i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. it's thursday, september 8th, 2022. th it's thursday, september 8th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." we are following several breaking stories overnight. memphis shooting rampage. police say a teen went on a deadly hours' long shooting spree posting the violence on social media. what we know right now. nevada administrator arrested. an elected official in the las vegas area is suspected of murdering a veteran local journalist. and canada's manhunt ends. the search for the second suspect in a deadly stabbing spree comes to a close in shocking fashion. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with breaking news overnight.

police in memphis, tennessee, arrested a man who opened fire on innocent people. 19-year-old ezekiel kelly was arrested hours after starting the spree that left at least four dead and several others wounded. police say that he recorded the violence on social media. bradley blackburn is in new york with what we know. bradley, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. details are still coming in on this, but it appears that this teenager has already served time in jail and will now likely face murder charges. police say that he spread his violence at eight different crime scenes around the city while streaming his attack on line. memphis, tennessee, went on high alert yesterday. many residents sheltering in place as police desperately searched for a man driving around shooting at people during an hours' long deadly rampage. wednesday evening police said a suspect had been caught. >> i want to reassure the community that 19-year-old ezekiel kelly is in fact in

custody. we extend our sincere condolences to all the victims who have been affected in this sequence of violent acts today. >> reporter: during the pursuit, police sent out an alert saying a man driving a light blue infinity was responsible for multiple shootings in the city. >> my first reflex was to call may family and tell them, where are you? you know, go home, stay inside the house. >> reporter: according to authorities, the suspected gunman later switched vehicles to a gray toyota suv. >> i just think it is crazy that you cannot be safe in your own city. >> reporter: this memphis resident was taking an uber when she was told about the violence unfolding throughout tennessee's second largest city. >> my cousin called me and was like, there's somebody going around memphis shooting people. >> reporter: police said the alleged shooter recorded his actions on facebook. there are still more questions than answers in the aftermath of all this. we don't know yet how exactly the suspect was apprehended. and police have said nothing so far about a possible motive for

this string of violence. >> all right. bradley blackburn in new york. thank you very much. also breaking overnight, a las vegas elected official is under arrest in connection with a stabbing of a journalist. 45-year-old clark county administrator robert tellis was taken into custody at his home and is expected to face a murder charge. police say he was hospitalized with self-inflicted wounds. it came hours after investigators confiscated vehicles and executed a search warrant on his house. "las vegas review journal" reporter jeff garman was found dead outside his home. the 69-year-old had reported on alleged bullying in tellis' office and a relationship he was having with a co-worker. amid the reporting, tellis lost his bid for re-election. the second suspect in a stabbing rampage in canada that left ten people dead and 18 wounded is now dead himself. canadian authorities say myles sanderson died after being arrested by police along a

highway. it came after officers forced his car off the road and into a ditch. one official said he died of self-inflicted injuries. he was caught about 75 miles from the scene of sunday's attacks at an indigenous community in nearby town. sanderson's brother, also a suspect, was found stabbed to death in a field on monday. california fire crews are struggling to contain some major wildfires being fanned by a record heat wave and drought. you are looking at the flames from the so-called fairview fire that is just outside of los angeles which continues to grow with just 5% containment. carter evans has a look at the fires and the weather that's making them worse. >> reporter: another brutal day for california, withering heat and worsening wildfires. this one near hemet now more than 7,000 acres and growing in all directions. >> unfortunately it was clear that the fire was outpacing our ground and air resources. >> reporter: we're also learning more about the two residents who

died as flames roared into their neighborhood. >> it appears as though the two victims that were found inside the vehicle were trying to flee from the fire. we do believe that they were from the same family. >> reporter: the heat and the bone-dry brush present a constant threat. >> get some heat out -- >> reporter: especially when it ignites. lots of hot spots in this fire. this flared up a couple of minutes ago. fortunately these are private firefighters that work for an insurance company. looks like they've got it under control. otherwise, anything that isn't immediately doused and tamped down can spread and spiral out of control. in the southern california mountains, another wildfire exploded in size. >> sheriff's department -- >> reporter: prompting mandatory evacuations. >> it seemed like it wasn't going to affect us, but it's getting closer. so little concerned about that. >> reporter: all this as california's oppressive heat wave continues to shatter records. downtown sacramento on tuesday hit 116 degrees, its hottest day ever.

demand on the state's power grid also hit an all-time high prompting this emergency alert -- it may have worked. state officials reported a significant drop in energy use, but the threat of rolling blackouts remains. in hemet where at least seven buildings were destroyed, evacuees wonder what's next. you're just essentially standing out here waiting with your fingers crossed. >> yeah. 100%. as long as there's hot spots still, they're not letting us back. >> reporter: parts of california could experience extreme heat through friday. that's when relief could finally come in the form of rain from a hurricane, no less, making its way north from mexico. carter evans, cbs news, hemet, california. former trump white house strategist steve bannon is expected to surrender today to face new charges in new york state. in 2020 bannon was accused of fraud related to a fundraising effort to build a wall along the southern border. he pleaded not guilty, was pardoned by former president

trump, and the federal charges were dismissed. the new york state charges are expected to be similar. bannon calle dictment phony. meanwhile, aed reject bid tlay the ditiouns tr the leader of the oathkeers and four other members. stuart rhodes filed a motion to replace his lawyers and push back the trial related to january 6th which was scheduled to start september 27th. rhodes claimed there had been a, quote, breakdown in communication with his two attorneys. authorities say that rhodes was the ringleader of the oathkeepers' plot to violently stop the transfer of power. coming up, abortion rights battle. a michigan judge strikes down a 90-year-old state law that bans abortion. and shark attack. a snorkeling trip turns deadly for a tourist in the bahamas. this is the "cbs morning news."

you are looking at the skeleton of a woman suspected of being a vampire in poland in the 17th century. archaeologists discovered the remains last month. there's a sickle across her neck and a padlock on her foot. according to ancient beliefs the padlock was supposed to prevent a person who died and thought to be a vampire from returning from the dead. a michigan judge issued a ruling in the latest battle over abortion rights, and a murder suspect will stay behind bars at least for now. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the commercial appeal" reports a tennessee judge revoked the bond for the man accused of kidnapping and killing memphis teacher eliza fletcher. 38-year-old cleotha abston was arraigned on first-degree murder he's being held on a $500,000 bond since his arrest on charges of kidnapping and tampering with evidence. police say fletcher was abducted and forced into an suv while jogging near the university of

memphis friday. "the miami herald" says a bull shark killed a pennsylvania woman off the bahamas. 58-year-old caroline deplacido was snorkeling when she was attacked. she was rushed to shore. the family was on a snorkeling excursion after arriving on a seven-day royal caribbean cruise. the cruise line said the excursion was with a local company and not organized by royal caribbean. and the "detroit free press" says a michigan judge struck down the 1931 law criminalized most abortions. the law had remained on the books but was not enforced before the u.s. supreme court overturned roe v. wade in june. abortion providers went to court to block the measure from being enforced ahead of the supreme court ruling. the judge said that the law violates the state constitution. opponents of the ruling are likely to appeal. and still to come, a late night for "cbs mornings." gayle king and tony dokoupil

>> reporter: stocks closed much higher wednesday placing the market on pace to break a three-week losing streak. the dow gained 435. nasdaq up 246. s&p 500 taking in 71. if you're looking for a holiday job, this one could be for you. u.p.s. is looking to hire more than 100,000 people to help handle an expected increase in packages over the holidays. the openings will be for full and part-time seasonal positions primarily as package handlers, drivers, and driver helpers, but previously some 35% of people hired for seasonal package handling jobs later land permanent positions. and u.p.s. says it takes just 25 minutes for most people to get a position from filling out an online application to receiving a job offer. the world's second-largest movie chain has filed for bankruptcy. cineworld group, owner of regal cinemas has access to nearly $2 billion in financing from

the los angeles rams, are hosting the buffalo bills. both teams have super bowl aspirations. the game kicks off at 8:20 eastern tonight. and there's new technology looking to reduce the high risk of cancer in firefighters. so-called forever chemicals in fire-fighting foam is a possible contributor to those high rates. mark strassmann has the story.
