how our state is making it hardr it harder for thieves to cash in on the catalytics. > >> new efforts underway to clear out a homeless encampment. how soon cal trans wants the job d. > >> and we are one hour away from what sounds a lot like a movie plot. why nasa is up there in space, trying to crash an asteroid. good afternoon everybody, happy monday to yous you. let's begin with the crackdown on catalytic converter thefts. the governor gavin newsom does and so do the thieves. signing two new bills to try to stop them in their tracks. converters reduce harmful emissions and improve vehicle efficiency, right? but get this, last year more than 18,000 of them were reported stolen in our state alone. that was triple the year before, moe before, more than 14 times the number of thefts in 2019. it takes just seconds for a thief to jump onto your car and swipe that little unit. but often it takes weeks, thousands of dollars for you, the consumer, to replace one.

sculptures. shannon mccauley caught up with the artist at hunter's point. >> reporter: this is anderson, l a metal sculptor in san francis. but her journey wasn't forgotte. >> i was more of a mold maker ad a painter. and then my had late husband, i met him. he was an art car artist. he would make these amazing animals, turn cas into anything. and so he taughte taught me to weld. >> reporter: when dean and her , her husband, fellow artist relocated, they found a makers space in hunt hadder's point. e hadder's point. since tom's passing in 2009, she has contid she has continued to come to the box shop to work on her sculptures. here is what she's working on right now. the box p box shop has been open for 19 years. it has been a creative e creative home for thousands of artists in the bay area.
