sound in washington state. the coast guard says the float plane was flying from friday harbor, that's a popular tourist spot in the san juan islands, to the seattle suburb of renton. one body was discovered. a search is under way for those missing, including a child. >> this is certainly a far larger and more serious incident than we expected to have on this holiday weekend. we were more expecting our usual routine, motor vehicle accidents, this was a surprise. this is what we train for. we have marine units and train for these kind of incidents. >> the cause is unknown. police in canada are searching for two suspects in connection with a stabbing spree that left at least ten people dead and 15 wounded. authorities say it took place yesterday across 13 different locations at an indigenous community and nearby province of saskatchewan. some of the victims appear to have been targeted while others were attacked at random. local leaders indicated the attacks may have been drug related.

the suspects have been identified as 31-year-old damien sanderson and 30-year-old myles sanderson. >> their location and direction of travel is unknown. this is why we need everyone in the province to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity by calling 911 immediately. >> canadian prime minister justin trudeau is calling the attacks horrific and heartbreaking. president biden will be on the road today for labor day holding speeches in wisconsin and pennsylvania. two states with pivotal senate races. but with less than two months to go before the midterm election, more americans believe there will be problems with the election process. according to a cbs news ugov poll, a majority of people say it is very live or somewhat likely that some officials will refuse to certify election results. bradley blackburn is in new york as the campaign rhetoric heats up. good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning. we are 64 days to the midterms, but you could be forgiven if you thought this was the run-up to

the 2020 presidential election. former president trump and president biden sharply targeting each other as they tried to rally voters in the key swing state of pennsylvania. a war of words between president biden and former president trump heated up over the labor day weekend. >> he's an enemy of the state. you want to know the truth. >> reporter: in his first rally since the fbi searched mar-a-lago as part of an investigation into handling of classified documents, former president trump came out swinging in wilkes-barre, pennsylvania, saturday during a campaign event for republicans running in the midterms. >> the fbi and the justice department have become vicious monsters. >> reporter: much of the former president's address was in response to a thursday night speech president biden gave at philadelphia's independence hall, insisting trump and some supporters are a danger to american democracy. >> donald trump and the maga republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our

republic. >> reporter: the president's address has been both hailed and criticized for the last several days. >> this was a speech to unify the american people, had just the opposite effect. it basically condemned all republicans who supported donald trump in the last election. that's over 70 million people. >> two of the hallmarks of a fascist political party are, one, they don't accept the results of election that's don't go their way. and two, they embrace political violence. and i think that's why president biden was right to sound the alarm. >> reporter: a new cbs news poll finds six in ten americans think both the politicization of election rules and attempts to overturn official election results are major problems with the u.s. election and voting system. and former president trump's legal fight continues over those documents recovered from mar-a-lago. we are still waiting to hear from a federal judge in florida who is deciding whether to appoint a special master in the case. matt? >> all right, bradley blackburn >> reporteou betyo

wild weather is impacting the u.s. from coast to coast. a state of emergency was declared for two counties in northwest georgia yesterday. up to 12 inches of rain fell in chattooga. one mobile home park was flooded displacing families in the area. >> about 16 years, and i never seen it like that before. i woke up, rolled out of bed, put my feet on the floor and my feet were in water. i'm like, yeah, this sucks. >> the national weather service calls the situation extremely dangerous and life threatening. meantime in northern california, two people died in the mill fire. it's burned more than 4,200 acres and is 40% contained. about 1,000 people remain under evacuation orders. as jeff nguyen reports, firefighters are also battling extreme temperatures. >> reporter: packed beaches, strained power grids, and a rush to get people and pets out of

triple-digit temperatures, big parts of the west are in the grip of a brutal heat wave. >> we us to able to at least gauge where goine. no's kinof a wild card. >> reporter: fueled by extreme heat and drought, the cedar creek fire in oregon is just one of the 85 wildfires burning in the u.s., more than 12,000 fire personnel are on the front lines. in northern california, the mill fire has expanded to more than 4,000 acres and destroyed 100 structures. >> the fire over there, fire over there. >> reporter: california is in the fifth day of record-breaking heat. power grids are stressed, and cities like glendale are preparing for rolling blackouts. that's where laundromat owner ross weston is bracing for the worst. >> we don't make money if we don't have the power. >> reporter: in death valley, one of the hottest spots on the planet, weather extremes. last month this desert was hit by historic flash flooding. none of these weather events can stop tourists from snapping

las vegas police are searching for a suspect in connection with the murder of a veteran investigative reporter. 69-year-old jeff german was found stabbed to death outside his home after authorities received a 911 call. police say the "las vegas review journal" reporter was involved in an altercation with another person that led to the stabbing. the incident is believed to be isolated. firefighters in ukraine find a feline survivor, and a suspect is under arrest in the case of a missing jogger. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the commercial appeal" reports a 38-year-old man faces charges in connection with the disappearance of a memphis teacher.ested d charged with kidnapping and tampering with evidence. investigators say the 34-year-old eliza fletcher was forced into an suv while jogging at the university of memphis on friday. police have video of the abduction and believe she

suffered serious injuries. >> we don't know what's going on. but we -- everybody's looking for her. >> she's just a beautiful person. and it's just awful to see the evil that's in the world. >> she was released from prison in 2020 after serving two decades for kidnapping a memphis lawyer. the "wall street journal" says nasa's launch of its new "artemis 1" moon rocket is being delayed again as engineers analyze a fuel leak. a second attempt to launch the space agency's most powerful rocket ever was scrubbed on saturday because of a hydrogen leak. the first attempt a week ago was also called off due to technical problems. nasa will haul off the rocket to its florida launchpad and into the hangar for repairs and system updates. that means it is grounded until later this month or next month. and "the washington post" says ukrainian firefighters rescued a kitten from a burning building after a rocket attack in kharkiv. video shows the firefighters
