edinburgh yesterday, that's in scotland. today her body will be transported to st. giles cathedral where the public will be able to come to see their final farewell to the only monarch many have ever known. ian lee is at windsor castle outside of london with more on everything that will happen today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. king charles iii and his wife, the queen consort's, travel to the scottish capital this morning, they are going to join a procession with the coffin into st. giles cathedral as scotland says its final farewell to queen elizabeth. britain's long good-bye to queen elizabeth is now officially under way. on sunday a hearse carried the coffin from the scottish home where she died to edinburgh, scotland's capital. [ applause ] >> reporter: the six-hour journey was marked by huge crowds that lined the roads for a glimpse of the hearse. >> the mood was somber but respectful, but spontaneous applause began just as they

left. >> reporter: today the queen's body will be transported to st. giles cathedral along edinburgh's royal mile. elizabeth's son, the new king charles iii, will lead the procession which will conclude with a private service. afterwards, members of the public will be able to come pay their respects in person. queen elizabeth is expected to lie at rest in scotland for about 24 hours. her coffin will then be flown to london for an extended public viewing. >> and her majesty was a constant in our lives, and that's gone. >> reporter: the death of the uk's longest reigning monarch has prompted an outpouring of grief across theon had >> she will be sorely missed not only by her family but i think everyone that she's come into in their lives. >> reporter: anne-marie, there are reports that foreign heads of states will not be allowed to use helicopters or their official cars in central london

during the funeral. they are going to be bussed reportedly to westminster abbey for security reasons. >> all right. ian lee from windsor castle. thank you very much. there were heavy hearts across the u.s. yesterday as americans mourned the 21st anniversary of the september 11th terror attacks. jericka duncan has a look at memorial service in new york, d.c., and pennsylvania. >> reporter: under cloudy skies and light rain, thousands of mourners gathered at the memorial plaza in lower manhattan. they paid tribute to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives to terror on september 11th, 2021. >> aaron horowitz. charles j. houston. >> reporter: vice president leaders onor t 9/11 other he died trying to escape the north tower. >> i miss him a lot.

profound loss which is just as strong today as it was more than two decades ago. >> how i feel, like everybody forgot about my brother, like family and friends. and when i come here and see all these people, i get happy like this is my real family. >> that was jericka duncan reporting. and there's news this morning about those charged with the 9/11 attacks. cbs news has confirmed that u.s. military prosecutors and attorneys for five defendants being held at guantanamo bay are negotiating potential plea deals. the deals would take the death penalty off the table and keep the detention camp open for the foreseeable future. the main defendant is khalid sheikh mohammed, the self-described architect of 9/11. firefighters in northern california are making some progress against a huge wildfire threatening thousands of mountain homes. cooler temperatures and higher humidity brought some relief, but the mosquito fire east of

sacramento has grown to more than 46,000 acres. it is only 10% contained. some 11,000 people are under evacuation orders. in southern california, lower temperatures and rain helped crews battle the fairview fire southeast of los angeles. it's burned more than 28,000 acres and is 49% contained. two people died fleeing the fire and 35 homes and structures have been destroyed. the epa has launched an investigation into the water crisis in jackson, mississippi. more than 150,000 residents lost reliable access to safe running water last month after flooding damaged a water treatment plant. the city had already been under a boil water notice for about a month. yesterday on "face the nation," jackson's mayor said he has not yet talked to the epa. >> i do not know the scope nor the timeline in which they're investigating. but i can share that to the extent that they will be speaking to city employees, i will direct them to cooperate with any investigation.

>> water pressure in jackson has been restored, but people still need to boil their water to make it safe. and now to the war in ukraine. the last working reactor at a russian-controlled nuclear power plant has been shut down. power to the plant still operated by ukrainian technicians was restored yesterday, but the reactor was taken off line as a safety precaution to prevent a radiation disaster. it comes as ukraine continues to make steady advances in pushing back russian forces. debora patta has more from ukraine. >> reporter: with lightning speed advancing ukrainian forces are taking back territory in the northeast kharkiv region. the blue and yellow flag raised in towns and villages occupied for more than half a year. victory in a crucial logistic hub for russia and liberated by flowers, warm embraces, and the words these women have been waiting to hear for over six months --

queen elizabeth's much-beloved corgis have a new home. there are reports that the queen's son andrew and his ex-wife sarah ferguson will live on the estate and will take over caring for the royal dogs. apparently the queen and sarah, duchess of york, had bonded over their love of dogs. a teacher strike in seattle continues today, and there are new developments in the trump documents investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "usa today" reports lawyers for former president trump and the department of justice submitted four special master candidates to review classified documents seized at mar-a-lago.

an independent special master will be appointed to review the material taken from trump's florida estate last month to screen out potentially privileged material. the two sides proposed two names each to a federal judge after they could not agree on a candidate. "the seattle times" says classes in that city are canceled again today as negotiations between the school district and striking teachers continue. more than 6,000 teachers and staff went on strike last wednesday on what was supposed to be the first day of school. the issues include pay increases, workload, and maintaining staffing ratios for special education students. the two sides did reach agreements on some smaller issues. and the "associated press" says the death toll in a northern mexico bus crash has risen to 20. the bus headed to monterey collided with a semi-truck towing two fuel tank tractors saturday. the accident may have been caused when one of the fuel tanks came loose. both vehicles were complete
