we begin with what could soon become a major hurricane that appears to be headed for a direct hit on florida. tropical storm ian is moving through the caribbean this morning where hurricane warnings are in effect for grand cayman and parts of cuba. it is barreling toward the gulf of mexico, and then likely florida's west coast. president biden and governor ron desantis have declared a state of emergency ahead of time as people in florida prepare for the worst. building sandbags, waiting in long lines for gas, buying water and emptying grocery store shelves. astrid martinez is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and tropical storm ian's path is still uncertain, but it is threatening to arrive in florida as a hurricane bringing with it devastating winds, rain, and storm surge, and residents there are being told to prepare now. tropical storm ian is gaining strength as it creeps north through the caribbean. the storm is expected to develop

into a hurricane today, and forecasters believe it's likely to intensify by tuesday, possibly into a category four meaning winds over 130 miles per hour. >> i'm always nervous when they -- nervous when they say hurricane, storm, you know. but listen, i live in florida. >> reporter: a state of emergency is now in effect throughout florida. most forecasting models show ian on a course tracking along the gulf coast toward the panhandle later this week. >> we could see a situation where we have cat-four storm surge and potentially a cat one or two hurricane landfall. >> reporter: officials said widespread flooding may occur even if the center remains offshore. >> don't think that if you're not in the eye that somehow you don't have to make preparations. >> reporter: residents of the sunshine state appear to be heeding those warnings. many spent the weekend filling sandbags and stocking up on emergency supplies. >> shop early, get your

flashlights, your about the reece, get your -- if you want a generator, there's a limited amount. >> reporter: forecasters still aren't sure when the storm is expected to make landfall as the path remains unclear. they are hopeful it will weaken before reaching u.s. shores. and since the president has declared an emergency, that authorizes the department of homeland security and the federal emergency management agency to coordinate disaster relief. anne-marie? >> astrid martinez in new york. thank you. well, hundreds of thousands of people in eastern canada remain without power after the remnants of hurricane fiona came ashore. days after tearing through the caribbean, fiona slammed into canada's east coast saturday as a post tropical cyclone. it washed away homes, tore off roofs, and toppled trees in areas including in nova scotia and prince edward island. one person was killed. utility companies say it could be days before power is restored to everyone. and the house committee

investigating the attack on the capitol is scheduled to hold its next public hearing on wednesday. yesterday on "60 minutes," denver riggleman, a former senior technical adviser for the committee, said the white house switchboard connected a call to a rioter's phone on the day. -- day of the attack. denver riggleman, the former republican representative from virginia, an ex-military intelligence officer, analyzed phone records, text messages, emails, and other material related to the attack. >> i know one of the call. i don't know the white house end which i believe is more important. but the thing is the american people need to know that there are link connections that need to be explored more. >> riggleman's book about his work for the committee called "the breach," is out tomorrow. in a statement to "60 minutes," the committee said in part, "mr. riggleman had limited knowledge of the committee's investigation. he departed the staff in april prior to hearings and our most important investigative work."

ahead on "cbs mornings," we're going to be talking with riggleman about his interview and his time serving as a technical adviser for the january 6th committee. voting continues today in four russian-controlled areas of ukraine on referendums to become part of russia. the u.s. and other western nations have called in a sham election, meant to pave the way for russia to annex parts of ukraine. it comes as at least 2,000 people have been detained in russia for protesting a draft. last week president vladimir putin ordered the partial mobilization of reserve troops to fight in ukraine. there are unconfirmed russian media reports that say moscow may soon close russian borders to men of fighting age as people try to flee the country. yesterday in an exclusive interview with cbs' "face the nation," volodymyr zelenskyy said russia's move to mobilize recruits shows the army is not able to fight after being pushed back by ukrainian forces. debora patta with more. >> reporter: staged polls,

carter made a surprise appearance, and iran's president is promising action against protesters. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "reuters" reports the president of iran says the country will act decisively after the biggest protest in years. state media says at least 41 people have been killed in demonstrations that broke out across iran last week. the protests began after a 22-year-old woman died while in the custody of iran's morality police. she had been detained for allegedly not wearing her islamic head scarf properly. there have also been state-organized pro-government rallies in several cities to counter the anti-government protests. the "the washington times" reports a small nasa spacecraft is supposed to slam into an asteroid tonight to see if it can alter its case. the d.a.r.t. spacecraft will be flying 14,000 miles per hour when it's scheduled to crash into an asteroid about seven million miles from earth. it blasted off from california last november.
