the power grid to the breaking point and fueling deadly wildfires. temperatures topped 100 degrees for a seventh straight day yesterday. california managed to avoid rolling blackouts as the electrical grid hit record high demand. but with highs forecast for well over 100 again today in some places, the state's power supply will be pushed to the brink. the brutal heat is also complicating the situation for fire crews as they battle multiple wildfires across the state that have killed at least four people. astrid martinez is here in new york with the details on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. residents are trying to stay cool amid one of the worst heat waves in recent history. firefighters battling more than a dozen wildfires up and down the state. as wildfires rage up and down much of california, a record-setting heat wave has the state on high alert for power outages. the agency that oversees

california's electrical grid warned that soaring demand could prompt blackouts. >> these triple-digit temperatures throughout much of our state are leading not surprisingly to record demand on the energy grid. >> we're keeping the air on, but we're trying to keep it on more at nighttime. >> reporter: in sacramento, the capital, tuesday the thermometer hit a record 116 degrees. last year more americans died from extreme heat than from any other weather hazard. far more than floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, or extreme cold. in southern california, the fairview fire has taken at least two lives. tuesday it forced more evacuations east of los angeles. >> we're all right, a few of our other neighbors are all right. >> reporter: the mill fire just south of the oregon border now nearly 4,000 acres in size killed two women over the weekend. >> we feel for our community. it's heartbreaking for us when we hear these things. >> reporter: this happening as california is entering what is normally the worst part of its

fire season. now evidence that wildfire season has gotten more intense recently, in the last five years california has logged its largest and most destructive fires in the state history. anne-marie? >> astrid martinez in new york. thank you so much. the first day of public school classes in seattle are canceled today after teachers voted to authorize a strike. the teachers union says 95% of ballots returned by members were in favor of going on strike if an agreement with school officials can't be reached. the issues include mental health support, workload, and maintaining staffing ratios for special education and multilingual students. >> we want to be here on wednesday. we want to be ready. but we want to make sure we are coming back to school with everything we need and everything our students need. >> the start of classes in the seattle suburb of kent have been delayed almost two weeks after teachers there went on strike. and there is new information

about some of the classified materials seized from former president trump's florida estate. "the washington post" says a document describing a foreign government's nuclear capabilities was found by fbi agents last month. that's according to people familiar with the matter. the name of the country and the location of where the documents were found at mar-a-lago were not disclosed. in response, a spokesman for trump tweeted, "the washington post" continues to serve as the propaganda arm of the biden administration. they collude in never-ending leaks and lies at the expense of the integrity of the fbi and doj." a man accused of kidnapping a jogger has been charged with her murder. he will appear in court today to be arraigned on first-degree murder charges. he allegedly kidnapped 34-year-old eliza fletcher last friday while she was jogging. her body was found on monday. elise preston has the latest. today is a very sad day in

the city of memphis. >> reporter: a new gruesome court affidavit reveals tire tracks in a grassy area led investigators to the body of 34-year-old eliza fletcher. a trash bag containing purple shorts like the ones she was wearing was also found. >> while the outcome of this investigation is not what we hoped for, we are nonetheless pleased to remove this dangerous predator off the streets of memphis. >> reporter: police say early friday morning, 38-year-old cleotha abston forced the kindergarten teacher and mother of two into an suv as she was out on a run. he was arrested the following day. he was arraigned on charges of kidnapping and tampering with evidence. he had already served nearly 20 years in prison in another kidnapping case. >> we have no reason to think this was anything other than an isolated attack by a stranger. >> reporter: a growing show of love for the family is now at

the site of fletcher's abduction. her family released a statement saying, "we are heartbroken and devastated by this senseless loss." elise preston, memphis, tennessee. cbs news has confirmed that former trump adviser steve bannon is expected to surrender tomorrow to face charges in new york state. "the washington post" first reported on bannon's plan to surrender. the charges are similar to those that he faced in a federal 2020 fraud case related to a fundraising effort to build a border wall. now bannon pleaded not guilty to the federal charges and was pardoned by former president trump. presidential pardons only apply to federal cases, not state ones. bannon issued a statement saying that "they are coming after all of us, not only president trump and myself. i am never going to stop fighting. in fact, i have not yet begun to fight." they will have to kill me first. e-cigarette maker juul will pay nearly $440 million to settle a multistate

investigation into the marketing of its vaping products. juul has been blamed for sparking a national surge in teen vaping. connecticut announced the deal yesterday on behalf of 33 states and puerto rico. it includes restrictions on how juul can market its products and where it can place them in stores. >> these are some of the toughest mandates at any point on any industry which is incredibly important because at the end of the day this is about protecting our kids and protecting all of us from a very significant public health risk. >> juul still faces separate lawsuits from other states and individuals. international nuclear inspectors are warning about the conditions they found at a russian-controlled nuclear power plant in ukraine. the head of the group told the u.n. security council yesterday that understaffed ukrainian technicians operating the plant are under ta and pressure that could lead to human error.

live claritin clear. dozens of public schools in denver are cutting short classes and there may be new guidance on when you should get the covid vaccine. those are stories on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" says the u.s. plans to recommend annual covid shots starting with the new boosters rolling out now. health officials say it would be similar to getting annual flu shots targeting the latest strains.

it's a change from the current strategy of issuing new advice every few months. president biden said that for most americans it would mean one covid shot each fall. some vulnerable groups may still need more frequent vaccinations. the "denver post" says 32 public schools in the city without air conditioning are releasing students early or closing due to a record-breaking heat wave this week. in 2020, voters passed a bond measure that included more than $128 million to put cooling and air conditioning systems into two dozen schools. some were supposed to be installed in summer, but officials say supply chain issues stalled the project. >> it's definitely been impacting school. we like to especially after last year have our kids in for as much of the day as possible. losing a few hours of school time is not great. i wish we could invest more in our school infrastructure. >> officials now hope to have cooling systems installed in schools next summer. and "reuters" says new york city returned 58 stolen

americans were eagle to travel the labor day holiday weekend. the tsa says that it screened more than 8.7 million travelers between friday and monday. that's a higher passenger volume compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019. friday marked the busiest day with nearly 2.5 million people screened at airports in the u.s. it's a big day for apple fans, and the world's second tallest roller coaster is shutting down. matt pieper has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed lower on wall street tuesday, extending the market's losses into a holiday-shortened week. the dow lost 173. nasdaq down 85. s&p 500 losing 16. former theranos ceo elizabeth holmes has requested a new trial. this comes after she was convicted on four felony counts of investor fraud and conspiracy earlier this year after a nearly four-month trial. the 38-year-old says a key witness for the prosecution visited her house unannounced to

coco gauff's run at the u.s. open has come to an end. the 18-year-old american lost yesterday in the quarterfinals to 17th seed caroline garcia. garcia, who's from france, extended her winning stream to -- stream to 13 matches. she's expected to be ranked in the top ten next week. as for gauff, she's the youngest american woman to make it this far at the u.s. open since 2009. and history on the pitch. representatives for the men's and women's u.s. national teams signed their collective bargaining agreements with u.s. soccer yesterday. the ceremony ended a long fight over equal pay. the new contracts include identical pay structures for appearances and tournament victories, revenue sharing, and equitable distribution of world cup prize money. >> the same never say die attitude we had on the field, that's the same vibe we brought to this. super proud moment. really excited for everyone and really excited to see where this pushes the game. >> the contracts run through 2028.
