i'm matt pieper, cbs news, new york. it's wednesday, september 14th, 2022. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking overnight, a package explodes at a university in boston leaving one staff member injured. the latest on the investigation. inflation frustration. stocks plunge after a new report shows consumer prices remain high. how much more you're paying a month for the same items as last year.ckinam. the coffin of queen elizabeth returns home to thousands of mourners outside the palace. the warning if crowds get too large. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, a staff member at northeastern university in boston was hurt when a package he opened

exploded. authorities say that the package had been delivered to holmes hall, home to various studies at the university including journalism and women's gender and sexuality programs. the 45-year-old man suffered minor hand injuries. the building was evacuated. evening classes in nearby buildings were canceled. officials say another suspicious package was found near the city's museum of fine arts and neutralized by a bomb squad. the fbi is now investigating. and president biden is brushing aside the disappointing report on inflation. last night after voting in delaware's primary election, mr. biden said the latest numb nsisted e ecomy is stmployment numbers and more jobs. consumers continue to pay more for almost everything. the consumer price index for august was up 8.3% compared to one year ago. the report sent stocks into a nose-dive with the dow and s&p

suffering their worst day in more than two years. nancy cordes has more. >> reporter: government figures confirmed what most consumers already sense, inflation isn't easing. groceries up 13.5% since last year. electricity up 15.8%. car repairs up 9.1%. rent up 6.7%. the bottom line, according to moody's, the average household is spending $460 more a month to buy the same goods and services as last year. >> just a catastrophically high inflation rate. >> reporter: that rate sent stocks tumbling. the s&p sank by more than 4% as the markets braced for more interest rate hikes from the federal reserve in a bid to coo fed is much more concerned about pric rigow than s the lar ma.

>> reporter: typically lower gas prices bring down the cost of other goods, but so far that hasn't happened even though the average price of a gallon of gas fell 26 cents in the past month. >> i will not make as much as i was hoping to. >> reporter: robin fields runs a toffee company near chicago. ingredients are her biggest expense. >> for example, butter and chocolate increased anywhere from 8% to 15%, and it doesn't look like it's going down any. it's just -- my butter just keeps going up. >> reporter: and while president biden celebrated the new inflation reduction act, many of the law's health and energy savings do not kick in until next year or beyond. >> we're making progress. we're getting other prices down, as well. we have more to do. >> reporter: a new census survey revealed that income inequality hit a new record last year. interestingly, it also found that childhood poverty was

nearly cut in half last year thanks to covid-19 stimulus payments and an expanded child tax credit. nancy cordes, cbs news, the white house. secretary of labor marty walsh is set to meet with both sides today to try and avert nationwide railway strike. as much as 40% of all u.s. freight shipments could stop by rkal the issues include sick a attendance policies the unions say penalize worker. a strike could cost the u.s. economy an estimated $2 million -- $2 billion a day. >> there's no question that it would be extremely devastating. this is sort of one of those things that is a main artery for the entire u.s. economy, and if you cut off that artery, you get a stroke and you can't afford that. >> some passenger trains including some local commuter service would be also affected. amtrak has already canceled

several of its long-distance trips ahead of a possible strike. a horse-drawn carriage will carry the coffin of queen elizabeth ii to westminster hall today where she will lie in state for four days. thousands of people lined the street last night as the queen's body was transported back to buckingham palace. her son, king charles iii, and other members of the royal family were inside. ian lee is at westminster with a look at what to expect today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. hundreds of people are already lining the route the queen's coffin will take from buckingham palace to westminster hall just behind the abbey here. this is going to be the largest procession yet with king charles leading the royal family. queen elizabeth ii's journey back to england is now complete. a hearse carrying her coffin arrived at buckingham palace last night. for most of her life it was the monarch's primary residence. huge crowds lined the streets to watch the procession to the

palace. >> it's history. it's -- it's emotional. it's just what i felt we should do really. >> reporter: queen elizabeth's children and grandchildren received the body in a private event at the palace. the royal family's mourning will be much more visible today. king charles along with his sons and siblings will walk behind the coffin as it's moved from buckingham palace to westminster hall. the queen will lie in state there until her funeral next week. officials here at westminster are expecting huge numbers of mourners to turn out to pay their respects to queen elizabeth. people are being warned wait times could reach up to 30 hours. the line to see the queen at westminstecebey. >> i'm happy to be here. it doesn't bother me. i want to be able to experience and to say thank you once again for the queen. >> reporter: the public viewing will be open around the clock until monday morning. media outlets in the uk are reporting if the crowds get too

big and the line too long the government may start turning people away. anne-marie, up to a million people are expected to turn out to see the queen when she lies in state. and officials are telling people that they shouldn't bring a chair, don't bring a tent. they want to keep this line moving to get as many people as possible to pay their respects. >> that's going to be tough. going to be a long wait for many people. ian lee at westminster, thank you. and you can watch the ceremonial procession of queen elizabeth's coffin from buckingham palace to westminster hall right here on cbs starting at 9:00 a.m. eastern. classes are set to resume in seattle today after the teachers union voted to suspend their five-day strike. the school district and the union announced a new tentative contract agreement monday night. union members still have to vote on whether to ratify the three-year deal. more than 6,000 teachers and staff went on strike a week ago on what was supposed to be the first day of school.

and now to the war in ukraine where ukrainian forces continue to make advances against a retreating russian military. president volodymyr zelenskyy said around 3,000 square miles of territory previously controlled by russia in kharkiv have been liberated. it includes dozens of towns and nearly all the territories seized by russia in kharkiv since the start of the war. >> i would let president zelenskyy determine and decide whether he feels militarily they've reached a turning point. but clearly, at least in the donbas, there's movement by the ukrainian armed forces. >> the white house could announce a new military package in the coming days. the nba suspended the owner of the phoenix suns and phoenix mercury for one year and fined him $10 million. the league said an independent investigation found that robert sarver had a history of racist, misogynistic, and hostile behavior.

houston hospital. starr's investigation into whitewater in the 1990s uncovered clinton's affair with monica lewinsky. in 2020, he helped president trump in his first impeachment trial. ken starr was 76. the boston marathon is making some changes, and mudslides roll through california. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports mudslides in southern california damaged homes and carried away cars. heavy rains from the remnants of a tropical storm unleashed fast-moving rivers of mud in small mountain communities east of los angeles. were washed away, damaging homes and businesses. one person is missing. at least 25 people had to be rescued from their vehicles. >> it wasn't like the cars were driving thinking, hey, i got this, it was oh, my god, here comes the mud. >> part of living in the mountain. if you want to live in paradise, there's always some kind of consequence. >> thousands of residents are under evacuation orders. more mudslides are possible

for twitter who was fired earlier this year testified on capitol hill saying the social media platform had at least one suspected foreign agent on its payroll. peter zadko claimed the cybersecurity system is in shambles. he said the company can't shield users' data from a rogue employee. he was asked about the fbi informing the company that one suspected chinese agent was working for twitter. >> i'm reminded of one conversation with an executive when i said i am confident that we have a foreign agent, and their response was, "well, since we already have one, what does it matter if we have more?" >> twitter responded saying they are riddled with insistencies and inaccuracies. the testimony came on the same day that twitter shareholders voted in favor of elon musk's takeover bid of the company. matt pieper has that story and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: shareholders have been voting on the issue for

weeks. although the vote was largely a formality given the court case between elon musk and twitter. musk has been sending letters to the social media company looking to terminate their deal. the trial is set to begin october 17th. a grande change at starbucks. the company says it will spend $450 million next year to make its stores in north america more efficient, and it hopes to boost employee morale. it's debuted a new work station that requires less movement and can cut 50 seconds off the process of making a blended iced mocha. starbucks' coo says customizable cold drinks are challenging employees in kitchens designed for simpler hot drinks. and paris goes dark sooner. at least at the eiffel tower. it's usually lit until 1:00 a.m., but now the mayor says the lights and the sparkling display on the hour will switch offer before midnight after the last visitors leave. all an effort to conserve energy as they face the risk of power shortages this winter amid

king charles had another pen mishap. at a signing ceremony in northern ireland yesterday, charles struggled with a leaky pen. before he realized it was leaking, he had handed it over to queen consort camilla. it was quick replaced. charles is heard saying, "i can't bear this bloody thing. every stinking time." the second time he made headlines over pen problems on. saturday he appeared frustrated with pens crowding a desk. gisele bundchen is breaking her silence for the first time about husband tom brady's decisions to unretire from football. the supermodel told "elle" "obviously i have concerns, this is a very violent sport, and i have my children and would like him to be more present. ultimately i feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for them. he needs to follow his joy, too."
