognize the will of the people. they refuse to accept the results of a free election. >> reporter: president biden said efforts are under way across the country to undermine future elections at the state level. house republican leader kevin mccarthy delivered a preemptive rebuttal from scranton, pennsylvania, where mr. biden was born. >> joe biden is right -- democracy is on the ballot in november. and joe biden and the radical left in washington are dismantling americans' democracy

before our very eyes. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll found seven in ten americans believe democracy and the rule of law are under threat. about the same as in the days following the january 6th attack on the u.s. capitol. that address in philadelphia is one of three trips president biden is making to pennsylvania in about a week. a major focus on that state heading into the midterms. former president trump plans a rally there this weekend in scranton. matt? >> bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. breaking overnight, a man is in custody after an apparent attempt to assassinate the vice president of argentina. cristina fernandez de kirchner was surrounded as she exited her videowpoinng a gun inches from her head. she was not physically hurt. argentina's president said the attempt failed because the gun did not fire when the trigger was pulled. the suspect identified as a brazilian citizen was quickly detained by security.

the vice president who previously served as president is on trial for corruption charges. back in california, firefighters are still battling two wildfires amid a blistering heat wave. the root fire in a rural area north of los angeles has burned more than 5,000 acres. it's destroyed at least one house and is only 27% contained. temperatures in the area hit 112 degrees yesterday. they're expected to top 100 for the next several days. and the border 32 fire east of san diego has grown to more than 4,000 acres. it's burned at least four buildings including a house. it is only 14% contained. about 400 homes near the u.s./mexico border have had to be evacuated. one border crossing was closed because of the fire. new details about the investigation into documents seized from former president trump's home in florida. a judge ordered the unsealing of a more detailed inventory of

what was taken last month, but there's no ruling yet on whether a special master will be appointed in the case. robert costa has more. >> reporter: trump's lawyers clashed with justice department officials in court for the first time since last month's search. trump's team argued that the review of evidence should pause so an independent lawyer or special master could be appointed and see whether the documents are privileged. some legal experts say that move could further complicate the investigation. >> if that special master's given authority to look for executive privilege, very much so because, one, that master would look at every document, and two, presumably it would mean that trump wins someof these calls. >> reporter: the federal probe has already revealed the presence of hundreds of documents marked classified in trump's possession and prompted an unprecedented damage assessment by intelligence officials. the head of doj's counterintelligence division argued against the appointment of a special master. he claimed the fbi search was legally sound.

trump is no longer the president, and because he is no longer the president, he said, he did not have the right to take those documents. the former president continues to maintain that he did nothing wrong when he brought the sensitive materials to florida last year. as federal judge eileen cannon mulls whether to appoint a special master, she has ordered the unsealing of a more detailed list of property taken from mar-a-lago. >> you're going to see what trump had and that it was more than just keepsakes and mementos, it was serious national security material. >> reporter: robert costa, cbs news, washington. a former new york city police officer and u.s. marine veteran was given the longest sentence so far in the january 6th capitol riot. a federal judge sentenced thomas webster to ten years in prison for assaulting police during the riot. video showed him using a flag pole to attack a washington, d.c., officer.

federal prosecutors wanted a more than 17-year sentence. a u.n. inspection team has entered a russian-controlled nuclear power plant in ukraine to try and prevent a possible nuclear disaster. the 14-member team arrived at the plant yesterday after being temporarily delayed by shelling. both russia and ukraine have accused each other of bombing the area. the plant continues to be operated by its ukrainian staff. >> the ukrainian employees, i was with them throughout the day. of course they are in a difficult situation, but they have an incredible degree of professionalism. and i see them come and moving on. >> the inspection team says it will maintain a presence at the plant. nasa will try again tomorrow to launch its new "artemis 1" moon rocket. the initial test launch was scrubbed monday due to an engine cooling issue. nasa says it's changing its fueling procedures to deal with that problem. the rocket is supposed to send an uncrewed space capsule into

election fraud. the committee also says gingrich appeared to be ive trump's efforts to appoint fake electors. last night gingrich told cbs news the request for an interview is a publicity stunt. there is additional guidance on when you should get a new covid booster vaccine, and there is more help in jackson, mississippi, in the water crisis there. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the clarion ledger" reports mississippi's governor announced the opening of seven emergency water distribution sites. after nearly a week, tens of thousands of people are still without safe running water after flooding damaged a long-troubled water treatment plant. hundreds of national guard service members have been called in to distribute bottled water. >> to everyone in the city, i know that you're dealing with a profoundly unfair situation. it's frustrating. it's wrong. and it needs to be fixed. >> officials say there has been

still many people that have little or no water pressure. and "the new york times" says updated covid booster shots should be arriving at pharmacies and clinics within days. the cdc recommended updated boosters for most americans yesterday. the new shots made by pfizer and moderna target the original coronavirus strain and the latest omicron variants. federal health regulators say people need wait at least two months since their last vaccination to get the booster. but some cdc advisers say waiting at least three months would provide the maximum benefit. still to come, say good-bye to typos in tweets. twitter users will soon be able to edit their messages. we'll tell you when that feature will be available.

millions of americans are getting away for the labor day weekend. according to the travel site hopper, more than 12 million passengers will depart from airports here in the u.s. the busiest airports are expected to be in atlanta, denver, and los angeles. analysts say next monday will be the busiest day to return with 2.6 million travelers expected to fly back home. meantime, off-duty airline pilots launched nationwide protests yesterday. they walked the picket line at more than a dozen airports in cities including chicago, atlanta, and dallas. pilots are demanding better pay and working conditions saying staffing shortages have caused fatigue and led to cancelations and delays. an e. coli outbreak continues to grow, and twitter is almost ready to roll out a long-awaited feature. bradley blackburn has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks ticked up to start the month of september breaking several days of losses.

the dow closed up 146 points, the nasdaq was down 31, and the s&p 500 was up 12 points. an e. coli outbreak has sickened at least 97 people in six states. the cdc says many reported falling ill after eating romaine lettuce on sandwiches at wendy's. investigators are now working to confirm the source, but wendy's has temporarily removed romaine from its sandwiches in the affected regions. elizabeth holmes is a step closer to serving prison time after a federal judge declined to overturn her guilty verdict at least for now. the theranos founder will be sentenced in october for defrauding investors in her blood-testing startup. she could face up to 20 years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine plus restitution. some tweets can be tweaked. twitter is testing an edit button to allow use force change their tweets up to 30 minutes after they're posted. twitter says it's their single most requested feature and could

mitchell averaged 25 points last season and is considered one of the league's best scorers. serena and venus williams were knocked out of doubles play at the u.s. open last night. the sisters lost to players from rst round at a packed arthur ashe stadium in new york city. venus is also out of the singles tournament, but serena will play in her third round tonight. this could likely be the last time the sisters play doubles together in a tournament after serena announced last month that she is moving on to other ventures. the foo fighters are getting ready to play their first concert since drummer taylor hawkins' death in march. the band is hosting the first of two tribute concerts at london's wembley stadium tomorrow. they will be joined by others including queen's brian may and oasis' liam gallagher as well as comedian dave chappelle. paramount plus will live stream the show, and then cbs will broadcast an encore special. and a new exhibit honoring
